Cell outage across the US: AT&T is 'working urgently to restore service' as more than 70,000 customers are hit by nationwide communications blackout - but mobile providers are refusing to reveal cause
Customer reports about the outage spiked around 4am Eastern time on Thursday
The largest number of issues was reported by AT&T users, which peaked at 51,000 customers just after 7am before jumping to over 70,000 an hour later
So far, the companies have not provided an explanation for the widespread outages
It'll be interesting to see where this goes. Remember, 2024 is going to be like nothing we've ever seen.

    Good timing.

    ...
The California Public Utilities Commission is considering an application by AT&T to waive its responsibilities to be what’s called “Carrier of Last Resort,” meaning the utility has to offer the copper-wire landline service.

The utility said in filings with the commission that the technology for the traditional landlines is old and demand is low. The utility and many of its peers have been petitioning state utility commissions and state legislators, asking to be relieved of the task of maintaining and offering the traditional landline service.

I'm an AT&T customer and mine was out for at least a few minutes here in Georgia. (It may have been out longer, but I wouldn't have noticed it was down as no one ever calls me, but the outgoing call I attempted to make didn't go through).

lol - Finally at the bottom of the article, the author says Mike Rothschild thinks there's a profit motive in it for conservative media. But he never answers the question of the headline... How did it come to be that there's a profit to be made there???

Maybe it's because people know their government is lying to them. And on more and more occasions?

Let's start with a simple one... Do you think that Biden has no loss of mental faculties? Because if you do, you're ignoring the evidence of your own eyes. If you don't, then you believe the conspiracy theory that the White House, government agency heads, and the corporate press are lying to you. In other words, you believe there's a psychological operation underway to mislead the America public. So now, we're no longer talking about if psyops are real, we're talking about which ones YOU choose to believe.

In this case, I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for multiple carriers to be struck with outages... But what is also clear is that if this were a test run for something more nefarious, your government would NEVER tell you. Which is why we question such things.

United States mobile operators carry out first cross-carrier API tests focused on drone public safety connectivity, as part of GSMA Open Gateway initiative.

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon each conduct tests of the first North American cross-carrier, interoperable API

Demonstration is part of GSMA Open Gateway initiative to advance 5G capabilities around the world by fostering network API adoption and development

BELLEVUE, Wash., DALLAS and NEW YORK, Feb. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The United States’ three largest mobile operators – AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon – today announced they have each completed independent tests of the first cross-carrier, interoperable Application Programming Interface (API) in North America, as part of a GSMA initiative to unlock the full potential of 5G connectivity.

Through the GSMA Open Gateway program, which is focused on helping businesses bring new 5G services and use cases to market faster, the three operators worked in partnership with developers at American drone maker Inspired Flight Technologies (IFT).

Verizon also leveraged its membership with technology foundation MITRE Engenuity to test a device status API. Once the API is commercially deployed, it will enable connected devices, such as drones, to maintain connectivity mid-flight and allow the drones to be re-contacted if any technical issues are encountered.

“The ability to access this type of network information via an API will allow us to better support drone flight and management, to pinpoint where to send relief immediately after weather events and/or to fly over communications, and other assets to expedite recovery efforts,” said Adam Bilmes, Senior Director of Business Development at Inspired Flight Technologies.

AT&T blames coding error for hourslong network outage
AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.

WASHINGTON — AT&T said Thursday that all of its customers impacted by a nationwide service outage have cell service again, after an hourslong outage that appeared to be the result of a technical error, not a malicious attack.

An AT&T spokesperson said all service had been restored in an update shortly before 3:30 p.m. Eastern, nearly 12 hours after customers began reporting issues.

“We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers," AT&T said. "We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future.”

AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.

“Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack,” the Dallas-based company said.

Downdetector, which tracks online outage reports submitted by users, showed more than 74,000 AT&T customers reported issues at the peak of the outage. By noon Eastern, that number had declined to about 60,000 reported outages.

The outages began around 3:30 a.m. ET. The carrier has more than 240 million subscribers, the country's largest.

So far, no reason has been given for the outages. But Lee McKnight, an associate professor in the iSchool at Syracuse University, believes the most likely cause of the outage is a cloud misconfiguration, or human error.

"A possible but far less likely outcome is an intentional malicious hack of ATT’s network, but the diffuse pattern of outages across the country suggests something more fundamental,” McKnight said in an emailed statement.

While the outage tracking website also showed 4,000 outage reports for Verizon and more than 1,900 from T-Mobile, both companies said in their statements they didn't experience outages.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally. Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation,” Verizon said.

“Our network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks,” T-Mobile said.

Cricket Wireless, which is owned by AT&T, had more than 9,000 outages, Downdetector said Thursday.

During the outage, customers still had access to "SOS mode," which allows cell phone users without access to regular service to call 911 in an emergency, piggybacking off of other networks nearby to do so.

The outage became a major trend on social media overnight, with users on X (formerly Twitter) flocking to a number of hashtags to discuss the issue. Although #CyberAttack was one of the trending hashtags associated with the outage, there is no indication that an attack was the cause of the outage.
