I've always thought of it in limits of law and legitimacy too. Tyranny of the individual or several individuals is preferable to tyranny of an entire Collective group. The least amount of control over another's life the better off people are to escape tyranny.

Would you mind explaining to me what you mean by "reset power" and "doing relays on the pins"? I am going to speak with the guy and would like to be able to talk about this, but first I need to understand it better. Thanks.

I'm not claiming superiority. I'm pointing out that as a whole, this society has a lower tolerance threshold to having sex with children.

People naturally try to cover things up. But still the overall tolerance of most people in our society is very low to this type behavior. There's a code among criminals in the penal system in America that people who abuse children are the worst. It's the irony of some criminals that they can do all sorts of bad things, but most won't tolerate someone who molests children.

No there wasn't anything more wrong than I realized. I took out every single visible screw from the case and it still wouldn't open. Apparently there's a trick to it that I don't know. I normally do all my own computer maintenance but this is the first laptop I've ever had and I don't know all the ins and outs yet. I did manage to replace the hard drive without help, so I'm not quite as stupid as you probably think I am. Fuck you, by the way!

There was nothing wrong with the computer aside from needing new thermal paste and a cleaned fan. Whatever may be wrong now isn't the computer's fault, it was caused by the repair guy, and I'm gonna make him fix it. Then it will be running perfectly -- probably for another 5-6 years. Maybe by then I will be able to afford something else.

I like this laptop and can't afford a new anything. This laptop has the best built-in speakers -- better than the external speakers I had with a desktop PC. Being a very aurally-oriented person, sound quality means a lot to me. It's not easy to find laptops with speakers this good.

Damn, I figured something was wrong because I'd been waiting on him or Carla to send me his godaddy username/pw so I could update the nameservers for shemkellogg.com which I moved on May 26th to a new server. This was before he left for Mexico. He told me a few days ago that he would send the info on Saturday (this last weekend) when he got home from the hospital, then I didn't hear from him. Now I know why. The domain is still good for a while and I'd be glad to keep the site going, perhaps with a different focus, but as of now it's not showing up, it's still pointed to the old server and I don't know how to change that.

Matter of fact, he kept the gunk that was clogging the fan wrapped in a paper towel and showed it to me when I picked up the machine. I picked up the wad of dust and cat hair and out dropped a little screw sort of thing -- not an actual screw but something with a similar size and shape. I showed him that and he said he had misplaced it from another computer. After posting the above message I turned the computer off, then unplugged it, turned it over, removed the battery, waited a few minutes, plugged the battery back in and started the laptop again. Now the speakers are working again. I think I better take it to someone else who might be less sloppy with it and find out what the hell is going on.

While I recognize you asked for expert opinions, I won't let that stop me from offering one (hey you know what they say about opinions!) I have a Leopold Mark IV, a Nikon Monarch, Trijicon gear....but for a purely wonderful piece of glass (there must be a way to mount one to a picatinny rail), consider looking at Swarovski. My first experience with Swarovski glass was using a pair of Swarovski binoculars, which, and I know it can be hard to believe, are absurdly more clear and detailed than any binoculars I'd ever used before. And they bring in more light somehow, so at dusk, you can see for an extra 10-20 minutes when you'd set down any other set of binoculars. After that, I tried a Swarovski scope, and it's the same deal. They're just so clear it's hard to explain. Now in terms of night-optics, having played a bit with those, the problem I have (and people here with more experience are probably better to chime in) is unless you're ready to plunk down SERIOUS (think $5k+ coinage) for truly professional grade gear, the more budget stuff (and even now we're still talking $1k-$3k) is hit or miss depending on conditions. Electronic night-gear and shooting out to the distance you want, at night....i'm not even sure where one would start that would be highly effective. Man I'd love to plink with an LMT sometime. Congrats on the purchase!

I was out for a couple of hours and the computer was sleeping. When I got back and started using it again, the time was moved ahead by almost three hours, and the audio no longer works. When I hover the mouse pointer over the volume control icon - which has a red X on it - in the system tray, a message pops up saying "No speakers or headphones are plugged in". Again, I did not change any settings. This audio problem never happened before either.

No I didn't check that (I will). Thanks for the tip. You say "Removing the battery before it shuts down" but what I did was shut it down using the power button (held in for 4 seconds) then unplug the power cord then take out the battery. Same thing?

I checked all the power settings right after the first indication of trouble. Nothing was different than it had been before the laptop went to the shop.

He didn't replace the motherboard battery or change any settings. Neither did I. And this particular computer has always shut down when the power source was removed.

Your reply doesn't seem to me to have any connection to my question -- unless my question is evidence of a huge misunderstanding on my part. I had assumed, based on 18+ years of experience with computers in general, that when you SHUT DOWN a computer WITHOUT first using the built-in Shut Down process, whether from the power button or by cutting off its power supply (unplugging and removing battery, in this case), then it ought not to "Resume Windows" as if it had only been hibernating. Am I wrong there? If so, please explain HOW. Thanks.

At this point I no longer much care what happens except for one thing: I feel like I entered the Twilight Zone the other day when I removed the battery and the power cord from the laptop and later it didn't say "Windows didn't shut down properly" and instead gave me "Resuming Windows" as if the machine had been in hibernation mode. If I could understand how that was possible, then my mind can have a rest!
