RON PAUL REPUBLICAN ENTERS WEST VIRGINIA U.S. SENATE RACE - WILL CHALLENGE REP. CAPITO
The nation's top opportunity for a 2014 GOP pickup is West Virginia where liberal Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D) is retiring. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R) has large lead in the polls, and so far there is no Democratic candidate.
Capito has a 100% rating from the Chamber of Commerce and Gun Owners of America, Keep America Safe 96%, Concerned Women for America 92%; Christian Coalition 90%; American Conservative Union 70%, while the ACLU and the Sierra Club give her a zero. Those scores are not good enough for the Club for Growth or the Senate Conservatives Fund.
Former one-term State Delegate Pat McGeehan (photo) mentioned both groups in announcing his Senate candidacy today. He received immediate praise from Ron Paul's Campaign for Liberty, West Virginians for Ron Paul and the Ron Paul Forums.
McGeehan is a former Air Force officer who was elected to the state House in 2008, but lost bids for the State Senate in 2010 and 2012.
McGeehan is highly critical of the Republican Party and has been described as the state's Ron Paul. In more than a quarter of all votes cast during his two years in the legislature, he was the only Delegate out of 100 to cast a “No” vote.
He is the author of a book on libertarian economics which was praised by Dr. Paul. McGeehan says "Every politician I have been forced to deal with is in it for themselves. Then there's Ron Paul."
The Campaign for Liberty says McGeehan does not "look upon issues as Republican or Democrat, right or left. . .
"His philosophy does not break down in his mind as Republican or Democrat, but by what he calls 'Statism versus Liberty.'"
McGeehan describes U.S. foreign policy as "interventionism." He says "this money-printing scheme has brought the increased tendency for our country to go to war overseas. If the government had to pay for foreign wars by raising taxes or by selling bonds, politicians would have to at least justify why the country is going to war. If people do not directly see they are funding war, they are less worried about justification for it. . .
"Before they (politicians) send our troops away into unwinnable wars, they would have to at least make it clear why the war is necessary in the first place. If the government can fund offensive war by legally counterfeiting to pay for it, no one notices the cost of these wars at first. There is far less resistance to the initiation of war when the government can publicly finance the conflict by printing the money up."
McGeehan's favorite book is Paul's "End The Fed" and his top five authors include radical libertarian Murray Rothbard
