Hopefully, the dad can provide insight as to how much the shooter practiced; the dad apparently had a dozen or so guns.
I enjoyed a Project Appleseed weekend a few years ago, where we learned techniques for distance shooting. They recommend a 10/22 with nice iron sights, and the targets are at 25m, with appropriate squares representing 100, 200, and 300 yard shots, and "Morgan's Shingle," a "250 yard" shot.
I did ok after just a few hours on little paper targets, with a nice 5-second cadence. I didn't have the stress of being surrounded by trained snipers, having an LEO see me, then having to rapidly reset, and squeeze off some rounds for a head shot. Using iron sights.
It'd be informative to understand how often he trained/practiced.
