5 U.S. troops killed in southern Afghanistan

Last Updated Jun 10, 2014 12:30 AM EDT

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Five U.S. service members and one Afghan were killed in fighting in southern Afghanistan on Monday in what could have been a mistaken bombing by their own comrades.
A statement from the international alliance said all five soldiers died on Monday after they and their Afghan counterparts came under attack and requested air support.
A U.S. military official confirmed to CBS News that all five slain troops were American, and that they might have been killed by allied forces.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said a battle took place on Monday night between foreign troops and Taliban fighters in Arghandab district in southern Zabul province.
The Afghan police chief in southern Zabul province said there was a joint operation by Afghan and U.S. troops in the province earlier Monday. After that operation was over, the troops came under an attack by the Taliban in Arghandab district and called in air support, said Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rooghlawanay.

I just heard on the radio that it was a B-1 bomber that dropped the ordnance -- a B-1 sounds like overkill for a close-air support mission.

Yes, it was B-1, not exactly "smart bomb" vehicle.

There weren't any members of Seal Team Six operating in that locale, were there? Or have all those Seals been clubbed to death?

They specifically requested the B-1 or they requested air support and there was a B-1 in the area that was dispatched? I thought they usually used the AC platform for close air support?

Once again proving you should be more worried about the 'murikan government than terrorists.

Insert thread about retiring A-10s here.

Nothing works as well as a FAC that can talk the CAS pilot on to the target for visual ID.

ETA - since the Talibs have Stingers, probably unsafe for any aircraft to do low level CAS.

Out of every one hundred men they send us, ten should not even be here. Eighty will do nothing but serve as targets for the enemy. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, upon them depends our success in battle. But one, ah the one, he is a real warrior, and he will bring the others back from battle alive.

That is the only way this can be avoided . Without someone in control then you are just like every third world military that just sprays and prays.

Yep. The only positive that can come of this horrible tragedy is that maybe, maybe 5 families will begin to wonder "why?" and begin asking other important questions.

What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?

That or they double down and seek justice for their fallen family member by being even more ardent supporter of the war. It could go both ways.

I really don't care too much about their mission but I really hope the war ends and they can all come home and continue their normal lives the way it was before it was interrupted by war
