What if Stock Purchases were Taxed?

There is good and bad that will result from placing a Sales Tax on the purchases of Stocks. Not Bonds, just Stocks.

It also depends WHEN such a tax is introduced. If introduced when Wall St controls the entire economy, the tax would likely have devestating effects on the economy. However, had such a tax been introduced before the existence of Wall St., would such a tax prevented either the economic abuse by Wall St of Main St, or would it have prevented any form of economy from getting off the ground?

The FAILURE of the United States Government to operate and maintain an
Honest Money System , which frees the ordinary man from the clutches of the money manipulators, is the single largest contributing factor to the World's current Economic Crisis.

That would really crush my day trading game.
I too have been a close observer of the doings of the Bank of the United States...When you won, you divided the profits amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the bank...You are a den of vipers and thieves. I have determined to rout you out, and by the Eternal, I will rout you out!

No. There is only bad that results when additional taxation is introduced. Don't be a leftist.

This. The Fed and other organs and branches of government are responsible for the business cycle and other "economic abuses" as you described it. More government in the form of taxation or regulations will not improve only deteriorate the situation further. A booming and growing financial system including the stock market is good but it has to be based on solid fundamentals not fed induced credit bubbles. (which is the real problem not the lack of another tax, we should get rid of the capital gains not extend more taxes to the financial sector) Taxing stock purchases will just limit and lower the amount of trading and thus the ability for firms to raise needed capital.

Oh goody, someone saying it wouldn't be so bad to extend legalized extortion (taxation) to another market, in yet another way. Some of our allies around here really need to think more seriously about taking their ideas to their logical conclusions...or start considering whether or not they REALLY are allies of liberty.

The idea a tax can be ethical is so illogical. This OP was advocacy for evil; an ends justifies the means argument. I'm with him on the ills of Wall Street, but the root causes of those ills are government intervention (like tax, regulation, etc.), not a lack of extortion.

There is no good to extorting Wall Street...it's just treating a symptom while ignoring the disease causing the symptom. It's like saying it's good to give a cancer patient only painkillers while ignoring the tumor that's causing the pain to begin with.
