https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/02/world/german-warship-south-china-sea-intl-hnk/index.html German warship heads for South China Sea for first time in nearly two decades amid tension with Beijing BerlinGermany on Monday sent a warship to the South China Sea for the first time in almost two decades, joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over China's territorial ambitions. China claims swathes of the South China Sea and has established military outposts on artificial islands in the waters that contain gas fields and rich fishing. The US Navy, in a show of force against the Chinese territorial claims, regularly conducts so-called "freedom of navigation" operations in which their vessels pass close by some of the contested islands. China in turn objects to the US missions, saying they do not help promote peace or stability. Washington has put countering China at the heart of its national security policy and seeks to rally partners against what it says are Beijing's increasingly coercive economic and foreign policies.

LOL so, if your a rural black or Latino Or an urban white evangelical you should be fine. https://www.yahoo.com/news/unvaccinated-america-theres-no-one-135607528.html In one group are those who say they are adamant in their refusal of the coronavirus vaccines; they include a mix of people but tend to be disproportionately white, rural, evangelical Christian and politically conservative, surveys show. In the other are those who say they are open to getting a shot but have been putting it off or want to wait and see before making a decision; they are a broad range of people but tend to be a more diverse and urban group, including many younger people, Black and Latino Americans, and Democrats.

Only if you decide to sell/ship to pork to California. That's the way I read it. Since only 4% of the industry is in compliance with CA law I guess they simply sell to other markets or build a better pig pen. I suspect they will sell more to other markets. Which may bring prices down in those locations.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/desalination-advances-california-despite-opponents-100448697.html HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (Reuters) - Environmentalists say desalination decimates ocean life, costs too much money and energy, and soon will be made obsolete by water recycling. But as Western states face an epic drought, regulators appear ready to approve a desalination plant in Huntington Beach, California. After spending 22 years and $100 million navigating a thicket of state regulations and environmentalists' challenges, Poseidon Water is down to one major regulatory hurdle - the California Coastal Commission. The company feels confident enough to talk of breaking ground by the end of next year on the $1.4 billion plant that would produce some 50 million gallons of drinking water daily. "The Pacific Ocean is the largest reservoir in the world," said Poseidon vice president Scott Maloni. "It's always full." California's Coastal Commission is expected to vote on Poseidon's permit application before year's end. Other agencies also still need to sign off. But a key authority, a regional water board, approved a permit for the project in April on condition that the company increase its commitment to rehabilitate the nearby 1,449-acre (586-hectare) Bolsa Chica wetlands reserve, an important bird habitat, and build an artificial reef.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/bacon-may-disappear-california-pig-141827828.html At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

I suppose this is another reason Schumer (and the DEMS) want to kill the filibuster. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-democrats-appalling-vote-to-kill-the-hyde-amendment/ar-AAMMARc?ocid=msedgntp From 1976 to 2020, regardless of partisan control of Congress, every appropriations bill funding Medicaid included the Hyde amendment, which prohibits federal funding of abortions for enrollees except in rare circumstances. From 1973 to 2020, the Helms amendment — a similar prohibition on direct taxpayer funding of abortions in international-aid programs — was attached to every appropriations bill funding the State Department. But this week, not a single House Democrat voted against either appropriations bill on the grounds that the legislation would force American taxpayers to fund the deliberate destruction of innocent human lives at home and abroad. The House Democrats’ unanimous support for taxpayer funding of abortion is atrocious. As common sense and multiple studies tell us, government subsidies for abortion result in more abortions. A report published in 2020 by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, a nonprofit affiliated with the Susan B. Anthony List, estimated that the Hyde amendment had spared the lives of more than 2,400,000 human beings since 1976. Studies by the Guttmacher Institute, a Planned Parenthood offshoot, have also found that Medicaid funding of abortion causes Medicaid recipients to procure abortions at a much higher rate.

I think we can expect the proxy war with China to ramp up over the years. Also development of the One Road/Belt initiative. Then, there is Kashmir. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/china-moves-quickly-to-replace-america-in-afghanistan/ar-AAMKsjU?ocid=msedgntp As the United States withdraws its forces from Afghanistan, China is not hesitating to move in. Earlier this week, nine Taliban leaders accepted Beijing's invitation and met in Tianjin with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. One of those leaders was the group's co-founder, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Wang told his visitors that China expects the Taliban to play an important role in the "process of peaceful reconciliation and reconstruction in Afghanistan" and described the group as a "pivotal political and military force" in the country. It appears to be only a matter of time before China recognizes the Talban's de facto control of the country even as Washington remains formally committed to supporting the Kabul government. Although he urged his Afghan visitors not to allow their country to serve as a staging area for the East Turkestan Islamic Movement that seeks independence for Xinjiang, true to China's longstanding policy, Wang avoided any reference to the state of Afghanistan's internal affairs. As Taliban spokesman Mohammed Naeem put it, no doubt gleefully, "China ... said they will not interfere in Afghanistan's issues."

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/biden-administration-resumes-fast-track-deportation-flights/ar-AAMLuxK?ocid=uxbndlbing The Biden administration has continued to use the public health order, known as Title 42, which was invoked by former President Donald Trump at the start of the pandemic to expel migrants without allowing them to seek asylum. Biden has declined to use Title 42 to deport minors crossing into the U.S. The administration was expected to start phasing out its use of Title 42 this summer, beginning with allowing migrant families to seek asylum. But as the U.S. enters the next uncertain phase of the pandemic and returns to mitigation measures such as masks, the administration has delayed lifting the restrictions. Democratic lawmakers and immigration advocates have called on the Biden administration to ditch the Trump-era policy, saying its use is unlawful, inhumane and not justified by public health. The groups say migrants could instead be tested for Covid and isolated upon entering the U.S. to prevent the spread of the virus.
