Default DE agents tell farm family they have too many animals for personal consumption

FDA Invades Non-Commercial Amish Farm

Quote:
Agents Joshua Schafer and Deborah Haney, from the Delaware FDA office, drove past Allgyer’s “No Trespassing” signs and up his driveway almost to his barn, where Allgyer happened to be outside. Allgyer approached the car, the agents got out and Allgyer asked them why they were there. They produced a piece of paper, asked Allgyer if he was Dan Allgyer, which Allgyer confirmed, asked him his middle initial and phone number, entered the information on the paper, told Allgyer they were there to do an inspection and started reading the paper to him, saying it gave them jurisdiction to be there.

The agents – Schafer did most of the talking – said they had a right to be there because “you produce food for human consumption.” Dan asked why they believed that and they said, “Well, you have cows. You cannot be consuming all the milk you produce.”
Anyone in Delaware know if the local newspapers have picked up this story?

That has to be the worst article I've read in the last year.

The Amish do not have telephones to use to call lawyers.
The Amish do have friends and neighbors who are not Amish, but the fact that one of them was driving a truck is suspicious.

Perhaps the local media aren't picking up on it for a valid reason.

Agreed. The title says it was in PA and the text says in DE. Allgyer is not a particularly Amish surname. I suspect that they could be Mennonite which don't consider driving or telephones verbotten.

Again, that why I was wondering if there was any other news from someone more local.

Another thing, as far as I know the Amish do business in the farm trade by the same rules other farm businesses abide by albeit they use different mechanical techniques. Seems odd that a farm would be targeted by the FDA because of the number of animals on it.
There is something more to this I hope and by that, I hope it is monkey business by the writers of this article.

Dunno...

I've been to Amish communities where there is a "community" phone, usually a pay phone located in an area accessible to several houses in common. (Nobody "owns" the phone, which is owned and placed there, apparently, by the phone company.) I know that most Amish usually have some local hired guy (non-Amish) to drive them to jobs and other needed locations. I'm guessing the "Ivan" character may have been similarly employed.

Only other link I've found is from World Net Daily:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=125390

It's mostly just a reprint of the linked story, although they apparently did determine the FDA agents were on a farm in PA, but based out of offices in Delaware.
