North Korea calls Trump statement "a declaration of war"

UNITED NATIONS -- North Korea's top diplomat said President Trump's tweet that leader Kim Jong Un "won't be around much longer" was a declaration of war against his country by the United States.

"This is clearly a declaration of war," Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said through a translator in New York Monday. "... The U.N. charter stipulates individual member states' rights to self-defense. Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down the United States' strategic bombers even when they're not yet inside the airspace border of our country."

Ri referred to Mr. Trump's tweet Saturday night that said: "Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

Ri said: "The question of who won't be around much longer will be answered then."

CBS News foreign affairs analyst Pamela Falk reports the North Korean issue has been the subject of several talks at the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York. Mr. Trump met with the president of South Korea and the prime minister of Japan about North Korea last week.

"The real question is Russia and China," Falk said. "Their foreign ministers at this U.N. General Assembly made clear what they want is more diplomatic effort."

Mr. Trump's tweets have sparked or stoked several controversies during the first year of his presidency, including his recent criticism of NFL players who kneel during the national anthem as a form of protest.

Even some of the president's supporters aren't fans of how he uses Twitter, as one told "60 Minutes" special contributing correspondent Oprah Winfrey in a roundtable discussion broadcast Sunday night.

"I still don't like his attacks, his Twitter attacks, if you will, on other politicians," a man named Tom said. "I don't think that's appropriate. But, at the same time, his actions speak louder than words. And I love what he's doing to this country. Love it."

North Korea has been trying to convince other governments to condemn Mr. Trump for vowing to "totally destroy" the country in his speech to the United Nations, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports.

In a letter sent to foreign parliaments, North Korea called Mr. Trump's threat an "intolerable insult," North Korean state media reported, and the country's foreign minister had said Mr. Trump's words made North Korea's "rocket's visit to the U.S. mainland inevitable all the more."

It was not immediately clear which governments had been sent the letter, Tracy says, but it was part of what appeared to be a new approach of trying to turn Mr. Trump's threats to destroy North Korea against him.

Trump already drew his proverbial "red line" and Korea ignored it. He is trying to be Mr Tough Guy but it won't work. Only way US can stop Korean nuclear program is to take it out militarily- and that is exactly why Korea wanted to go nuclear -to deter any attacks. Threatening them convinces them that they were right to try to go nuclear and make them even more reluctant to give them up.

North Korea Stages Massive Anti-US Rally After Trump's UN Speech

U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s first speech to the United Nations General Assembly has infuriated North Korea. After North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un released a public statement condemning Trump on September 22, more than 100,000 people in Pyongyang were mobilized to rally against the “U.S. imperialists” over the weekend. North Korean state media called the rallies part of an “anti-U.S. showdown.”

On September 19, Trump threatened to “totally destroy North Korea” and taunted Kim Jong-un as a “Rocket Man” in his first speech to the United Nations. In response, Kim Jong-un in person issued a strong statement on September 22, condemning Trump’s “unprecedented rude nonsense one has never heard from any of his predecessors” and threatening that Trump would “face results beyond his expectation.” Kim’s statement has been publicly broadcast to the whole country and has dominated all North Korean news media since then.

On September 23, Pyongyang launched a series of mass rallies against Trump. The largest one took place at Pyongyang’s Kim Il-sung Square, with multiple high-level government officials as well as more than 100,000 people attended the rally, according to KCNA.

Kim Jong-un’s earlier statement was first read to the thousands of people gathering at the square, according to KCNA. Then multiple officials made sensational speeches, vowing to protect North Korea and “achieve the final victory.”

For example, Choe Hak-chol, vice-chairman of the Pyongyang City Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), asserted that all the Party members and people in Pyongyang are “aflame with the will to completely remove the U.S. imperialists, the sworn enemy, from the globe.”

Cha Hui-rim, chairman of the Pyongyang City People’s Committee, claimed that Trump’s remarks “clearly proved” that North Korea’s developing “invincible military capacities” was “absolutely right” and should be “upheld to the last.” Ri Il-bae, a commanding officer of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, said: “We are waiting for the moment of final decisive battle to remove the U.S., empire of evil, from the globe.”

The latest anti-U.S. mobilization involved senior officials too. While ordinary North Korean people had to demonstrate in the open square, members of the Presidium of the North Korean Supreme People’s Assembly, the Cabinet, all ministries and various national institutions held a grand rally at the People’s Palace of Culture on September 23, too.

Kim Yong-nam, the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, presided over the rally. As the “nominal head of state” of North Korea, Kim Yong-nam carries symbolic influence.

This anti-U.S. campaign has been the largest one in North Korea since Trump came into office. It is obvious that Trump’s aggressive bombast has seriously irritated Kim. Thus, he is determined to mobilize the whole nation with anti-U.S. anger.

The Korean war never actually ended. They only signed a cease fire agreement in 1953. A peace treaty was supposed to follow but never did.

Aides warned Trump not to attack North Korea's leader personally before his fiery U.N. address

Senior aides to President Trump repeatedly warned him not to deliver a personal attack on North Korea’s leader at the United Nations this week, saying insulting the young despot in such a prominent venue could irreparably escalate tensions and shut off any chance for negotiations to defuse the nuclear crisis.

Trump’s derisive description of Kim Jong Un as “Rocket Man” on “a suicide mission” and his threat to “totally destroy” North Korea were not in a speech draft that several senior officials reviewed and vetted Monday, the day before Trump gave his first address to the U.N. General Assembly, two U.S. officials said.

Some of Trump’s top aides, including national security advisor H.R. McMaster, had argued for months against making the attacks on North Korea’s leader personal, warning it could backfire.

But Trump, who relishes belittling his rivals and enemies with crude nicknames, felt compelled to make a dramatic splash in the global forum.

Some advisors now worry that the escalating war of words has pushed the impasse with North Korea into a new and dangerous phase that threatens to derail the months-long effort to squeeze Pyongyang’s economy through sanctions to force Kim to the negotiating table.

A detailed CIA psychological profile of Kim, who is in his early 30s and took power in late 2011, assesses that Kim has a massive ego and reacts harshly and sometimes lethally to insults and perceived slights.

It also says that the dynastic leader — Kim is the grandson of the communist country’s founder, Kim Il Sung, and son of its next leader, Kim Jong Il — views himself as inseparable from the North Korean state.

As predicted, Kim took Trump’s jibes personally and especially chafed at the fact that Trump mocked him in front of 200 presidents, prime ministers, monarchs and diplomats at the U.N.

Kim volleyed insults back at Trump in an unprecedented personal statement Thursday, calling Trump “a mentally deranged U.S. dotard” and a “gangster” who had to be tamed “with fire.”

Kim’s foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, threatened to respond with “the most powerful detonation,” a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

Trump lobbed another broadside Friday, tweeting that Kim “is obviously a madman” who starves and kills his own people and “will be tested like never before.”

The clash may undermine Trump’s other efforts on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings.
