I'm sure it's just a temporary measure to get us through this "emergency." After all, The Great Orange Hope has declared that we'd never resort to socialism, not even nationalist socialism. You believe him, don't you?

Nationalize industries??? HE is going full blown Communist?

@Swordsmyth will be digging ditches to fill them back up to make us rich again.
If he does nationalize an industry and uses these powers it's going to be game over.
I suspect he has his eyes on the stock exchange. He might want to prop it up some how.
What else could he have in mind? Maybe car factories in Mich.
Speaking of which, isn’t this what Paul Krugman wanted?
Or urged we needed?
Something of an alien invasion... we are all going to be so rich.
If only we had a @krugminator to explain this all to me.
No doubt productivity will soar once the post office starts running the factories...
I guess this is what Trump meant when he called himself a wartime President.
He's going to make all the mistakes that inept wartime governments make in a futile attempt to replace the price system.

Any one of you going to call out Amash for demanding "immediate cash relief for Americans"?

President Trump announced on Wednesday that he will be invoking the Defense Production Act in an effort to help the private sector ramp-up manufacturing and distribution of emergency medical supplies and equipment amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Is there a news source with a link about this?

Trump was not specific on the details of what the act would be used for – besides mentioning ventilators and masks – but below is a look at what the three main sections of the Defense Production Act:
- Companies are required to accept and prioritize contracts from the government and to prioritize “materials, services, and facilities to promote the national defense or to maximize domestic energy supplies.” While this provision has historically been used to ramp up military production, in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic the act will be used for medical supplies.
- The second provision in the act provides financial measures, such as loans, loan guarantees, purchases, and purchase commitments, to speed up the production of materials “needed to support national defense and homeland security procurement requirements.”
- The act also addresses voluntary agreements – or what the government says is “an association of private interests, approved by the Government to plan and coordinate actions in support of the national defense.” The proviso permits business competitors to work together to plan and coordinate measures to increase the supply of materials.
Along with the three main provisions, the act also provides the government with the authority to obtain information from businesses, authorizes establishment of the National Defense Executive Reserve, and a Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States – which works on the effects on national security of certain mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers related to foreign investment in the U.S.
When the act is invoked it requires the administration to file an annual report to Congress on the impact of offsets on the defense preparedness, industrial competitiveness, employment, and trade from the act.

President Donald Trump said at the White House Tuesday he wanted the federal government to send direct payments to Americans suffering economically from the coronavirus as part of a larger rescue package.
“We’re going big,” Trump said, adding, “We want to go big, go solid.”
The proposal was detailed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday during a press briefing at the White House.
“We’re looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin said, adding, “Americans need cash now and the president wants to get cash now.”
Mnuchin said that Americans could expect an individual stimulus within two weeks as he continued to negotiate with Congress.
He added that wealthy Americans would not get direct payments as they did not need it.
“I think it’s clear, we don’t need to send people who make millions of dollars a year checks, OK?” Mnuchin said to reporters. Trump agreed. “Obviously some people shouldn’t be getting checks for $1,000.
Mnuchin said that some of the reported funding numbers of $850 billion for a rescue were probably more expensive than the final bill would be, but that details would be released later in the day.
“This is stuff that needs to be done now, the president has instructed to me that this is no fault to American workers,” he said.
Trump said there were four different ways to get funding directly to Americans, and said that although he supported a payroll tax cut, he was looking at a better way to get funding to Americans faster.
“We want to do something much faster than that,” Trump said.
