Anti-Trump Professor Thwarted In Bid to Share ICE Employee Data

Twitter and other online platforms are shutting down efforts to reveal the names of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employees following the backlash against the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance policy at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Developer Sam Lavigne, who claims to be an adjunct professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, created a database on GitHub that revealed the names of more than 1,500 ICE agents — with the data scraped from the LinkedIn business networking site.
In a now-deleted Medium post, Lavigne justified the database, saying, “As ICE continues to ramp up its inhumane surveillance and detention efforts, I believe it’s important to document what’s happening, and by whom, in any way we can.”


But the blogging platform suspended the post detailing the information on the grounds of "doxxing" – the intentional publication of personal information -- Lavigne told the Verge.
GitHub explained in a statement why it removed the information about ICE agents.
“We removed the project because it violates our community guidelines,” a GitHub spokesperson said. “In general, we have policies against use of GitHub for doxxing and harassment, and violating a third party’s privacy.”


Twitter also began cracking down on accounts that tweeted information about ICE employees. Russel Neiss, a coder, created an account that automatically revealed information from the database, BuzzFeed reported. The database is reportedly now being circulated in a form of publicly accessible Google document.
Lavigne told the Verge that though he thinks the "doxxing" concerns raised by the database he created are valid, he believes “the information is already out there, and if people want to embark on individual campaigns of harassment, then they’re going to be doing that no matter what.”
Fox News reached out to New York University asking for a comment.

Privacy is dead, and with this attitude and momentum at this rate, soon we won't even be able to hold a private thought in our own mind..

People certainly have the right to privacy. But putting certain information out in the public is making that information public. I just think it’s funny how when someone compiled a list of government spooks then all of a sudden it’s privacy this and privacy that.

Nothing new here. Targeting people and harassing them is old school. Government does it to criminals, criminal gangs do it to the Police. The Police like to nip it in the bud (even if it means backing off and calling a truce) as it easily spirals out of control.

eta- I take a little offense to your use of the term “enemy invaders.” That’s a little strong, some little Mexican hopping the border to make a better life for his family isn’t an enemy invader. Families who overstay their green cards are not enemy invaders.

The people you refer to are "foreign" invaders but they are mixed in with "enemy" invaders, both need to be removed and ICE can't easily tell the difference because the "enemies" hide among the "foreigners" on purpose.
The left is inciting violence and then some of them try to provide the targets like this loser, just look at the Fonda thread and you will see one example of the calls for violence that is the context of this.

Besides that even government employees have a right to some privacy, not all their information is public property.

Antifa, the leftist group known for Brownshirt tactics, is at it again. It just tweeted out a list of 1,595 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents’ identities — information passed to it by a New York University college professor. As the Daily Caller reports:
The Twitter account “nebraska antifa” sent out a tweet to its followers on Tuesday that linked to the personal information of ICE officers compiled from information found on LinkedIn.
“Some enterprising hero archived the ICE employees listed on linkedin,” the tweet reads.
A Twitter user who goes by Sam Lavigne compiled the list of ICE agents’ identities, titles and locations. In a tweet on Tuesday morning he says he “scraped LinkedIn for people that work for ICE.”
The Medium link in Lavigne’s was no longer available as of Tuesday night.
While the original post of ICE personal information has been removed, the Antifa Twitter account linked to an archived post, where viewers can access the Lavigne’s original database.
Lavigne created the database in response to ICE’s “inhumane” efforts in on the border, according to his archived Medium post.
“I’ve downloaded and made available the profiles of (almost) everyone on LinkedIn who works for ICE, 1,595 people in total. While I don’t have a precise idea of what should be done with this data set, I leave it here with the hope that researchers, journalists, and activists will find it useful,” Lavigne wrote on Medium.

Of course, what Lavigne really hopes is that this sharing of private information — a favored leftist tactic known as “doxxing” — will lead to harassment of, and maybe even violence against, the ICE agents. This accords with Rule 12 in Saul “the Red” Alinsky’s book Rules for Radicals: “Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.” The book, which is dedicated to Lucifer (seriously), is considered a bible of leftist activism.

A massive database of current U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employees scraped from public LinkedIn profiles has been removed from the tech platforms hosting the data. The project was undertaken by Sam Lavigne, self-described artist, programmer and researcher in response to recent revelations around ICE's detention practices at the southern U.S. border.
Lavigne posted the database to GitHub on Tuesday and by Wednesday the repository had been removed. The database included the name, profile photo, title and city area of every ICE employee who listed the agency as their employer on the professional networking site. A more in-depth version of the data pulled all public LinkedIn data from the pool of users, including previous employment, education history and any other information those users opted to make public. The total database lists this information for 1,595 ICE employees, from the company's CTO on down to low-level workers.

The project accompanied a Medium post about the project's aims that has since been removed by the platform:

I find it helpful to remember that as much as internet companies use data to spy on and exploit their users, we can at times reverse the story, and leverage those very same online platforms as a means to investigate or even undermine entrenched power structures. It’s a strange side effect of our reliance on private companies and semi-public platforms to mediate nearly all aspects of our lives.

The data set appears to have violated GitHub and Medium guidelines against doxing. Medium's anti-harassment policy specifically forbids doxing and defines it broadly, preventing "the aggregation of publicly available information to target, shame, blackmail, harass, intimidate, threaten, or endanger."

GitHub's own policy leading to the data's removal is less clear, though the company told The Verge the repository was removed due to "doxxing and harassment." The platform's terms of service forbid uses of GitHub that "violate the privacy of any third party, such as by posting another person's personal information without consent." This leaves some room for interpretation, and it is not clear that data from a public-facing social media profile is "personal" under this definition. GitHub allows researchers to scrape data from external sites in order to aggregate it "only if any publications resulting from that research are open access."

Professional information and LinkedIn profiles of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees were published in a searchable online database by WikiLeaks, the organization said Thursday.
"ICEPatrol" appeared to provide professional information and profiles from the professional social networking site of government employees.
Information such as job titles, work history, education and city of employment appeared on many of the profiles. It was not immediately clear how many employees were targeted, but the site said more than 9,300 profiles were listed.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
"ICEPatrol is an important public resource for understanding ICE programs and increasing accountability, especially in light of the actions taken by ICE lately, such as the separation of children and parents at the US border," the organization said in a tweet.

The release comes amid heightened backlash against the Trump administration for a "zero tolerance" immigration policy that separated more than 2,000 children from their parents who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that aims to stop the separation families while still keep a "zero tolerance" policy in place.
WikiLeaks also said it had previously tried to publish the information, but that it was "censored" by Github and Medium.
