Thread: I'm upgrading to a Non-Smartphone. Any tips?

    I'm upgrading to a Non-Smartphone. Any tips?

My wife is sick of the constant wasting of time with internet access on her smart phone. She is spending about 15 hours a month on the stupid thing. I'm getting rid of mine too to support her. Also, I hate how much they are spying on us. I'd like to have a good old fashioned non-smartphone.

Anyone else do this? What is the best deal for a basic cell phone? I'd hate to lose the touch screen but... if that is what it takes. Tips?

If you don't want a smart phone, why do you want a touch screen? Just for typing in text messages?

You can hook up a rotary phone to a VOIP adapter and then connect that to a 3G or 4G device, and just tape it together and carry it with you
It's all about taking action and not being lazy. So you do the work, whether it's fitness or whatever. It's about getting up, motivating yourself and just doing it.

I think this is not exactly what the OP is asking about. This is not a cordless solution. Where will you be getting power from?

“[T]he enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table.” (Heller, 554 U.S., at ___, 128 S.Ct., at 2822.)

How long before "going liberal" replaces "going postal"?

    Essentially yes.

Think I found half of it...

With Tello I can make a custom non-smartphone plan with unlimited texting and calls for $18. Over a year that will save my wife and I a whopping $500.

They let me bring my own phone. The question remains however, what is the best possible non-smartphone phone if I don't want to go back to texting with a flip phone? I know that a few have keyboards... does anyone have one that they genuinely like?

Thanks for all the help thus far! It is very much appreciated.

Mr Animal loves his dumb phone. I get him a Tracphone flip phone (he likes that it fits in his pocket without taking up space and he never worries about someone stealing it if he leaves it somewhere) at the Dollar General for $10.00 with double minutes for life and I buy him a yearly card for 100.00 (ends up being around 800 minutes a year). He's all set. He never uses up all the minutes and if you don't let the card expire, the unused minutes roll over.

Before you buy a card, check for coupon codes. Tracphone has tons of them. Also, Tracphone used to have touchscreen phones that weren't smartphones. I'm not sure if they still do, though.

Us no longer. I swear... they lower the quality on basic phones to spite you for not using a smartphone.

Wife got a phone for me,

Samsung,, through Verizon. Just a phone.. and I still hate it.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

This. It cost me $20 and has triple minutes. $80 gets 1200 min. and plenty of text if you are so inclined. Phone is an Samsung Android 4.0.4. So it has a screen and texting is fairly easy. It's been through both a wash and a dry cycle and is still working.

If you have money, could look at a Blackphone, it is a smart phone, but locked down and very very private. Havent had a chance to get my hands on one yet tho.

Mine is an LG. It was $10 at the dollar store 4 years ago. Still works fine. Has a keyboard for text messages. I have net 10. It's $20 a month for 200 minutes. I never use them all. I hate talking on the phone and barely tolerate texting.

Walk into your local dollar store and see what they have.

Thanks for the tip. I think that I found the plan. It is through a company called Tello. Unlimited texting and 500 minutes (that rollover) every month for $13. Works with any existing phone except blackberries for some reason.

I use an LG cosmos 3 as I just refuse to get a smart phone and have to pay for a data plan.
It is a slider phone with a keyboard for texting:

There are carriers that don't make you have a data plan, or whose data plan is per-data, so if you just turn off mobile data you won't get charged. I do that on Google Fi because there's wifi everyplace that I would want data service. Rest of the plan is $20/mo for unlimited everything.

Find something under $20 online that lets you prepay minutes.
Once a year rinse repeat with a freshy.
Rest assured if it doesn't have a wire on it someone else is listening, so try not to use the thing.

No thanks. Those types of carriers have very poor service...

If you are not Verizon here, your calls don't connect, and if the do they get dropped soon as one their customer comes in range.

I had to switch off ATT to Verizon just to get a reliable service, no $#@!ing way a boost mobile or other $#@! tier company would get any service.

Here is the Google Fi coverage where I live..

If only... We still haven't done anything yet. Tello has been impossible to contact so far (are they even still in business...?) We had Cricket before T-Mobile and the basic plan there was like $25 a month. Better coverage than Tello. I don't know why it irks me so much that you thought this was a 'performance' but I've learned anything it is that people in the liberty movement tend to be a bit cynical.

When I had a dumb tracfone I did a few text-y things and it worked okay. not pretty and easy to use, but more or less functional if you aren't in a hurry to text back n' forth.
