Leopard kills Buddhist monk meditating in forest

A monk meditating in a forest in the Indian state of Maharashtra has died in a leopard attack, officials say.Rahul Walke had been "meditating under a tree" in the Tadoba forest, which is a protected tiger reserve, officials told PTI news agency.Walke had been attached to a Buddhist temple which is inside the forest, but he had walked to a spot quite far away from it to meditate.

Forest officials said they had warned the monks against going too far inside."I would like to tell everyone not to go inside the forest," GP Narawane, a forest official, told BBC Marathi. However, there are now plans to capture the leopard. "We have set up two cages and a camera trap, and we will try to tranquilise the animal," Mr Narawane said. State government officials have said they will give Mr Walke's family 1.2m rupees ($16,762; £13,280).

we will try to tranquilise the animal," Mr Narawane said
Putting him on tranquilizers might stop some anger issues, won’t it still be hungry? Sounds like toxic masculinity. I recommend some ADD drugs and female hormones too.

Meditation might help the leopard. Sounds like it has some experience with how meditation works.

Indian leopards are large and vicious , to be avoided . If they feel cornered or trapped they will attack anyone they can close on . They probably kill and maim hundreds per year in India . They have a particularly nasty disposition and will seek revenge of being bothered by continuing killing rampages long after they could easily escape . If a city borders the forest you can be certain there are leopards hunting in the streets at night in search of chickens , dogs or any live animal they can find to include small , unarmed people .

The forest, roughly 510 miles (825 km) west from the state capital Mumbai, falls within a protected reserve for big cats where four other fatal attacks have occurred in recent weeks.
The monks, in the area for an annual prayer conference, had ignored warnings from local officials about venturing too far into the forest, police said.
The attack followed a separate fatal incident on Monday, when shopkeeper Sandeep Arjun was killed outside his stall on the outskirts of the forest.

It was unclear whether the same leopard was responsible for both attacks.
Three more deaths attributed to leopards and tigers have been reported around the reserve in the past month, officials say.

I once hunted and fished with a retired Gurkha soldier who had unsuccessfully hunted for that leopard . I taught him to hunt them in case the need happened again .

Could be a female with some sort of postpartum depression goin' on... in any event, I wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley/forest.

They can go larger than 4' 8" long with a 40 inch tail and over 170 lbs , more like a big panther . In 2016 a male man eater was shot in Bilaspur that measured nearly nine feet head to tail ( 8' 7" ) and it only weighed in around 160 . They get bigger . It can jump ten feet high , long jump 20 feet and run nearly 40 mph . They can easily take a large wild boar or any deer .

Here then are ten of the animals likely to have killed our ancient and not so ancient kin. The fact that you are alive means your direct ancestors escaped these fates, if not forever then at least long enough to reproduce.

    1. Lions and tigers and leopards, oh #$*@!

Leopards are extraordinarily good at eating primates. They are stealthy. They run fast (at least faster than our ancestors). They leap powerfully (up into primates’ sleeping trees). And they can carry great weights (our bodies) to wherever it might be safe for them to pause and dine. With this combination of traits, leopards have been breathing down our necks for as long as 10 million years.

Today’s leopards show what our ancestors had to contend with. In one study in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, 70 percent of baboon deaths were attributed to African leopards. In another study, half of the mammals that leopards killed were monkeys or chimpanzees; they also kill young gorillas. When scientists pick through leopard scat, many of the bones they find are from primates—ribs, fingers, toes and skulls, all of them remarkably similar to our own skeleton. Baboons seem to get eaten by leopards at night, monkeys during the day. Scientists, on the other hand, are most likely to get eaten when they pause while picking through leopard scat to say, “Hey, I think this looks fresh!”
