Automated function. An example is a business application that automatically wishes happy birthday to a site's registered user. The clock hits twelve midnight and a script sends a message to the user's account.
I don't need it for the specific purpose mentioned above, but that is just an example. I need it in connection with a grass roots project I posted on RPF. My use of the script would not, of course, be nefarious. It would be more about spreading information. I would rather just do this project in batches rather that excessively logging in and doing repetitive tasks.
