Rener Gracie: Police Training is a Disaster (Deep Dive)

The average police officer in America receives less than four (4) hours of hands-on defensive tactics training per year, and it’s not enough. We have long hypothesized that regular off-duty jiu-jitsu training (at least 1 hour per week) for law enforcement officers would increase officer safety, lower department liability, and reduce the likelihood of injuries to suspects, but the evidence supporting this hypothesis has been mostly anecdotal, until now.

On April 1, 2019, Marietta Police Department (MPD) instituted a training program that made weekly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training mandatory for all new hires during the five months they were in the police academy. The training took place at a carefully vetted civilian owned/operated BJJ academy within the community. The program was so successful that on July 1, 2020, Marietta PD extended the department-sponsored BJJ training opportunity to all in-service officers. To date, 95 of the 145 sworn MPD officers have opted in to the BJJ program and 50 officers have not. The officers who averaged at least (1) BJJ class per week, are referred to as “BJJ officers.” Here is a summary of the data collected thus far:

    Training Injuries
-MPD has had 95 officers attend over 2,600 civilian-operated BJJ classes with one (1) reported training injury.

    Taser Deployments
-Since the inception of the program, non-BJJ officers used their Taser in 77% of Use of Force (UOF) incidents.
-BJJ officers used their Taser in 54% of UOF incidents (85% of which were used to stop a foot pursuit – not to end the physical altercation)
-23% reduction in Taser deployments in the BJJ officer group.

    UOF Injuries to Officers
-In the 18 months prior to instituting mandatory BJJ training, 29 officers were injured while carrying out arrests.
-In the 18 months after instituting mandatory BJJ training for new hires, 15 officers were injured while carrying out arrests.
-48% reduction in officer injuries department wide.
-None of the injured officers were BJJ officers.

    UOF Injuries to Suspects
-In 2020, there were 33 UOF incidents involving Marietta PD officers: 20 incidents involving non-BJJ officers, and 13 incidents involving BJJ officers.
-In the 20 incidents involving non-BJJ officers, the suspect sustained injuries requiring hospitalization 65% of the time (13 incidents of suspect hospitalization).
-In the 13 incidents involving BJJ officers, the suspect sustained injuries requiring hospitalization 31% of the time (4 incidents of suspect hospitalization).
-Serious injuries to a suspect are 53% less likely when interacting with BJJ officers.
-BJJ officers are 59% less likely to engage in UOF than non-BJJ officers.

    Financial Implications
-Based on an average workers’ comp claim of $4,768, the total estimated savings from the reduction in officers’ injuries is estimated at $66,752.
-Training Investment: $26,000 (2600 department-sponsored classes charged at $10 per class).
    -Net Savings for MPD: $40,752

It's a disaster if cops really are intended to protect and to serve.

If cops are intended to keep the rabble down, sow distrust of state and local governments, and divide us for easy conquer, it's no disaster. It's a complete success.

I agree. However, I think we should take care not to underestimate the power of the ocean of "normie opinion". Intentionally gaming public opinion is the domain of the politicians and I have no interest in that whatsoever. But I am very interested in understand how the "elites" can be forced to cut out the BS as a result of simple questions from the mass body of the "normie" public. Why do police officers need to take it to 11 on a scale of 1-10 so quickly and so often? That's a perfectly reasonable question. "The job is SO dangerous, look at all the officers killed during a routine stop." Without delving into that whole discussion, be that as it may, it still doesn't explain why officers routinely forego the use of common-sense... visibly so. The explanation (which anybody on RPF understands) is that they are not legally required to use common sense (that's what "immunity" is all about), so why should they? But they will never be required to use common sense until the mass of the public begins to ask some of these simple basic question. Patriots have access to an untapped ocean of power in the "mass innocent inquiry." Rather than getting dragged down into the political jockeying for manipulated public opinion, maybe we should just start focusing on genuine public opinion, like in the old days.

"Why aren't cops getting extensive training in jiu-jitsu or another art that specializes in grappling/restraint in up-close, high-tension circumstances?"

Good question, John Q Public. Let's find out...

Indeed, seems like the time is right for that. It seldom works as well as we'd like, but often works better than we give it credit for.

That's exactly right. And rather than trying to spin this into some kind of "race" issue, he's just dropping facts. And they are not "spin" facts, either, just fact-facts... the cold, hard facts of day-to-day business operations for police and city officials. And instead of just screaming, "There's a problem! [true] We mUsT dEfuNd!!!", he's identifying a massive, unsolved problem that is a primary contributing factor to excessive police use-of-force and providing concrete solutions. And while Rener is an interested party (his schools will experience increased business if many cities implement this kind of program), he already has forces that have either already signed on, or are in the pipeline to do it. In other words, there are cities/departments out there that have already run the numbers and believe this is a net-win for them. So it's not merely an "infomercial" in that respect. One of the facts he refrains from mentioning is that BJJ is already heavily utilized by Brazilian police. I suppose he passes over that fact since he's addressing US police who won't necessarily be inspired by the practices of a foreign nation but the point is that it's already passed muster on a national police scale in at least one other country. So this isn't "fantasy" martial arts advice like, "If only all cops knew kung fu, there wouldn't be so much needless police violence!"
