Quite a dilemma for so many people. And a “principle” reversal for so many pundits. NFL players criticizing America was good, NBA people criticizing China is bad. And vice versa. Kind of funny to see so many switch sides.

The fact that they banned someone for supporting human rights does nothing but show their true colors.

    They are all about money?

    Here's the problem.

In Asia, they have huge stadiums filled with people who watch other people play video games on giant monitors for sport. They are called ESports.

China could very well ban Blizzard Entertainment if they started allowing that kind of stuff to go on.

So on the one hand, it would be great if they stood up against them.

But for the sake of the investors, at least in the short term, this may have been their best decision financially.

Did everybody watch South Park last week?

It was about Hollywood being controlled by China. All of the movies that come out now have to be China friendly. So they aren't able to make certain kinds of jokes and talk about certain themes and topics. It has made the movies in Hollywood more narrow and less entertaining.

South Park dissed China hard and said in no uncertain terms are they willing to censor themselves for the sake of getting into the Chinese market.

South Park is now banned in China.

This incident happened RIGHT AFTER the episode came out. South Park has a knack for taking on relevant topics on the right time.

What remains consistent is the point that in America the government doesn't punish people and companies that say things it doesn't like.

As a principle maybe. Didn't stop Lois Lerner or probably a million other exceptions (incidents).

There are always abuses of power and biases but the principle prevents the worst open abuses that China engages in.

Except that "human rights" is in the eye of the beholder. "Bake the cake" is now a human right. Free college is on the verge of being a human right. UBI will be next up, as well as universal housing.

Whatever happened to that Red Dawn re-imagining in which they had to scrub China as the villains and make them out to be Koreans. Did it ever even get released. Lol.

I side with business in this matter. An employee who is working or is representing a business does not have full freedom of speech in that capacity. The employer has every right to limit what they say on company time. And the remedy is very traditional and simple, they can be fired. That's my principle on this.

I side with the business that it is something they can legally do, otherwise we are no better than China.

But it would be awesome if Blizzard stood up against China and sided with the employees/winner on principle.

In this particular case, I view China as the customer.

It's a separate question as to whether a single collective customer should be so big and so powerful, and also whether that collective customer should be a government. I would encourage businesses to do whatever they want, and if that means dropping China as a customer, so be it. On the other hand if a business really wants China as a customer, they will have to placate that customer. The customer is always right, after all.

On the government question, it's not isolated to China. It is an analogous situation to the US government having control over technology companies and the media. A company could always refuse to do business with a government, but it always seems that the incentive is the other way around. It's good to have a primary customer with endless deep pockets, being the market referee, and also the writer of the rules.

I believe they released it, I think I saw it. Apparently it wasn't very memorable. But it is an interesting topic worthy of a separate thread...

I view China as the communist government that it is, it has imposed itself between the customers in the Chinese market and the companies that want to sell to them.
China is wrong and the companies are wrong to deal with a tyrannical regime and enable it to impose its will on American customers in addition to its own captive population, it would be debatable if the companies made Chinese versions of their products and made them available to the Chinese while following China's rules but imposing Chinese tyranny on American customers is close to treason and indefensible.

Blizzard's Motto "Every Voice Matters" is embronzed in a large placard outside their main studio. Anopnymous employees have been covering it with paper since the banning.
Reminds me of some company that once had a motto of "don't be evil".

It's another dilema. A company can refuse to do business in China, but that is highly unlikely if they are making money. We have already observed that many corporate executives and Wall Street would sell their mother's souls and their children to make a few extra bucks.

The other course of action would be collective action in the form of a government wanting to get involved, and passing laws and engaging in trade negotiations with the "bad" government. Many people do not like that option, at least not during the current Administration.

I merely mentioned it as the power the Chinese hold over business because of their huge market. From Hollyweird to Sports. I noticed Mark Cuban, who usually doesn't have much of a problem speaking his mind has been silent on twitter regarding the NBA brouhaha.

Blizzard player communities stood up to the suspension but I don't think anything will change the bottom line. These companies don't care about free speech because if they do the right thing, it always go under the radar until someone does something bad and makes the other choice look great.

After South Park took their stand, I have so much more respect for them now.

Apparently both creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are libertarians.

Apple also folded bigly to China.

It was a pretty big week for China, soft-power wise. Kind of ironic how they agreed to the deal giving Trump a semi-win today. They agreed to it on camera, not as good as on paper, but almost as good.

They are losing badly on the economic front, their soft power will evaporate when they collapse.
Meanwhile they are exposing big business for us.

Whistling past the graveyard, I think. China isn't collapsing anytime soon. Do you know how I know? Because companies that won't hesitate to offend every country on earth--including and especially the United States--tread ever so lightly in China, and in that other one-too. They are able to treat large segments of their population in a very 30's and 40's kind of way in the age of 'never again.' The magnitude of their momentum is absolutely depressing because their government is reactionary feudalism, come back for its biggest swing at the progress of man since... well... the English Nobles made John Lack land? Maybe earlier?

They are cataloguing this post, having made it I can even assure you my future prospects dim.
