US surveillance plane was downed in Afghanistan, Air Force chief of staff says

KABUL, Afghanistan — An Air Force surveillance aircraft crashed in central Afghanistan, the Air Force’s chief of staff said Monday as video of the purported wreckage circulated on social media Monday.

Gen. David Goldfein said the aircraft was a Bombardier E-11A, during a meeting with reporters in Washington on Monday. Goldfein did not confirm any further details.

“It appears we have lost an aircraft,” Goldfein said. “We don’t know the status of the crew.”

The plane crashed around 1:30 p.m. Monday in Ghazni province, and initial reports suggest two or three people died, said Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor.

Noori wasn’t initially able to confirm whether it was a U.S. aircraft that crashed in Deh Yak district, about 80 miles southwest of Kabul.

“We tried to send Afghan security forces to the scene,” Noori said, but they were pulled back due to security concerns.

The Taliban control large sections of Ghazni, which was the site of a surprise offensive in 2018.

Teams from the Red Cross and Red Crescent went to the crash site but weren’t able to send updates due to poor phone reception in the remote area, Noori said.

The Taliban said in a Pashto-language statement that the U.S. plane crashed and that their fighters “had downed it tactically.” They also said that “lots” of U.S. servicemembers died, The Associated Press reported. The Taliban are known to exaggerate their claims.

Tariq Ghazniwal, a journalist in the area affiliated with the Taliban, said that he saw the burning aircraft, AP reported. On Twitter, Ghazniwal told AP that he saw two bodies and that the front of the aircraft was burned badly.

Early reports stated the crash was an Ariana Airlines plane, but the company told AP that none of its planes had crashed in Afghanistan.

The Aviation Safety Network, which tracks aviation accidents, identified the E-11A by its Air Force tail number, 11-9358.

The Air Force’s fleet of four E-11A aircraft, outfitted with the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node payload, provides a unique capability in a country where mountains and poor communications infrastructure create a challenge for military operations, the service has said.

All of the service’s BACN aircraft are assigned to the 430th Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron and solely fly out of Kandahar Airfield, where they’ve been deployed for about a decade.

They are in the air every minute of the day, the Air Force has said.

The aircraft is “like Wi-Fi in the sky,” said Capt. Jacob Breth, an Air Force pilot quoted in a November 2018 statement.

The capability was developed in direct response to communications failures during one of the most well-known battles of the war, Operation Red Wings.

During that summer 2005 operation in Kunar province, a four-man Navy SEAL patrol was unable to establish communications with its combat operations center, leaving them vulnerable to the attack that left 19 special operations troops dead and only one survivor, Marcus Luttrell.

The former SEAL recounted the mission in the book “Lone Survivor,” which was later made into a movie.

In response to that incident, a Bombardier Global Express was outfitted to allow ground troops and the aircraft to talk to each other, the Air Force has said. Test pilots first deployed with the aircraft to Kandahar in 2008.

The bomber and heavy aircraft pilots — all volunteers for the duty — train on simulators before deploying and the first time they fly one for real is a combat mission, the Air Force said in a statement marking the airframe’s 10,000th sortie in March 2017.

An Air Force plane with “less than five onboard” crashed in eastern Afghanistan Monday, a U.S. military official told Fox News.

It was not immediately clear if there were any survivors and officials said there are no indications that the plane – an E-11A – was shot down. The plane is the military version of the civilian Bombardier Global Express business jet.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told The Associated Press that it crashed in the Ghazni province, which sits in the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains.

there are still very recent reports about an AAA passenger plane also downed in same area
Ariana Afghani Air denies it was any of their flights - so it could be a leased one carrying US military.

that would mean two planes downed and over 100 US casualties.

it will take hours to know for sure. the area is now very dark and its a war zone.

official Taliban statement does say multiple aircraft have been downed ...

GHAZNI, Jan. 21 – At around noon hours today, a special operations US aircraft on intelligence gathering mission over Ghazni province crashed in Sado Khelo area of Deh Yak district.

The aircraft was destroyed in the crash and all crew along with multiple senior CIA officials killed.

It should be mentioned that a number of enemy aircrafts and helicopters have been downed by Mujahideen in Helmand, Balkh and other provinces of the country in recent days.

The wreckage of the plane and corpses of dead are laying at the crash site.

While helicopters have proven vulnerable and accident-prone in Afghanistan, the loss of a US fixed-wing aircraft is relatively rare.

But the Taliban are not believed to have the sorts of anti-aircraft missiles needed to bring down a high-flying aircraft.

The plane involved is an E-11A, one of only four in the whole US Air Force.

Essentially it is an adapted Bombardier executive jet, chosen for its ability to fly at high altitude and with extended range. It is packed with electronics: its job is to enable better communications between air and ground forces, and between different types of aircraft operating in difficult terrain or using incompatible data links.

It is a bit like the wi-fi range extender that you install in a room with a poor signal. The aircraft - along with similar electronics mounted on unmanned systems - have played an important role in the Afghan conflict, where the mountainous landscape is a major problem for modern military communications.

There was no military response after Iraq base strikes that may have impacted deterrence.

If OP news claims are confirmed, what will be the response in this case at a time when US was supposed to be leaving Afghanistan and rebuilding America.

    Update...

They were the only two people aboard the Air Force E-11A electronic surveillance aircraft when it went down on Monday in Ghazni province, the official said, speaking Tuesday on the condition of anonymity ahead of an official announcement of the recovery. The identities of the two have not been publicly announced, pending notification of their relatives.

The official said the American recovery team met no Taliban resistance in reaching the crash site and said there is no indication that the plane was downed by hostile action.

Those may have been fakenews, later reports said 6 people were on board.

Also conflicting reports on responsibility claims, some reports said Talibans found the plane shot down in the area controlled by them but did not say it was shot down by them. US officials are also denying reports that Talibans shot it down.

This is from UK media and not confirmed by more reliable US MSM outlets like NYT, CNN:

CIA chief 'who orchestrated assassination of General Soleimani was among those killed in Afghanistan plane crash', Iranian news agency claims, as US military recover two bodies

    • Taliban claimed it shot down a US jet over Dih Yak, Afghanistan on Monday
    • US confirmed an E-11A aircraft crashed but denied it was shot down by Taliban
    • Pro-Kremlin and Iranian media reported CIA chief Michael D'Andrea was killed
    • Pentagon confirmed today two bodies were recovered from the crash site

An Iranian news agency has claimed a CIA chief who helped plan the assassination of general Qassem Soleimani was killed in a plane crash yesterday in Afghanistan.
The highly dubious report comes after a US official confirmed today that the remains of two American personnel had been recovered from the wreckage of the E-11A communications jet which crashed in the Dih Yak district.
The official added that there was no evidence it had been downed by enemy fire despite claims by the Taliban - amplified by Iranian media - that the jet had been shot down.
