Trump Suddenly Fires Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

No reason provided. He was appointed by disgraced dronegangsta, whom Trump had called "bad or sick guy" recently.

Trump Suddenly Fires Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

Vivek Murthy, appointed by the Obama Administration in 2014, will be replaced in the interim by his deputy, Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams.
    By Dan Taylor - April 22, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump Administration has unexpectedly fired U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, a holdover from the Obama Administration, and will replace him temporarily with his deputy, Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams. Murthy was asked to resign, and "after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration" he has been "relieved of his duties," the Department of Health and Human Services said in a widely reported statement. Trent-Adams has spent 24 years in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and is a former chief nurse officer of the Public Health Service.

If he would "suddenly fire" about a thousand more I might start to like him.

I'm confused. I thought it was understood that the new pres nominated a new surgeon general. I'm surprised this guy wasn't gone already.

In the old days every warship had a surgeon because some unlucky SOB had to saw off all the cannon fodder arms and legs. Payroll is looking a little bloated these days . I bet the cigarette admiral has never even done any of that ......

Like so many other things in the District of Calamity, it morphed from a welfare fund for disabled seamen to a position of national health nag.

    Post civil war of course.

In 1798, Congress established the Marine Hospital Fund, a network of hospitals that cared for sick and disabled seamen. The Marine Hospital Fund was reorganized along military lines in 1870 and became the Marine Hospital Service—predecessor to today’s United States Public Health Service. The service became a separate bureau of the Treasury Department with its own staff, administration, headquarters in Washington, D.C, and the position of Supervising Surgeon (later Surgeon General).[4]

I may be the lone dissenter, but I think the surgeon general position is one of the few good things the government does. Smoking does cause cancer. It was the famous (infamous?) "Surgeon General's Warning" that finally got people to wise up and take note. I think that's a positive way to deal with health issues rather than going around and making bad stuff contraband like what happened with marijuana and other illegal drugs. Remember Jocelyn Elders? She was the surgeon general that got fired for making the painfully obvious observations that masturbation doesn't cause STD transmission and that if we ended the war on drugs that would most likely reduce crime, but we didn't know what the other ramifications were so it was at least worth studying. Conservatives had a hissy fit and so spaghetti spine Clinton fired her. But guess what? It turns out she was more right than she could have realized. After pot was decriminalized in Colorado, not only did crime go down, but pot smoking among teens went down. It's an obvious result when you think about it. Legalized pot put street pot dealers out of business. And legal pot dealers aren't going to, generally, risk their license to sell to kiddos. So legalize drugs. It's for the children! Oh yeah. And Portugal legalized freedom (simple possession of all drugs) just like Ron Paul said should happen. The money they spent on arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning users they now spend on treatment for those who want it.

And ^that's why I can't stand "conservatives" any more than I can stand "liberals."

Yea, the fact that he lasted this long is a surprise to me. Also, who is he going to be replaced with? probably another clone with an R besides his name

I wish it would be a clone of Jocelyn Elders. We need a surgeon general now more than ever before who would put the final nail in the coffin of the drug war. Hers was a message that the majority of Americans are finally ready to hear.

Hmm...could be Trump doesn't like medical fascism. There is an agenda called Healthy People 2020. This aired over the last week and was definitely an eye opener.
