Remains of extinct cave lion found in Siberia. Russian scientists hope to clone it

Frozen remains of an extinct cave lion cub have been unearthed in Russia, according to local media reports. The specimen is so well-preserved, with its facial features intact and its head resting on its paw, that Russian scientists hope to clone it.
A local resident from the Siberian city of Yakutsk uncovered the remains of the prehistoric animal in September, according to the Siberian Times.

Because the cub is in such excellent condition, preserved by the region's permafrost landscape, Protopopov said it is likely a candidate for cloning.

I am thinking cloning Cave Lions may not be the greatest idea. Four feet tall and seven feet long or more. Or maybe 15 percent larger than the largest African lion you might find . Probably 900 pounds .

On the other hand you might be able to pick up some pretty sweet bounties for hunting them back to extinction after the Russkies realize their mistake.

Seriously? I understand the physics behind fluids and cold temps and would be greatly interested in what you figure your ambient temps were? Load on hydraulic pumps would be the biggest concern I would think? Those are arctic conditions, is there a ceiling? From what I understand at 35k it can be -60 on a normal winter day. If it was -60 at ground level, what was your elevation and temp? I find it fascinating that it is possible to still fly in these temps. Please educate me!

    -60 to -70 maybe?

Jet fuel freezes at around -40 degrees Fahrenheit. So when we fly in cold areas, like polar routes, a sample of our fuel is taken on the ground and the freeze point is relayed to the cockpit. We monitor the fuel temperature in flight. if need be, we can descend to warmer air and increase speed or fly an alternate route.

Holy cow... "Chasing warm zones" has got to be a pain. I am guessing fluids have additives and are heated using a re-circulatory system once under way but still. It's incredible considering the challenges. lol Dude... Hang on tight.

I have actually had to build wood fires under my fuel tanks on the shoulder to de-gel my stuff to get moving again. Or to get a reefer unit going again to HEAT vegetables to keep them from freezing and being ruined. But you can't really pull over and build a fire under your tanks. lol

    Kudos for having balls man...

Trouble in Paradise. Iron Lady Must Prevent Mob Vengeance in City after Yakut Woman is Kidnapped by Kyrgyz Immigrant and Raped.

Some 3,000 at protest rally after detention of 23 year old man and his 'accomplices’. …

The alleged attacker forced a 36 year old Yakut woman into his Toyota Corolla and raped her near some car garages before taking her to be guarded by two 'friends' at a car repair shop. The two men - also from Kyrgyzstan - fell asleep and she managed to escape, immediately reporting the alleged rape. …

A spontaneous rally of 200 was followed by a full-scale protest meeting addressed by Yakutia regional head Aisen Nikolayev and Yakutsk mayor Sardana Avksentyeva in a 3,000-seat sports stadium with many standing outside. This highly-charged session went on until midnight amid scenes of high emotion.

A mosque in the city has been put under armed guard by police amid fears of revenge attacks.

The mayor was quoted as saying at the rally: ‘We have been patient enough, but I think our patience has expired. We have to gather altogether and restore order. We are home, this is our city and we must get this message across.’

Nikolayev promised that the criminal will be ‘punished to the fullest extent of the law’. … He issued a call to avoid ‘mob law’ amid mass chants of 'Uruy Aikhal' in the Sakha language (Glory to Motherland!). ‘We are against illegal migration and crime, not some ethnic group or nationality,’ stressed Nikolayev. …

‘The case caused a sharp public response precisely because migrants … committed this brazen attack.’ … Mass checks are to be carried out on the legal status of migrants in Yakutia …

The public statement said: ‘The recent incident shook everyone in the Republic. ‘Crimes do not have nationality. ‘We call for you all not to act in a rash and not to succumb to provocations. ‘Please remain calm for the sake of peace and harmony in our common home Yakutia.’ … The Investigative Committee - in charge of probing serious crime - stressed that criminal actions ‘have no nationality’. Amid high tension it urged citizens to refrain from any actions that ‘may lead to ethnic conflicts’.

The main ethnic groups in Yakutia - also called the Sakha Republic - are around 50% Yakut and 38% Russian.
