AUGUSTA, Maine — Democratic Gov. Janet Mills on Friday signed into law a bill that eliminates religious and philosophical exemptions for vaccinations in Maine.

Maine has one of the highest rates of non-medical vaccine opt-outs in the nation, and health officials say that rates appear to be rising.

“As we hear more reports of measles and other preventable diseases in Maine and across the country, it has become clear that we must act to ensure the health of our communities,” said Rep. Ryan Tipping, D-Orono, the bill’s sponsor.

Maine will end non-medical vaccine opt-outs by 2021 for students at public and private schools and universities, including nursery school. Health care facility employees are also subject to the law.

Supporters say unvaccinated children put others at risk, especially those who cannot receive inoculations for medical reasons. But opponents of the legislation say it infringes on parental rights and stigmatizes children who remain unvaccinated.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced the first case of the measles in the state since 2017. The individual who contracted the disease had been vaccinated.

The state also is dealing with an outbreak of whooping cough, for which there is a vaccine.

Maine joins California, Mississippi and West Virginia to become the fourth state without religious exemptions for vaccine requirements.

Opponents warn that a legal fight is brewing over whether the Maine law goes too far in infringing on religious liberty. The Maine Constitution says “no person shall be hurt, molested or retrained” for following God according to his or her “own conscience.”

Mills is doing it to herself. My kids who are more liberal voted for her and now can't stand her. That sentiment is spreading. There is widespread opposition to her lockdown up here in CD2.

I did use the exemption in the past for my kids when they were younger who only have the very basic vaccinations.

When I try to engage in a discussion as to what, exactly, this governor has done that is great, I then get a speech that we need not talk politics at work. It occurs to me that the leftists have taken over our schools and much of our government. The answer may just be in the right taking over the position of the men with guns. Ultimately the leftists can only achieve their fascist upotia as long as men with guns are willing to enforce their vision. Leftists are violent and dangerous and must be treated as such.

I found a county by county breakout on Question 1 (the initiative to overturn the legislation).

Do you want to reject the new law that removes religious and philosophical exemptions to requiring immunization against certain communicable diseases for students to attend schools and colleges and for employees of nursery schools and health care facilities?

Not one county voted to overturn it. In fact, only three voted higher than 38% to do so. So those five counties aren't dictating policy on this particular issue - popular backing of the legislation won clear majorities in every county. It's as you often state: Freedom is not popular.

True enough, but look at the counties with the lowest repeal numbers.

My understanding is that ranked-choice doesn't apply to the governor's race … though it does apply to the primaries for that office (but ranked-choice wasn't needed for the GOP primary because Moody got 53% of the vote and a clear victory … the bottom line is that the GOP just didn't have a strong candidate, period). Mills won the governorship with a majority vote in any instance.

It doesn't matter if it's done via club, rock, gun or ballot - it's all mob rule.

We do have ranked choice for Governor. The Democrats made up ranked choice specifically to prevent splitting the vote ever again which is how LePage won.

If I recall correctly, this vote took place on a day where there was a contested Democrat primary, and no contested GOP primary. Turnout issues.
