MX-Border Sheriff solves border issues without govt money, with private landowners

    This is a great read:

    Excerpt:
Tired of Waiting for a Federal Fix, Border Sheriff Tackles Cartel Crime With Bold Action

BISBEE, Arizona—Tired of waiting for the federal government to fix the border, Sheriff Mark Dannels decided to take matters into his own hands. A personal run-in with a Mexican cartel only cemented his motivation to rid his county of cross-border crime.

Five years ago, Dannels’s son, Sierra Vista police officer Justin Dannels, fatally shot a man allegedly connected to the Sinaloa cartel when the man tried to run him over during a traffic stop.

The following day, Dannels and his son both received threatening phone calls from Mexico. Then cartel members showed up in the sheriff’s backyard at midnight.

“Hell of a scary. But, I’ll tell you, if you run from them, you’re no better than they are,” Dannels said on May 5.

“Long story short is, we really took a deep look at what we were doing here and that’s one of the reasons that we said, ‘You ain’t going to threaten us, and you’re not going to scare us out of what we need to do,’” he said. “That’s one of the reasons we’ve pushed forward.”

Instead of capitulating, Dannels doubled down on ridding his county of cartel activity and cross-border crime. Cochise County in southeast Arizona is now one of the most secure of the 31 counties along the southwest border. It is a rare success story amid an unprecedented border crisis that is overwhelming the system.

The major new effort started in January 2017 and the formula Dannels adopted is simple: Place hundreds of cameras to detect traffickers and smugglers, catch them, and prosecute them.

“We put our cameras in areas where Border Patrol wasn’t going,” he said. “We went to the river areas, we went into the mountain areas, we went to the desert areas. And this is based on intel from our ranchers and our community folks saying, ‘We have a problem on our property.’ We’ve gone to private lands and we put those cameras strategically in areas where it helps identify the smugglers.”

The sheriff’s border team, called SABRE (Southeastern Arizona Border Region Enforcement), run by Sgt. Tim Williams, has placed 400 trail cameras in the county so far—with an estimated 700 to be up and running by year’s end.

The money for the cameras was raised from private donations—Dannels refuses to accept government money, with strings attached, to expand the program.

    ----
He said his team will carry out the interdiction if it’s drug smuggling; however, they have to call in Border Patrol for human smuggling, as that’s a federal issue.

The overall catch rate has increased from about 16 percent to about 60 percent, and with 100 percent prosecution for drug smugglers, Dannels said the cartel has started moving its drug operations to avoid his county.

Well would you look at that. We can solve our problems without relying on the government.

So, we don't end the "War on Drugs".

Maybe someday Prohibition will make a come-back...

Well, as long as it is private funds on private land they are within their rights. Nevertheless, the root problem is NOT being addressed.

If all drugs were legalized and deregulated tomorrow, there would still be drug crime. The government has to exact its pound of flesh, and a free flow of drugs would be seen as a huge revenue stream to the government.

What is happening in Cochise county has very little to do with actual drugs, and more to do with the criminals who supply them. It’s like mafia activity in New York or Chicago. Regular citizens should be free to life their lives on their own property instead of being threatened by thugs.

Correction: What WAS happening in Cochise county, from what I gathered from the article it seems they have it near under control now.

Okay. Nitpick. The complaint in the post that prompted mine was that the WoD still continues.

Meh, it wasn't personal. I was just pointing out that these people have figured out how to "solve" the problem without much in the way of federal aid. There is no reason every border county couldn't do the same damn thing.

It was a government solution. Surveillance- even on private property (with permission from the owners it seems), track, arrest.

True it wasn't Federal government but still government.

It is an elected county official doing his job protecting private property with the help of donated money . Sounds more efficient than anything a federal agency could do.

Yep. Local government doing specifically what the local people want.

No matter how big the Federal budget gets, they won’t address the actual problem. Same with many leftist local governments. They will spend hundreds of millions on cronyism, but ask them to arrest a burglar at your home or the scumbag that broke your car window and stole your computer? Forget about it. Sorry, not enough money or resources for that.

The question is, are the people who complain about cartels while supporting prohibition stupid, or do they have ulterior motives?

....such as, using the cartels as an excuse to push a broader anti-immigrant agenda?

Both parties like cronyism. Cronies give them money to get re-elected. In return, they support programs which give profits to the crony.

Those illegal immigrant detention centers? They are mostly for- profit- and Trump is sending them lots of business. https://www.axios.com/private-prison...30852e66f.html

By the numbers: As of November 2017, 71% of detained immigrants were being held in private detention facilities, according to government data obtained by the National Immigrant Justice Center.

Since Trump became president, ICE has awarded more than $480 million in federal funds to GEO Group and more than $331 million to CoreCivic, according to USA Spending.

It's a similar situation to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when all levels of government began struggling to handle the surge in prison populations and turned to private prison companies to help, Brennan Center for Justice Program Director Inimai Chettiar told Axios.

The government is "rapidly increasing immigration detention, and outsourcing it to the private sector."

Between the lines: These privately run detention centers often hire fewer staff members, require less training of them or don't implement programming for detainees, Randy Capps, director of research for U.S. programs at the Migration Policy Institute, told Axios. Some have even been sued for imposing forced labor on immigrants.

"When you have kind of weak standards and you have a for-profit motive, you wind up with understaffing and you wind up with lack of services and activities," Capps said. "That's where you get to health problems, and you probably have mental health problems, too."

A spokesperson from CoreCivic, however, said this is not the case. They said detention centers are held to strict staffing standards by ICE and at least one of CoreCivic’s family facilities provides migrants amenities such as gyms, parks, a playroom and a library.

The other side: If private prisons did not hold immigrants, they would likely be sent to local jails, which often struggle to meet the federal government's detention standards, according to a GEO Group spokesperson. Private companies are also more able to adapt to seasonal trends of unauthorized immigration, adds a CoreCivic spokesperson.

And which would you prefer? Turn them around at the border, or put them into detention?

That's been clear for a long time.

Some won't see this as the good news that it is, but those same people will never notice anyway (it'll always be next month/year/ decade).

Thanks Zippy for correcting. Nothing irritates me more than seeing anarchists trying to claim credit for something clearly the government accomplished.

    3. The “invasion” that the government (see #1) promises to reward if they stand in line and document themselves with the Fed?
