Watchdog Report Finds Alarming 20 Percent of Baby Food Tested Contains Lead

    https://science.slashdot.org/story/1...-contains-lead

According to an analysis released Thursday by the nonprofit advocacy group, the Environmental Defense Fund, twenty percent of 2,164 baby foods sampled between 2003 and 2013 by the Food and Drug Administration tested positive for lead. Ars Technica reports:

Lead is a neurotoxin. Exposure at a young age can permanently affect a developing brain, causing lifelong behavioral problems and lower IQ. Though the levels in the baby food were generally below what the FDA considers unsafe, the agency's standards are decades old. The latest research suggests that there is no safe level of lead for children. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency this year has estimated that more than five percent of U.S. children (more than a million) get more than the FDA's recommended limit of lead from their diet. The products most often found to contain lead were fruit juices, root vegetable-based foods, and certain cookies, such as teething biscuits, the EDF reports. Oddly, the presence of lead was more common in baby foods than in the same foods marketed for adults. For instance, only 25 percent of regular apple juice tested positive for lead, while 55 percent of apple juices marketed for babies contained lead. Overall, only 14 percent of adult foods tested contained lead. The findings come from data collected in the FDA's annual survey of foods, called the Total Diet Survey, which the agency has run since the 1970s. Each year, the agency samples 280 types of foods from three different cities across the country, tracking nutrients, metals, pesticides, and other contaminants.

Dosage matters. How much lead was actually found? They don't say. "Detectable levels" can be as small as one part per trillion. The do indicate that they considered four parts per billion as "found". Four parts per billion is 0.004 micrograms per gram. FDA allows six micrograms per day for children. If a food has .004 micrograms per gram, you would need 1500 grams or over three pounds of that baby food a day to get to that level.

The point of the article was that the dosage levels are wrong and that it is preferable not to have any detectable levels of lead for babies, which is not totally unreasonable since 74% of the samples tested did not have any detectable amounts of lead.

What was most surprising was that when compared to adult food, baby food contained lead almost twice as often in the adult samples.

That doesn't mean the baby food that has lead is definitely harming all babies, it could be some or few or none. But if there is concern about it and most of the food is lead free, why not go with the lead free food for your baby? I mean, if you had a baby and there was leaded and unleaded baby food, and the unleaded baby food was five cents a jar more expensive, wouldn't you buy it?

Exactly and you know what your child is eating.

Lead is naturally occurring so can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables too- including organic ones.

They don't tell you which ones or how much lead they have so you can't know which makes it kinda worthless as far as consumers are concerned. Unless you decide to avoid all baby foods for your kids.

. Overall, 20% of 2,164 baby food samples and 14% of the
other 10,064 food samples had detectable levels of lead.
(again noting that "detectable levels" are not necessarily harmful or dangerous levels).

One of prop 65’s quirks is that its legal definition of safe limits for substances like arsenic and lead are well below what nature has been providing for thousands of years. Carrots and yams both exceed the legal limit of arsenic by more than 20 times, but of course they aren’t dangerous because of nature’s way of bonding ions and elements.

Earthpaste is one of many completely natural products that contains lead — though much less than the amount defined as safe by Proposition 65. Here are some interesting comparisons that show the amount of lead in some of these natural products.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tells us lead occurs naturally, in uncontaminated soils, at a level of between 50 and 400 parts per million (ppm) — it’s part of what makes earth what it is. As a comparison Redmond Clay naturally has around 12 ppm — a fraction of the typical amount in “uncontaminated soils”.

Of course we can also compare lead levels in our food supply. In 2007, the FDA conducted a study to determine the amount of lead in typical foods and establish safe levels. Here is what they found in typical servings.

Fresh collard greens may contain up to 30 micrograms of lead (50x higher than prop 65 stipulates)
Dry roasted mix nuts may contain up to 20 mcg of lead
Brussels sprouts may contain up to 15 mcg of lead
Sweet potatoes may contain up to 16 mcg of lead
Spinach may contain up to 15 mcg of lead
In each use of Earthpaste, you would expect up to 6 mcg of lead — five times less than in collard greens. Which of course doesn’t mean we should avoid collard greens! As it turns out, nature has given us ways to avoiding damage from naturally-occurring lead.
    Or become a breatharian.

Organic Foods Higher In Lead and Heavy Metals https://getiqed.com/blogs/food-for-t...d-heavy-metals

in 2007, researchers conducted an analysis of wheat grown on various farms in Belgium; based on the results, they estimate that consumers of organically grown wheat take in more than twice as much lead, slightly more cadmium, and nearly equivalent levels of mercury as consumers of wheat grown on conventional farms.
Heavy metals are now being found in USDA certified organic foods, superfoods, vitamins, herbs and dietary supplements at alarming levels. Neither the USDA nor the FDA has set any limits on heavy metals in foods and organic foods
