Lawmakers headed to the White House for meeting with Trump

Very interesting... Most of those attending want to reform FISA

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), along with several GOP lawmakers, will meet with President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr Tuesday afternoon amid controversy over expiring surveillance authorities, according to people familiar with the matter.

The White House meeting comes as Barr is pushing for a clean extension of the surveillance laws that will expire March 15. The deadline has exposed a rift within the Republican party: Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who will also attend the meeting, both want to see reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Paul told reporters last week that Trump told him he does not support a clean extension of the expiring provisions. Paul wants to amend the law to prevent FISA from targeting Americans.

In addition to McConnell, McCarthy, Lee and Paul, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), and House Judiciary Committee ranking member Doug Collins (R-Ga.) will attend the meeting, according to a senior administration official.

Barr is typical of the mindset of most prosecuting attorneys. To them, it's the job of congress to make laws, and the judicial branch's job to decide if the laws are unconstitutional. Barr seems to forget that he took an oath of office to uphold the constitution. This oath doesn't mean that he should follow the Supreme Court's interpretation of the law. It means that he must make his own judgement on whether the laws he's been tasked to enforce are constitutional. And if he believes they are unconstitutional, then he must not enforce those laws.

Paul, Lee, Meadows, Jordan, Nunes and Collins have all been saying they want to 'reform' FISA. Paul specifically says his amendment would stop spying on Americans.

Rand and Lee better make some convincing arguments as to why there needs to be reforms.

“The reforms that I will put forward, I’ll present to the president this afternoon, I’ve already discussed with him — that FISA warrants shouldn’t be issued against Americans,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) told reporters. “And any information gathered in a FISA court shouldn’t be used against Americans.”

This is why it's good for Rand to befriend Trump.
