Exclamation SouthWest flight suffers catastrophic engine failure enroute to NYC

1 dead after Southwest airplane with 148 aboard makes emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport

    http://www.philly.com/philly/news/ai...-20180417.html

    Updated: April 17, 2018 — 3:51 PM EDT

A passenger died Tuesday after a Southwest Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport when its engine exploded on a flight from New York to Dallas, authorities said.

Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Review Board, confirmed the fatality but declined to give details.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel also declined to offer details on that person’s injuries, saying only that the person had been hospitalized in critical condition after landing. Thiel said seven other people aboard were treated at the airport for minor injuries.

    Here’s what we know:

143 passengers and five crew members were on board flight 1380, according to Southwest.
Passenger accounts on social media said a woman was injured by debris that pierced the aircraft’s body after the engine exploded. Officials declined to provide specifics on the person who died.
Seven other people were treated at the airport for minor injuries, Thiel said at an afternoon news conference.
According to Flightaware.com, the jet was approaching Central Pennsylvania when it diverted to Philadelphia International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane landed around 11:20 a.m.
The plane is a Boeing 737-700 that went into service in 2000. It had no reported engine difficulties since 2000, according to a search of an FAA database.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to investigate the incident.

I have a lot more respect for 737s now. I still don't have any fond memories of flying on one, but they're apparently pretty tough.

As a general rule, the windows in line with the front of the engine nacelle are usually blocked off, just for this reason.

Looks like the broken window was closer to the rear edge of the wing.

    Here's the pilot:

Tammie Jo Shults, a former Navy fighter pilot and one of the first women to fly an F-18, quickly brought the Dallas-bound Southwest Flight 1380 to land at Philadelphia International at 11.30am after the explosion at 32,000ft.

Not even comparable. Ever 9 months at my company we are training in single engine work. And many times I will be doing it every 90 days.

Was going to say the same thing.

One of the very first skills taught in multi engine training of any type of aircraft is how to deal with a loss of engine situation.

That said, the flight crew had to deal with an explosive decompression, a fatal heart attack victim, other injuries and I'm sure some control issues based on the damage done.

So yeah, good job all around.

If you lose all control surfaces and only have one wing engine, do you just fly in circles?

Is that DC-10 failure (Sioux City almost landing) used as a lesson in improvisation? That was a fairly impressive effort given the damage to the plane.

According to Albuquerque's KOAT-TV, the woman who was sucked out of the window of flight 1380 has been identified as Jennifer Riordan, 43, of Albuquerque. Riordan, a married mother of two, was vice president for community relations at Wells Fargo, and served on the Annunciation Catholic School advisory council.

Good question.. a few engines have grenade'd lately.

High speed rotation on the compressor,, fatigue from age,, or impact ..
i do wonder if some are pushed past their safe limits. but that is always a question..
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

A little sensational wording, "sucked out of window". She remained on the aircraft, fitting through those window openings would be difficult unless a bigger opening than just the window was damaged.

Shults was one of the first female fighter pilots in the US Navy and first to fly an F-18. She later became an instructor, as the Navy did not allow women to fly in combat, and she finally resigned in 1993 when she joined Southwest Airlines.

She is a devout Christian who said previously in a blog that sitting in the cockpit gives her 'the opportunity to witness for Christ on almost every flight.'
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...assengers.html
God was her co-pilot, no doubt.

Agreed. I haven't flown in decades but I was always that one person actually paying attention. But maybe they should also design the cups differently.

Being able to land with 1 engine out is standard training. Every multi engine pilot must be able to do it. And in most cases it isn't really that difficult (assuming no other damage).

Making a split second decision to ditch a multi engine aircraft in a river with both engines out and doing it successfully with virtually zero injuries is something that almost no pilot trains for which is why there was such a big deal over it.

That being said, the way she handled this situation appears to have been of the highest quality airmanship and yes she deserves to be recognized for it.

IIRC Airbus flat out said it could not be done, what he did, a ditching like that.

They were trying to claim that the engines were not damaged or not damaged as badly as Sully was saying, and that he could have made Teteboro without ditching.

It took the engine telemetry from the FDRs to confirm what Sully said happened.
