    2020 Election Day Thread

    I voted in person today in Georgia. My precinct is heavily Republican, and so far today the line has been a lot longer than 2016. What's everyone else's experience?

    I voted a week ago for Jo Jorgenson. The line around the library was super long but I got in and out in 30 minutes. Note that I didn't see any Biden or Trump signs at that polling location but I did see a Jo Jorgenson sign!

    Election Day kicked off with a bout of chaos in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with poll watchers reportedly denied access and witnesses alleging “illegal campaigning” at various polling locations.

    According to Trump 2020 EDO director Mike Roman, Democrat election officials are banning Trump poll watchers all across the city, as one video shows. Another photo on social media shows a physical barrier, which Roman says Democrat officials are using to keep poll watchers far from the counting tables:

    There also appear to be instances of illegal campaigning at various polling locations. Roman provided an image of a man in blue purportedly distributing Democrat literature to voters as they stand in line to cast their ballots. Other polling locations appear to have the literature posted outside the facility:

    Additionally, there are mounting reports of polling locations opening late, forcing some voters to step out of line to return to work before casting their ballots:

    Any way, my SO went this morning at a large precinct in swing state NC, Charlotte, which is pretty solidly D. She said it was quiet and was in-and-out, even with new voting procedures and new machines. The Dems outreach to get people to vote early in some form seems to have worked.

    If that's indeed the case everywhere then Trump wins. I don't think they have a big enough margin in early voting if most of them have already voted.

    The line at my polling station here in Southwestern Pennsylvania was long this morning. I arrived at 6:40. The polls opened at 7. I was probably 40 or 50 deep at that point. By the time we started moving into the old Presbyterian church at 7 am, the line had roughly tripled, by my estimate, to around 150 people.

    As I stood in line, I noticed a placard on the side of the building that stated that the church had been established in 1775. That is rather old for this area. Not as old as some places in New England, I'm sure. But old, nonetheless. I'm an historian by hobby, and I couldn't help thinking back to the people who had inhabited this area back then, many of whom probably would end up fighting in the Revolution that was about to kick off less than a year later from the date on the side of the building. Many of them were probably buried there in the cemetery on the other side of the sidewalk I was standing on. The thought occurred to me in that moment that maybe they're the lucky ones - those who had already come and gone, and particularly those who'd lived in that momentous time when, for all the shortcomings we accuse them of today, with our haughtiness and our presumptions hundreds of years in their future, men (to borrow a term from their time that meant something different than it does now) stood up and fought for a truly new and beautiful principle - that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

    I wasn't proud to vote today. I didn't think I was doing their memory justice. I wasn't standing up to overthrow a millennia-old order of society. I voted today to stem a rising tide. That's all.

    No matter who "wins" this election, unlike the people buried there in that cemetery, we all lose.

    I voted yesterday. No line, no wait. But I’ve never see much of a line at a poll (in California). The fact that people have to wait in long lines is insane.

    Maybe. It was also not during peak voting hours, though. I usually do poll working on election day for local candidates I like (not this time bc of mask and distancing nonsense makes poll working nearly impossible) and that particular precinct gets a steady stream all day but a big early rush, decent lunch time turnout and heavy after-work rush. She went outside of those hours so I'm not sure it's evidence of anything.

    Voted this morning with my dad at 10 am and voted for Rainwater. We were going to vote yesterday, but apparently the early voting in my area ended at noon and we got there at 1 pm.

    Line for me in Michigan was wrapped around the building (big building too), but my precinct line went quickly. I voted and voted real hard.
