The key is enjoying the time you two have left. You instinctively want to prepare yourself for the loss. And, in self-defense, you probably should. But she's free to concentrate on living to the utmost. And if you don't help her do that, you'll regret the lost opportunity later.

Ever hear the phrase, 'Every day is a gift'? Time to take that one to heart. Don't waste her precious time grieving over something that hasn't happened yet.

I'm not saying the situation doesn't suck. I'm just sayin'...

Thanks man. That's good advice. Since losing my mom back in March we've actually been following it anyway, so it's just a matter of keeping the trend going. Jun 2nd will be our 40th anniversary. I plan to celebrate like never before.

Well, now that the initial shock has worn off a little...

A little over two years ago my wife Patty was diagnosed as having 4 tumors in her brain. Three of them were very small and could be handled with targeted radiation, which is what they did. Those remain "stable" and they're not concerned with them at present.

The fourth was too large to treat with just radiation. Fortunately it was in a spot where surgery wasn't overly complicated, and they removed most of it over Thanksgiving two years ago. Later they hit the remaining with targeted radiation, hoping to eliminate it that way.

Her scan three months ago showed some "swelling" which in retrospect was probably the tumor returning. At the time Patty wasn't showing any symptoms and was very positive (as always) so they took a wait and see approach. Well, her latest scan revealed that the tumor has returned with a vengeance. It's approximately 9 times the size of the one they removed 2 years ago, and has the added complication of having developed a cyst, making surgery more challenging. The scan also showed slight hemorrhaging, but they weren't overly concerned about that.

They gave her some meds to reduce that swelling and inflammation and sent her home for now. Her surgery is scheduled for Jan 3. As long as she doesn't get worse she'll be home for Christmas and new years.

Because of the cyst and the fact that the tumor is larger and goes deeper into the brain, surgery this time will be more complicated and entail a bit greater risk of complications. She already suffered significant field of vision reduction from the first time. That could get worse this time along with many other potential adverse effects. Naturally, I'm worried sick.

She had briefly considered not getting the surgery because of the potential problems, but that amounts to a death sentence and the tumor would start causing the same kinds of problems within weeks anyway, so she ultimately decided to undergo the proceedure.

That's where things stand atm. Thanks to all for your prayers and well wishes. Just typing this $#@! up makes me ill.

    This is heavy.

I wish you and yours well.

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

Well, she did beat the lung cancer five years ago, and did well after the brain surgery two years ago, so if anyone can pull through this she can. I still get sick thinking about it.

    Thanks.

Hang in there, bro. Just take each day one at a time and look for the positivity in each minute. You've got a tough road ahead (and behind) but you'll get through it.
