Republican Sen. Rand Paul wins 3rd term in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a libertarian-leaning conservative and former presidential candidate, won a third term Tuesday by defeating a rival from the other end of the political spectrum, progressive Democrat Charles Booker.

First elected in the tea party-driven wave of 2010, Paul’s victory extended a long GOP winning streak in Kentucky Senate races. The Bluegrass State hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since Wendell Ford in 1992.

Booker was the first Black Kentuckian to run as the state’s Democratic nominee for the Senate, but his trailblazing campaign came up short against Paul. It was Booker’s second bid for the Senate. In 2020, he barely lost the Democratic Senate primary to an establishment-backed rival routed that year by Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell in the general election.

Paul has gained a national voice in promoting limited government and restraint in U.S. foreign policy. One of the Senate’s most contrarian voices, he also denounced what he views as government overreach in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a dozen years as senator, Paul has regularly gone his own way, even putting himself at odds with his own party. The outspoken conservative has railed repeatedly against socialism, foreign aid and what he sees as excessive spending that he blames for driving up the nation’s debt.

We all expected to wake up Wednesday morning and deal with the election deniers who — like the Confederacy — continue to fight wars they had already lost.

We didn’t know who those election deniers would be — possibly Kari Lake, the Republican running for governor of Arizona, or maybe Paul Laxalt, who was running for the Senate in New Mexico, depending on whether they lost — but we didn’t have a clue that would be Kentucky’s own Charles Booker.

With just about all the precincts counted, Booker trailed U.S. Sen. Rand Paul by about 67 bazillion votes.

Yet because he believed the Associated Press called the race too early, he bull-headedly refused to say the words we expect all losing candidates to say — “I lost.”

“Their assessment is based on the premise that a Black man can’t get support in rural areas,” Booker told the people assembled for his “victory” celebration.

No objection to what Gerth is saying about conceding, but do you ever look at a news article and think, "Something's not right there?". Gerth is the chief political reporter for the Courier Journal and ought to have gotten his facts on Laxalt right. Laxalt is running for Senator in Nevada, not New Mexico. What's more, it's Adam Laxalt that's running, not his grandfather, Paul Laxalt, who had previously served as governor of Nevada. Maybe Gerth's memory is failing and he's resurrecting faded memories of a former Senator from New Mexico, Pete Domenici, who fathered Adam Laxalt through an extramarital affair.

And I'm reading now that Adam Laxalt has lost his race, so we should be hearing his concession soon.

Honestly surprised he ran again. When he ran the first time he privately told people he only wanted to do 2 terms. Glad he did though, because despite his flaws, finding someone as good as him to replace him, would have been nearly impossible (unless it was Thomas, who is better than Rand).

Well if Massie wanted Rand's seat, we'd have to find someone good enough to take Massie's seat in Congress.
