Barbara Bush, who was our Nation’s First lady from 1989 to 1993, is featured on the coins’ obverse. The detailed portrait is by designer Benjamin Sowards. During her time in the White House, Mrs. Bush was known for her friendly, direct manner and her warmth.

Literacy became Mrs. Bush’s special cause long before her husband became President. She continued to champion the cause as First Lady, calling literacy in America the “most important issue we have.” Her passion for the cause is the inspiration for the coins’ reverse design.
