ANDERSON CO., SC (WSPA) - Deputies are looking for the person or persons responsible for vandalizing a church in Anderson County.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office says someone broke windows and spray painted messages on the side of Midway Presbyterian Church on Midway Road.

According to deputies, the windows in the church were over 125 years old.

The words "SUBMIT TO GOD THRU ISLAM" and "MUHAMMED IS HIS PROPHET" were spray pained in black onto the siding of the church.

Elders of the church tell 7News they did not let the act of vandals disturb their services and lunch on Sunday.

"It was very disturbing because we feel like this was an individual act and we don't hold any religious group responsible for it," said Bob Harrell. "We think it most likely was some misguided young people. However, we do take it very seriously and we'll do everything we can to assist law enforcement."

On Tuesday, Anderson Area Crime Stoppers said they are offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the vandalism. The church has also offered a matching rewards, bring the total reward amount to $1,000.

Anderson Area Crime Stoppers are also collecting donations to help the church with the cost of replacing the stained-glass windows.

According to the news release, donations can be sent to Anderson Area Crime Stoppers, P.O. Box 219, Anderson, SC 29622, and if you donate, please indicate "church windows" on the donation.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or the Anderson County Sheriff's Office at 864-260-4400.

Theres a large church in the subdivision where I live right by the entrance. I could literally do this and the police would be right in thinking misguided young people were responsible.

Notre Dame is a much more significant incident.

That's like complaining that the national media talked about the flooding on the Missouri river system but didn't say a word when several creeks in my area overflowed.

I just posted what was being said in media. My own view on ND is posted here, I can support some level of globalism on helping with relief efforts in places outside America and offering moral support to others in their hour of need.

But for the sake of argument, Black Americans in America can expect from an America-First POTUS to speak on damages to both Black Churches in America and a famous Foreign Church abroad considering that he has shown ability to fire off 30 different tweets over a weekend when something affects him emotionally. You probably have better understnding of America-First vs Globalism intricacies, just a quick retort to argue for the sake of arguing.

Trump can't be expected to tweet about every local crime in America and there is no way to know if he even knew about the Black churches, the media did an excellent job of making everyone aware of the Notre Dame fire on the other hand and it is much more significant.

In a different but more serious series of church attacks: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/...-arrested.html

White Deputy’s Son Arrested for Black Church Arsons in Louisiana

Three black churches were intentionally set ablaze in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, over the course of ten days in late March and early April. Police on Wednesday arrested a suspect: Holden Matthews, a 21-year-old white man and the son of a local sheriff’s deputy. Whether racism motivated the arsons remains to be determined, but the possibility has gripped black residents in a state of fear, according to reports.

The attacks marked the latest in a string of such incidents across the Southern United States going back decades. Perhaps the most infamous was the Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Four young girls were killed. Dylann Roof’s murder of nine black parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston in South Carolina in 2015 was similarly bookended by an arson of the same church, which was co-founded by slave-revolt leader Denmark Vesey, by vengeful whites in 1822. And the week after Roof’s attack saw several more black churches burned down, including at least three — in Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina — that were ruled arsons but did not result in arrests.

The Louisiana fires allegedly set by Matthews consumed the St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre on March 26, and the Greater Union and Mount Pleasant Baptist Churches, both in Opelousas, on April 2 and April 4 respectively. Black churches have been targeted for racist violence throughout history because they were seen as sites where black community was built and resistance to white supremacy was fomented. “Across the diaspora, black spiritual and religious spaces — whether a clearing in the woods or a stone and mortar church — have nurtured rebellion, and that’s why they continue to be under siege,” J.T. Roane, an assistant professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Cincinnati who studies religion and black communities, said in 2015.

Speculation surrounding Matthews’s motives has ranged from the logical — racist violence — to the hysterical, as with CNN’s report that he may have been influenced by “black metal” music. Whatever the impetus, the 21-year-old is charged with three counts of arson of a religious building, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. Nobody was physically harmed in the fires. And despite the emotional toll, parishioners wasted no time returning to worship. “[They] didn’t destroy the church, they destroyed the building,” Reverend Gerald Touissant of Mount Pleasant Baptist told local KATC.com. According to the outlet, members of the two Opelousas congregations worshipped with other local churches on the first Sunday after their chapels burned down. “It steals something from you, it robs you but then … right now is the time to find something to pick them up,” added Touissant.

Black Christian faith has never been cowed by such attacks, but that has not diminished their threat. HuffPost in 2015 estimated that, since 1956, more than 90 black American churches have been targeted for bombings, arsons, or vandalism meant to intimidate their congregants and broader communities. Nor were these assaults limited to the Jim Crow era, when black political organizing — often based in Southern black churches — threatened for the first time in decades to upend the racist status quo. Dozens occurred in the 1990s. At least ten have occurred since 2004. Echoes of Roof’s attack in 2015 reverberated into 2018, when Gregory Bush, who is charged with shooting and killing two black seniors at a Louisville, Kentucky supermarket, began his attack by attempting to break into a black church nearby. The doors were locked, fortunately for the congregants. A witness saw Bush yanking at them aggressively, trying to enter. He soon moved on and killed elsewhere. The security measures may have worked in this instance, but as has been demonstrated, safety for black churches remains as precarious as it is for black people.

Painting is very low on the wall so "artist" is probably short- so excellent chance it is just a kid or kids. "Muhammed" is misspelled (should be an "a" not an "e") and God would be "Allah".

Possibly. Another supposedly Islamic terror attack in Anderson from 2018 was a white male.

Man pleads guilty to placing bombs, other devices in Anderson Co.

ANDERSON, SC (WSPA) - An Anderson County man has pleaded guilty to using weapons of mass destruction in federal court, Monday.

27-year-old Wesley Dallas Ayers admitted to making three bombs and placing them in various parts of Anderson County between January 24 and February 24.

Ayers was arrested at his home on Travis Road on March 3 and was indicted on several federal charges in April.

One of those devices exploded on January 30, injuring a man at the corner of Travis Road and Martin Road.

The other two bombs were found by law enforcement and rendered safe.

Ayers also placed three hoax devices which resembled explosives but did not contain any blasting agent. Some of those devices included threatening messages.

According to court documents, one of the devices included typed pages saying the January 30th incident was only the start and that the community would continue to receive these gifts until the Islamic State flag would fly high. It also includes phrases like "War has been declared" and "Tuesday was just a practice round."

Ayers was arrested after a month-long investigation which included the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and the ATF, among others.

Ayers also pleaded guilty to possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime and use of an explosive device during the commission of a felony.

Ayers faces a mandatory sentence of at least 20 years in federal prison up to life in prison in addition to a fine of $250,000 and up to 3 years of court-ordered supervision.
