A soldier just got authorization to wear a beard because of his Norse pagan faith

They didn't have this choice back in my day when I was 18, in the Navy, and a Norse pagan.

When the Army authorized beards for religious soldiers in early 2017, the move was a response to years of requests — and a lawsuit — from Sikh soldiers seeking to both serve and adhere to the tenets of their faith.

But the directive, technically, applied to all religions.

And that includes Norse pagans, also known as heathens, according to an undated memo from the 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

“I grant your accommodation, subject to the standards and limitations described below,” commander Col. Curtis Shroeder wrote to a 795th Military Police Battalion soldier, whose name is redacted from a copy of the memo circulating on Facebook.

“In observance of your Heathen; Norse Pagan faith, you may wear a beard, in accordance with Army uniform and grooming standards for soldiers with approved religious accommodations.”
Hell, you can even get a Thor's hammer on your gravemarker...

What does @Danke have to say about it?

Military rules should be based on practical concerns, joining the military isn't a right and there are reasons for the beard ban.

It depends on other factors but they are less so than others because America was and is a Christian nation.

Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

The reason for the beard ban was to have a uniform appearance. Much of it centered on the Vietnam war and the fact that sailors grooming standards were, by tradition, lax, by common standards. I don't know if you have served but I was in the Navy when the "beard ban" came into effect. It started two years before I joined. CNO Hayward directed that no one under the rank of PO3 could wear one. The razor fell one year after my enlistment under CNO Watkins in '84. No more beards. I witnessed guys with 18 yrs. service, 2 to retirement, say "$#@! you" and leave. The myth about gas mask seals were bull$#@!. If anyone was gonna die in the fleet it would be by nuclear evaporation.

I will defer to your knowledge on the subject.

    On Trump:
How conservative Republicans can continue to support this arrogant imposter—the man who brags about inflicting the world with the Covid mark of the beast; the man who said, “Take the guns first, go through due process second”; and the man who deliberately played and then set up Stewart Rhodes (of course, Stewart was all too eager to be Trump’s patsy) for an 18-year prison sentence—is truly beyond my comprehension.” Chuck Baldwin

Yeah, beard ban didn't come in until the early '80s.
