Banning the nets in California won’t stop demand for swordfish, he said. The fish now will come from other countries with fewer rules.
This is the old order, where it's not a good day unless something is being banned, and independent people are being forced on the government dole and what we need gets outsourced to god knows where.

Say what you want about Trump, but this is the kind of thing that I would not likely see happening at federal level under his administration.

    And that's a good thing.

Because of their impact on marine life, drift gill nets have been banned in other countries and states.

California is the last West Coast state to allow drift gill nets. Voters banned their use in state waters out to three miles offshore in 1990, but they remain legal beyond that in federal waters. Many other states already have banned them, including Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii.
There are 20 commercial drift net boats left in California — down from 129 boats in 1994. Supporters of the industry note that federal and state rules, along with industry practices, have reduced the amount of bycatch by using nets with larger mesh openings 14 inches wide, placing electronic devices that send out pinging sounds to scare away dolphins, and other measures.

The west coast is three states. So that is technically true, but not very meaningful. At least in the way you are trying to pay-troll here.

Also, governments don't "allow" or "permit" anything. Governments can only restrict.

They could be used in both, at least up to now.

Now they are restricted to federal waters only.

Ah , I see so now they have to burn more fuel to go further out . Makes no sense to me because from what I have seen there is more of what they are pretending to try and protect out there than further in .

We'll all be living in caves after everything is outlawed, but then you can be sure that living in caves will soon be banned in order to protect endangered bats.

There was a time when Americans believed in freedom.

The US is dying from a million cuts. Part of the reason the USA is a nanny police state now is that whenever there is a problem, the kneejerk reaction in the US is to call for a new law.

Nanny state laws are not the best solution, however. Nanny state laws lead to more laws, higher fines, and tougher sentences. Thirty-five years ago, DWI laws were enacted that led to DWI checkpoints and lower DWI levels. Seatbelt laws led to backseat seatbelt laws, childseat laws, and pet seatbelt laws. Car liability insurance laws led to health insurance laws and gun liability laws. Smoking laws that banned smoking in buildings led to laws against smoking in parks and then bans against smoking in entire cities. Sex offender registration laws led to sex offender restriction laws and violent offender registration laws.

Nanny state laws don't make us safer, either. Nanny state laws lead people to be careless since they don't need to have personal responsibility anymore. People don't need to be careful crossing the street now because drunk-driving has been outlawed and driving while using a mobile phone is illegal. People don't investigate companies or carry out due diligence because businesses must have business licenses now.

The main point of nanny state laws is not safety. The main purposes of more laws are control and revenue generation for the state.

Another reason laws are enacted is because corporations give donations to lawmakers to stifle competition or increase sales.

Many laws are contradictory, too. Some laws say watering lawns is required, while other laws say watering lawns is illegal.

Many nanny state laws that aim to solve a problem can be fixed by using existing laws. If assault is already illegal, why do we need a new law that outlaws hitting umpires?

Do laws even work? Heroin is illegal, but do people still use heroin?

Nanny state laws are not even necessary. If everything was legal would you steal, murder, and use crack cocaine? Aren't there other ways to solve problems besides calling the police? Couldn't people educate or talk to people who bother them? Can't people boycott businesses they hate? Couldn't people be sued for annoying behavior? Couldn't people just move away? Even if assault was legal, wouldn't attackers risk being killed or injured, too? Do people have consciences? Having no laws doesn't mean actions have no consequences.

If there is no victim, there is no crime.

We don't need thousands of laws when we only need 10.

Should swimming pools be banned because they are dangerous? Hammers? Bottles? Rocks? Energy drinks? Pillows?

    Where does it end?

If one state can have self-serve gas stations, why can't every state have them? If sodas were legal 20 years ago, why can't they be legal now?

Freedom is not just a one way street. You can only have freedom for yourself if you allow others to have it.

Control freaks might get angry when a neighbor owns three indoor cats, but what did the neighbor take from them? Why should this be illegal? Is outlawing cats something a free country should do? Doesn't banning everything sound like the opposite of liberty?

Instead of getting mad at people who like freedom, why don't people realize that freedom is a two way street?

If you allow others to paint their house purple then you can, too.

If you allow others to own a gun then you can, too.

If you allow others to swear then you can, too.

If you allow others to gamble then you can, too.

Good men don't need laws. Bad men won't obey laws.

Who wants to live in a prison?

    Think. Question everything.

When a few bad actors can actually drastically hurt an entire ecosystem the solutions become difficult. Typical contract law doesn't apply in these cases in how things are currently set up. If somehow we allow the sale of fishing rights per acre of ocean, in a contractually enforceable position, sold in a fair manner and not increasing corporatism, then perhaps we could stop people harvesting only shark fins, or overfishing, or all the other horror stories of improper resource management.

I'm not sure the best middle ground from the existing system to the ideal system. Give states the right to manage federal waters? What about open ocean, like should we allow anarchy on the open waters... allow greenpeace to ram the "scientific whaling ships" that japan sends out?

Government laws lead to more crime. If only murder and theft were illegal, obeying the law would be easy, but no one respects the law when everything is illegal.

Most of the problems of today would be solved by embracing what worked in the past.

People were born in the past without birth certificates.

    People could travel without passports.

People can learn how to drive without driver licenses.

Business that don’t have business licenses will go bankrupt if they provide bad service.

People won’t starve if they don’t have food stamps.

People can find cheap doctors in the world without Obamacare.

People won’t have a vested interest in driving dangerously if there are no liability insurance laws.

Would crime rise if everything was legal?

Why do you need the government? Can’t you talk to people who bother you? Could you sue someone? Could you just move away?

    Think.

A free country that went to war with a evil dictatorship should not become a police state. Thieves cannot take the moral high ground and criticize robbers.

The USA is an immoral bankrupt warmongering police state now.

Americans have learned nothing from history.

Americans have no rights anymore and the US is no longer a democracy.

Americans think every problem should be solved by decree and force now, but every solution causes another problem.

Americans think the government is made up of holy men. Americans think anyone becomes a saint when they wear a costume, badge, and a gun.

The solution for problems should be what worked in the past.

Americans say that rent control should be used to reduce high rents instead of reducing regulations.

When regulations lead to a bad economy, Americans think that the homeless to should be put in jail and businesses should be given bailouts.

Instead of allowing people to feed the homeless, Americans think feeding the homeless should be outlawed.

Instead of getting rid of welfare that encourages girls to marry the state instead of a man and leads to broken families, Americans think food stamps should be expanded.

Instead of getting rid of minimum wages that cripple the ability of the USA to compete on the world market, Americans think the US should increase the minimum wage and start a trade war by enacting tariffs.

When food stamps lead to increased debt, Americans think that taxes should be raised.

Americans think the only way to attend college is to have student loans, but student loans raise the cost of tuition.

Instead of ending wars that lead to terrorism, tyranny, debt, and refugees, Americans think that the wars should be increased.

China used to encourage people to have kids, but after China became overpopulated, China had an one-child policy.

The USA is supposed to be a free country. The reason the Americans fought the British was because Americans wanted to be free.

When our overlords make a decree, they always sell it as a minor temporary law that only affects Muslims, junkies, sex offenders, homosexuals, illegal immigrants, or blacks. The 1% doesn’t mention that the law will become permanent and more draconian.

No one cares if owning cows are illegal, yoga pants are illegal, teen driving is illegal, or smoking is illegal. The problem is what happens when your job is banned, the government steals your house, tortures your family, or sends you to the concentration camps.

Are you just going to take it?

The elites are trying today to make Americans dependent children by outlawing everything and giving them food stamps. Once Americans are weakened and the US Ponzi economy implodes, the ruling class will then send the 99% off to the gulags to be starved and killed.

Governments are not kind. Governments have killed millions of people in Nazi concentration camps, Soviet gulags, the Chinese Great Leap Forward, and the Cambodian killing fields.

Liberty is not something that only benefits other people, but not you. Freedom benefits everyone.

Tyranny is not something that only punishes other people, but not you. Tyranny punishes everyone.

    Freedom is good.

    Tyranny is bad.

    This is no joke.

History repeats and the signs are everywhere.

Anyone who supports the government is just a tool of the elites.

    Wake up.

The US is a police state now. Americans should be out in the streets with pitchforks and torches, but instead they would rather shut up, cover their ears, and put their heads in the sand.

So' the price of fish goes up, California collects more revenue in taxes for 'prepared food' in
    restaurants.
They're not protecting anything really, just bringing in more tax and burdening the environment
with tons of extra exhaust fumes needed to get to fishing grounds.
Notice I didn't say CO2 I'm sure Ca is all over that , they'll be passing out
inhalers soon, so they can tax breathing 'directly'.
