Hackers Steal 160,000 Health Records From UC Berkeley Database
Think about this for a second, who the heck would have the motive to steal 160,000 health records? Does the word "insurance companies" come to mind. Many of their stocks have been declining. Perhaps they want to know who to insure (and who not to insure)? Maybe they hired hackers to do this? Ask yourself, why would anyone else want to steal these record? Notice that they stole them from a school with students who tend to be well off (and have well off families). Why not steal them from a school with students who have less money? Perhaps because well off students (and families) are more likely to get health insurance? It would be interesting to know the percentage of students at UC Berkley that get health insurance (vs other schools). I'm not saying insurance companies were behind it, just that this is something we should consider the possibility of and it's at least good reason why we shouldn't want our health records stolen.
To say that these insurance companies are too ethical to do something like this or that they wouldn't want to risk getting caught is certainly nonsense (the FDA and Bayer got away with selling Aids tainted blood overseas and there were virtually no consequences for either of them. There is very little accountability for the rich and the powerful in this country even when they do get caught. Merck hid data about Vioxx and they are still rich and powerful. Did anyone go to jail for that? No. The people who conducted that fraud are still rich and about with very few to no consequences. The list of this complete lack of accountability goes on and on). This notion that such a conspiracy is impossible and that these corporations are too ethical and too risk aversive to do something like that (as if consequences exist in this country for those who commit such crime) is just nonsense that our media and culture has brainwashed us to believe.
