You know the US has become insane today when:

The answer to endless wars is more wars.

The answer to the police state is more tyranny.

The answer to a dead economy is starting a trade war.

The answer to regulations is more laws.

The answer to endless debt is more debt.

Twenty something Salon "investigative journalist" decides not to mention that Carter did the same thing for farmers when the Soviet grain embargo affected the world market. He actually spent more money on the ag payments. Both parties supported then but now such behavior is unprecedented (as in didn't occur/wasn't taught in their lifetime.)

This is not a comment on appropriateness, just the breathlessness.

Trade wars are good and easy to win. Tariffs are the greatest. If they are so good, why do the farmers need $12 billion in aid? (Most farmers say they want trade, not aid).

One was the result of a foreign policy decision. The other was the result of a trade policy decision. Both were Administration driven.

As much as I don't like Salon, this probably won't be featured at Breitbart.

To be fair though, Trump IS pissing all over liberty and your response is to gaf about reputation on an internet forum.

You care about the farmers? You subsidize them.

It isn't really that complicated. Listing forty things wrong with the current affairs of government is worth more than posting a Salon source.

The US is a bankrupt warmongering police state. More debt, wars, and tyranny won't save the US. Debt, wars, and tyranny don't benefit you. Debt, wars, and tyranny benefit the elites.

    Debt enriches the elites.

Wars help the ruling class kill off the 99% and makes money for the defense companies.

The police state helps the 1% boost the private prison industry.

One problem with the police state is that every law has unintended consequences.

Banning dogs, baggy pants, and smoking helps fill private prisons and increases government spending and taxes.

How can people resist tyranny if protesting is illegal?

How can people defend themselves without guns?

Why was soda safe 20 years ago, but now is suddenly dangerous?

A society based on the freedom to choose is better than a society based on the principles of socialism, communism, and coercion.

Government laws lead to more crime. If only murder and theft were illegal, obeying the law would be easy, but no one respects the law when everything is illegal.

Most of the problems of today would be solved by embracing what worked in the past.

People were born in the past without birth certificates.

    People could travel without passports.

People can learn how to drive without driver licenses.

People could travel without being groped by the TSA.

The government does not need to wiretap people.

Businesses that do not have business licenses will go bankrupt if they provide bad service.

People will not starve if they do not have food stamps.

People can find cheap doctors in the world without Obamacare.

People will not have a vested interest in driving dangerously if there are no liability insurance laws.

People could carry guns, no one had Social Security numbers, and there were no sales, income, or property taxes in the past.

Drugs, alcohol, smoking, gambling, prostitution, sodas, protesting, and mosques were legal before, why can't they be legal now?

The US did not torture in the past, why does the US need to torture now?

The USA had open borders before, why must the US have closed borders now?

If self-serve gas stations can be legal in one place, why can't they be legal everywhere?

If seeing eye dogs are legal in restaurants, why can't all dogs be legal in restaurants?

Would crime rise if everything was legal?

Why do you need the government anyway? Can’t you talk to people who bother you? Could you sue someone? Could you just move away? Can't you protect yourself?

    Think.

A free country that went to war with a evil dictatorship should not become a police state. Thieves cannot take the moral high ground and criticize robbers.

The USA is an immoral bankrupt warmongering police state now.

Americans have learned nothing from history.

Americans have no rights anymore and the US is no longer a democracy.

Americans think every problem should be solved by decree and force now, but every solution causes another problem.

Americans think the government is made up of holy men. Americans think anyone becomes a saint when they wear a costume, badge, and a gun.

The solution for problems should be what worked in the past.

Americans say that rent control should be used to reduce high rents instead of reducing regulations.

When regulations lead to a bad economy, Americans think that the homeless should be put in jail and businesses should be given bailouts.

Instead of allowing people to feed the homeless, Americans think feeding the homeless should be outlawed.

Instead of getting rid of welfare that encourages girls to marry the state instead of a man and leads to broken families, Americans think food stamps should be expanded.

Instead of getting rid of minimum wages that cripple the ability of the US to compete on the world market, Americans think the US should increase the minimum wage and start a trade war by enacting tariffs.

When food stamps lead to increased debt, Americans think that taxes should be raised.

Americans think the only way to attend college is to have student loans, but student loans raise the cost of tuition.

Instead of ending wars that lead to terrorism, tyranny, debt, and refugees, Americans think that the wars should be increased.

Instead of arresting sex traffickers, Americans would rather shut down free speech and prostitution.

Americans would rather ban video games instead of arresting murderers.

Instead of allowing the free market to decide what companies are good, Americans would rather shut down monopolies.

Instead of educating people, Americans would rather jail people for using their own property in the wrong way.

Central planning has failed everywhere. China used to encourage people to have kids, but after China became overpopulated, China had an one-child policy.

The USA is supposed to be a free country. The reason the Americans fought the British was because Americans wanted to be free.

When our overlords make a decree, they always sell it as a minor temporary law that only affects Muslims, junkies, sex offenders, homosexuals, illegal immigrants, or blacks. The 1% doesn’t mention that the law will become permanent and more draconian.

No one cares if owning cows are illegal, yoga pants are illegal, teen driving is illegal, or smoking is illegal. The problem is what happens when your job is banned, the government steals your house, tortures your family, or sends you to the concentration camps.

Are you just going to take it?

If tyranny is so wonderful then why do people try to escape North Korea?

Would you rather be locked in a padded room wearing a strait-jacket and have safety or be homeless on a mountain and have freedom?

The elites are trying today to make Americans dependent children by outlawing everything and giving them food stamps. Once Americans are weakened and the US Ponzi economy implodes, the ruling class will then send the 99% off to the gulags to be starved and killed.

Governments are not kind. Governments have killed millions of people in Nazi concentration camps, Soviet gulags, the Chinese Great Leap Forward, and the Cambodian killing fields.

Liberty is not something that only benefits other people, but not you. Freedom benefits everyone.

Tyranny is not something that only punishes other people, but not you. Tyranny punishes everyone.

    Freedom is good.

    Tyranny is bad.

    This is no joke.

History repeats and the signs are everywhere.

Anyone who supports the government is just a tool of the elites.

    Wake up.

How are the crops looking this year? Seems lots of reports of drought-like conditions across a lot of the country so wondering if it isn't at least partly a stealth bailout from a bad harvest. At some point, the weather changes ongoing have to start having an impact on yields. It would be easy to blame tariffs/trade war for crop failures and then dole out taxpayer money to the farmers affected, especially if crop insurance doesn't cover the losses. Just food for thought, no pun intended.

You do have a point about the stuff that goes on in this forum. I know I can go over the top with my posting things ancient in order to make a point. I'm going to leave the glory days alone. Keep a focus on the ongoing trainwreck that is the Trump Administration. I will cool it, and precisely for the reasons you suggested in thy message. There is a friendship I had, and that is in part why I respect that guy for being a decent soul. I shudder to think what the next act of the morality play is, if DJT has just f#cked over many of IOWA's farmers.

    Americans scream for their chains.

Americans are so fearful, brainwashed, dependent, or ignorant that they think like children and justify every law and overlook every abuse carried out by the government. They believe government workers are kind gods who can do no wrong. Americans would rather blame the victim of government abuse than the government. Americans feel that the government can run their lives better they can and that safety is more important than freedom.

Americans feel that the correct response to tyranny is surrender. Americans believe the only ones who support freedom are pedophiles, hippies, retards, foreigners, terrorists, ******s, spammers, trolls, shills, bots, racists, junkies, CIA employees, traitors, nutjobs, Communists, or Fascists. Americans think freedom only benefits other people. Americans believe that they will never be a victim of tyranny. Americans think the only possible way to solve any problem is force.

Americans are so fat, degraded, and drugged up that they eagerly allow themselves to be molested to ride a bus, offer their fingerprints to get a driver license, and open their bags to be searched so they can ride a subway.

If Americans are asked about the US debt, they respond that it doesn't matter because it is not real money and doesn't need to be paid back. Americans say the USA should start a trade war because there might be a war. Americans say tax breaks are theft. Americans think the post office should lose money. Americans believe roads would turn to dirt and people would be forced to ride horses if there was a smaller government. Americans insist government decrees made the USSR successful. Americans feel countries are strong when white people are dead. Americans believe the US always had seatbelt checkpoints and TSA groping. Americans say revolting against the British was a huge mistake. Americans say interstate trade should be banned. Americans believe Americans do not live in the USA. Americans say those who love freedom do not use cash. Americans insist that the US didn't have black people before today.

Americans think private corporations print the US dollar. Americans say building fewer houses indicates a booming economy and leads to lower home prices. Americans believe the government should set a maximum wage. Americans think unemployment is high because people are working two jobs. Americans believe North America was uninhabited before the Europeans arrived. Americans say Jesus was immoral.

Americans claim that they will start a blog when the US shuts down the Internet. Reporters are being arrested now, but Americans say reporters are never arrested. Americans say the US cannot revoke passports because Americans are dual citizens. Americans say cellphones cannot be wiretapped. The USSR had concentration camps, but Americans say the US could never afford them. Americans say high gas prices are not a problem because the US has unlimited oil.

Americans think the homeless should be beheaded. Americans say everyone would be a slave if there was no minimum wage. Americans like low priced imports, but think companies are evil for off-shoring jobs. Americans say choosing to work for a wage means that you are exploited. Americans think those who oppose taxes support slavery. Americans believe being forced by the government to serve every customer means freedom. Americans feel everyone would be raped, stabbed, or shot by homosexuals if the US was a free country. Americans think people should be arrested for withdrawing money from their own bank accounts because they might do drugs. Americans say beer taxes should be raised to stop people from drinking. Americans don't mind having their faces scanned for a facial recognition database. Americans think the US had freedom because it became rich first instead of getting rich because it had freedom. Americans say responsibility means obeying unconstitutional laws.

Americans believe aluminum prices are cheap because the world is flooded by WWII salvage. Americans think tyranny that happened last week is no longer relevant. Americans scream facts are lies. Americans claim politics is not news. Americans believe living in a police state means freedom. Americans say good is evil. Americans believe gold is more abundant than silver. Americans think illegal immigrants should get welfare. Americans believe making a profit is theft. Americans think only white people are allowed to have freedom. Americans believe learning history and rebelling means that you will remain a delusional puppet of the police state. Americans insist that they live in a free country if they can get away with breaking laws. Americans think being dependent on food stamps means freedom. Americans think tyranny is acceptable if you live in a republic. Americans say the government should decide what the truth is instead of the media.

Americans think police officers who don't arrest suspects should be executed. Americans feel that computers should be outlawed because technology and high productivity leads to low wages and low prices. Americans believe the police state is necessary because dangerous machines and chemicals exist. Americans will say that the USA is collapsing because there is too much freedom.

Americans think people should be arrested for feeding the homeless. Americans think car owners should be jailed for warming their cars in their own driveways. Americans say the police should be allowed to shoot unarmed people in the back. Americans think porn should be banned because naked pictures destroy society. Americans believe the government should force them to buy things. Americans say the government should increase housing regulations to make rents unaffordable for black people.

Americans think the government should force car companies to install airbags that deploy with knives inside to kill drivers so that they will drive carefully. Americans believe people should be jailed for filming public buildings. Americans think endless wars are fine because US bombs are just gathering dust. Americans support government secrecy because the USA has enemies. Americans think taxes create more jobs than the free market can. Americans think government workers deserve high wages because they work hard. Americans feel that the economy should be destroyed to save the environment. Americans say that regulations encourage people to start companies.

Americans feel that everyone accused of crimes are guilty. Americans say people should be in prison to keep the unemployment rate down. Americans would rather increase punishments for victimless nanny state laws instead of repealing them. Americans think the desires of neighbors are more important than the rights of property owners. Americans believe the government owns everything because the government is the people.

Americans think billboards should be banned to protect the scenery. Americans want protesting to be outlawed because protesters might break windows. Americans think forcing people to stand for the national anthem means freedom. Americans say people are helpless so they need the government to force them to do everything. Americans would think a president who wants to restore the Constitution is a dictator.

When asked about gun control, Americans say it's needed for safety. If asked about free speech, Americans respond that no one should be offended. Americans think Muslims don't have religious rights because Islam is not a religion. Americans say asset forfeiture is fine because the police have been doing it for years. Americans defend NSA wiretapping because it's just metadata. Americans believe being molested by the TSA is good since they have nothing to hide. Americans say torture is okay because other countries do it. Americans even say the Bill of Rights should be abolished because George Washington owned slaves!

The collapse of the USA is disgusting and shameful.

Those who still support the government are just tools for the elites.

The US deserves everything coming to it.

    Wow.

    Americans have gone bat$#@! insane.

These trade wars will drive up prices, kill jobs, and reduce exports.

Americans used to be able to buy cheap imports, but now they will be forced to buy expensive $#@!ty US products. American companies will have no incentive to produce quality goods now that imports are highly taxed.

Do Americans not understand that the USSR failed?

Do Americans know that the USA is supposed to be a free country?

You don’t need to be a libtard to understand that trade wars are bad.

No one is saying companies cannot make goods in the USA.

The problem is that North Korea has closed borders, but no one wants to live a police state.

Hong Kong has no tariffs, but they are rich.

    https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-fewest-prohibitively-expensive-tariffs.html

The USA benefits if a country dumps products on the US. If a nation sold $50 tires to the US for $40 then the USA wins by getting cheap products.

If a foreign country had a 900% import tax then their prices would be very high.

If China had a 200% import tax and the US had no tariffs, but then the USA raised the import tax, wouldn’t China retaliate?

A country would get jobs in the short term by exporting products at a loss, but eventually they would go bankrupt.

You cannot get rich by decree. You cannot set rents at $10 per month, wages at $1000 per hour, and have 200% tariffs with no consequences.

Fundamentally, there are only two ways of coordinating the economic activities of millions. One is central direction involving the use of coercion – the technique of the army and of the modern totalitarian state. The other is voluntary cooperation of individuals – the technique of the marketplace.

This is not the Soviet Union.

If you want more jobs and want to compete on the world market then the USA needs to cut wages and reduce regulations. You can’t pay Americans $23 per hour and expect to compete with Chinese workers who will work for $1 per hour.

Did you know that there was a stock market crash in 2008, a trade war and depression in the 2010’s, and WWIII is likely to start by 2025?

Trade wars made the Great Depression worse. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Americans believe that the reason the US has a trade deficit is because other countries cheat and have high tariffs. Americans don’t realize the US benefits by getting low priced imports and could also be a successful exporting country if the USA had lower wages and fewer regulations.

Those who sell more products work harder, work more cheaply, have better quality, or use more technology.

    Think.

Did you know that there was a stock market crash in 1929, a trade war and depression in the 1930’s, and WWII started in 1939?

Did you know that there was a stock market crash in 2008, a trade war and depression in the 2010’s, and WWIII is likely to start by 2025?

Trade wars made the Great Depression worse. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

    What country is this?

You know that you live in the Twilight Zone when Americans support tyranny. Are Americans Commies now?

Those who own imported cars, clothes, televisions, phones, and computers sound like hypocrites when they slam free trade. Vote with your feet and don’t buy foreign products if you hate free trade.

^^^^This^^^^ actually makes sense. No doubt the usual suspects will be along shortly to try and Trumpsplain it away.

    What's wrong with freedom?

Nazis scream that burning the flag must be illegal, but Libertarians ask why can't free speech be legal.

Nazis say there must be trade wars and tariffs, but Libertarians ask why not just rid of regulations, work harder, and lower prices so that the US can compete on the world market.

Nazis and Commies scream that only the government can tell you the truth, but Libertarians ask why not use the free market to boycott media companies that you distrust.

Nazis and Commies scream that you must go to government schools, but Libertarians ask why can't you go to a private school.

Nazis scream that Americans must be forced to go church and Commies scream that churches must be closed, but Libertarians ask why can't you do what you want.
