Public School: Be a good citizen! Obey!

Spotted at my 1st grader's classroom, made me a little sick.

Yes, I know I should be homeschooling. I should be sending them to private school. Those things are not possible for me.
What I can do is be involved and help my kids sort the $#@! from the sugar.

So with that, be prepared to barf:

    Is that one satire?

I've seen things like the one in the OP before. Its disgusting. Teaching kids to be little drones. Nobody should be loyal to this country at this point.

That said, government propaganda centers will be propaganda centers. They cannot be "reformed." They have to be torn down.

Vote no on ALL school budgets. Don't even read them, just vote no, period.

    How about this?

    Are you a good citizen?
    • Do you respect other peoples' property?
    • Do you earn your keep?
    • Do you support charities or individuals in need?
    • Do you help protect your family?

Does it bother you that they receive citizenship scores on their report cards based on how well they "follow the rules?"

I wonder if it's against the rules to sit down while everyone else is saying the Pledge...

Most people wouldn't be. "Protecting the Earth" is absolutely stupid and most conservatives would have more an issue with that one. But I have issues with teaching kids that obeying the law is always good too, ESPECIALLY in public school. Its designed to teach drones. It might be appropriate to teach your own kids that, for a number of reasons, but it shouldn't be in public school (Then again, there's no good use for a public school other than as firewood.)

I stood for the pledge when I was in high school. I don't think I could do it anymore. I certainly could not salute the flag. The flag-waving, especially among professing Christians is really starting to get to me.

"You and the Law" - a publication by the State Bar of Michigan for elementary/middle school students. It's basically "here are the laws that might affect you as a young adult." The propaganda is mostly contained in the introduction:

    INTRODUCTION–WHAT IS LAW?
Law is a set of rules designed to help people get along with each other. We need rules to live and work together in peace and safety.

If we break a rule at home or at school, we are punished in some way. The reason is not to make the rule breaker “pay” for disobeying the rules, but to show that it is not worthwhile to break a rule. If there were no punishment, some might think that there’s no good reason to follow the rules.

The law works the same way, for the same reason. But there’s one big difference between rules at home and the law: If you break a rule at home, your parents may ask, “Why did you do it?” and your reason may make a difference in what they do about it. If you break a law, your reason won’t make much difference. If you tear down the highway at high speed because you’re angry about a fight with a friend, you are putting other people’s lives and property in danger. The law won’t ask, “Why are you speeding?” Your reason doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you endangered others by speeding, and for that you will be punished, so that the next time you’re angry, you’ll stop and think before jumping into the car and tearing off.

Another difference between rules at home and the law is the “record,” which is a list of offenses. In many cases, the law protects juveniles (anyone under 17) by making their records nonpublic. The reason for a record is to protect all the people against a person who breaks the law more than once. A record may be very important to you; a careless or thoughtless act now could hurt you later when you want a good job, want to be bonded, to get a security clearance, or enter college or the armed forces.

There is an enormous body of laws in a society as complex as ours. Even lawyers and judges cannot memorize all the law, but everyone should remember the purpose of the law: to protect the safety, peace, and property of each of us.
I can't even comment on it in a short post. It doesn't address rights; it paints a horrible picture of what they think parents can do; it doesn't even pretend that they represent the people. It's entire thesis is that "The reason the law is enforced is to show that the law should be followed."

It's entirely circular, tyrannical, and lacks justification for what the laws are.

I think they have their terminology mixed up, that is not citizenship. But grading based on following rules is fine with me.

I like the pledge myself, but understand why some don't and know it was originally written by a socialist. I think it's evolved into something better in the present day. I don't think it should be mandatory to say it.

It's not OK with me, but there's not much I can do about it. To me it says that the school values compliance as much as it does education.

I think kids should be taught to follow the rules. Not blindly, it's ok to question.

There is always something you can do about the way your kids are educated. Homeschooling, private schooling or talk to the teachers in public school.

"If you lived in a place where you had to eat your meals at the government-owned restaurant you were assigned to by zip code, where if you chose a better but private restaurant you would be punished by being forced to pay for both, where most of the people employed in the government-owned restaurants demanded your money and your patronage and opposed giving you a choice, you would--if you're a reasonable person with a little self-esteem and respect for liberty--take to the streets in passionate protest. You would likely boycott the government restaurants. Well, this is the way government "education" works. So are you in the streets or just quietly paying its bills as it propagandizes your kids and teaches self-serving obedience to the state and its nonsense?"

So they admit it: even those within the system cannot know or comprehend or memorize all the law.

But we are told we must comply with all law, and increasingly brutal law enforcement squads are standing by to force compliance.

That is not the protection of safety, peace or prosperity or, not even mentioned, liberty.

That is a police state: the antithesis of peace and prosperity and liberty.

In the hands of the state, compulsory public education becomes a tool for political control and manipulation—a prime instrument for the thought police of the society. And precisely because every child passes through the same indoctrination process—learning the same “official history,” the same “civic virtues,” the same lessons of obedience and loyalty to the state—it becomes extremely difficult for the independent soul to free himself from the straightjacket of the ideology and values the political authorities wish to imprint upon the population under its jurisdiction. For the communists, it was the class struggle and obedience to the Party and Comrade Stalin; for the fascists, it was worship of the nation-state and obedience to the Duce; for the Nazis, it was race purity and obedience to the Fuhrer. The content has varied, but the form has remained the same. Through the institution of compulsory state education, the child is to be molded like wax into the shape desired by the state and its educational elite We should not believe that because ours is a freer, more democratic society, the same imprinting procedure has not occurred even here, in America. Every generation of school-age children has imprinted upon it a politically correct ideology concerning America’s past and the sanctity of the role of the state in society. Practically every child in the public school system learns that the “robber barons” of the 19th century exploited the common working man; that unregulated capitalism needed to be harnessed by enlightened government regulation beginning in the Progressive era at the turn of the century; that wild Wall Street speculation was a primary cause of the Great Depression; that only Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal saved America from catastrophe; and that American intervention in foreign wars has been necessary and inevitable, with the United States government required to be a global leader and an occasional world policeman. - Richard Eberling, Introduction to Separating School & State

In all countries, in all centuries, the primary reason for government to set up schools is to undermine the politically weak by convincing their children that the leaders are good and their policies are wise. … for more than three full lifetimes, the 220 years from the 1620s to the 1840, most American schooling was independent of government control, subsidy, and influence. From this educational freedom the American Republic was born. Now, after 150 years of tax-financed schooling, we see more and more children failing to grow into responsible, caring, competent adults. … I want every child in America, especially the children of the poor, to be able to go to a better school than they do today. And I think separation is the way to do it. For more than 220 years - from the 1620s to the 1840s - most American schooling was independent of government control, subsidy, and influence. From this educational freedom the American Republic was born. We birthed this republic a lifetime before there was any compulsory attendance in America, and since the beginning of the compulsory attendance legislation in 1852, I think we've seen much of the essence of this republic slip between our fingers. In a free country, the state does not compel the parents to send their children to school. We are not the chattels of the state. Public schools are based on four false premises: 1. Welfare works, 2. Socialism works, 3. Parents have insufficient wisdom, and 4. We can teach character without mentioning God. We need to replace those false premises with truisms, and the truisms I suggest are: 1. Responsibility works, 2. Freedom works, 3. Parents have more wisdom than politicians, and 4. To teach character, we must integrate three factors: the reason for morality, examples of morality, and instruction in morality. …Our society is falling like a streamlined brick into a cesspool of violence, into a sort of hedonism on steroids, into a shortsightedness that will truly become a culture of death. We look with disgust at Andersonville, Aushwitz and the gulag: if we do not reverse this culture, we are looking at our future. State schools are the reproductive organs of statism. The separation of school and state is part of the reversal of the idolatry of government. - Marshall Fritz, founder of the Alliance for the Separation of School and State, 1943-2008

Some good ones from the great John Taylor Gatto:
Government schooling is the most radical adventure in history. It kills the family by monopolizing the best times of childhood and by teaching disrespect for home and parents.

Much of the weird behavior kids display is a function of the aperiodic reinforcement schedule. And the endless confinement and inactivity slowly drives children out of their minds. Trapped children, like trapped rats, need close management. Any rat psychologist will tell you that.

School is the first impression children get of organized society. Like most first impressions it is the lasting one. Life is dull and stupid, only Coke provides relief. And other products, too, of course

The net effect of holding children in confinement for twelve years without honor paid to the spirit is a compelling demonstration that the State considers the Western spiritual tradition dangerous

The strongest meshes of the school net are invisible. Constant bidding for a stranger’s attention creates a chemistry producing the common characteristics of modern schoolchildren: whining, dishonesty, malice, treachery, cruelty. Unceasing competition for official favor in the dramatic fish bowl of a classroom delivers cowardly children, little people sunk in chronic boredom, little people with no apparent purpose for being alive.

From his book: The Underground History of American Education: A School Teacher's Intimate Investigation Into the Problem of Modern Schooling(2000)
