France's Yellow Vest protests continued into their sixth week on Saturday - albeit in much smaller numbers. France's Interior Ministry reported 23,800 protesters came out across the country as of 2 p.m. local time Saturday, vs. 66,000 last weekend, and 136,000 two weeks ago.
142 people were arrested in Paris by 7 p.m. - down from 170 the week before.

The Macron government has tried to contain the protests - offering economic concessions to try and curb anger over a fuel tax hike and other grievances which have brought protesters out en masse.


Saturday's protests started off peaceful as the diminished number of demonstrators appeared to be less organized in previous weeks. "The mobilization is quieter, we’re in a holiday season," Yellow Vest organizer Paul Marra said on national television.

Several hundred gathered near the Sacré Coeur Basilica in the Paris neighborhood of Montmartre, before making their way toward the Palais Garnier opera house. Most stores and restaurants remained open, and protesters intermingled with Christmas shoppers. -WSJ

Then things grew tense as violence broke out. At one point a group of Yellow Vests reported to be in the famous Champs Elysees were filmed throwing road cones at police as they drove away from the scene, while police deployed tear gas as clashes broke out.

The protests against President Emmanuel Macron may have eased in the run-up to Christmas, but dozens of demonstrators camped out at roundabouts across France are vowing to keep up the pressure, with no plans to head home for the holidays.Devilled eggs, foie gras and a traditional buche de Noel cake for dessert: "We wouldn't have all this if we celebrated Christmas at home," said Xavier, a 44-year-old at a roundabout in Somain, northern France.
He was among some 30 people having dinner ahead of Christmas Eve mass on Monday night, savouring the generosity of supporters who donated the delicacies, as well as the newfound camaraderie forged in the "yellow vest" movement.
"At the beginning we were protesting against fuel prices, but we've become friends and tell ourselves, 'We're not all alone'," added Christine, 51.


"The thing which brings us all together is that we're sick and tired of struggling," Alexandre, a 38-year-old labourer, said at the roundabout in Somain, alongside his wife and two children.
A new protest has been called for December 31 in Paris on the Champs-Elysees, where tens of thousands of tourists and locals traditionally gather to ring in the new year.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has promised to "restore order" after the latest violence Saturday night, when three police on motorcycles had to flee dozens of attackers on the capital's iconic avenue.


The protests have enjoyed widespread public approval, especially in areas like Somain, which has been hit hard by the decline of coal mining and other heavy industry in northern France.
Protesters themselves say their movement has fostered a newfound sense of community and solidarity.
"It's my second family," said Laurent, brandishing a French flag around a fire next to his 19-year-old son, Kevin. "We've gotten used to seeing each other every day for a month now."
"At the beginning I didn't know anyone, but we've become a family -- that's the only good thing Macron has done, to bring people closer together," added Christophe Damiens, next to a sign saying "Macron, Scram!"
"The more he squeezes us, the more people will be here, even more united."


Father Joseph Nurchi, donning a yellow vest, assured the Somain protesters that "the Church is on the side of the losers" as he prepared to celebrate a mass on site late Monday.
"I wanted to be next to the most vulnerable tonight," he added. "It's a revolt that has moved me."

The protesters chanted various versions of "Fake news journalists come down," and "Macron out!" at the TV station which one protester told RT France spreads false information about the movement, while purposefully understating the size of its demonstrations.
Saturday's protesters were met with tear gas and a heavy police presence, which has become part and parcel to the violent demonstrations of weeks past.

Police fired tear gas at "yellow vest" demonstrators in Paris on Saturday but the turnout for round seven of the popular protests that have rocked France appeared low.

If Emmanuel Macron is hoping for some holiday respite from the anti-government protests which have rocked France, he might want to avoid the presidential retreat on the Mediterranean coast.Around 40 "yellow vest" demonstrators on Thursday tried to storm the medieval fort of Bregancon that serves as Macron's summer retreat before being turned back by police, the mayor of nearby Bormes-les-Mimosas, Francois Arizzi, told AFP on Friday.


Bregancon generated some unwanted headlines last summer when it emerged Macron was installing a 34,000 euro ($39,000) swimming pool at the fort, which already has its own private beach.
In theory the site is currently unoccupied, though the presidency has refused to disclose where Macron and his wife Brigitte are spending the holidays.
Press reports have said the president cancelled a planned Christmas skiing trip, possibly at his long-time destination of La Mongie in the Pyrenees, not far from where his grandmother lived while he was growing up.

As the Yellow Vest demonstrations lose steam as the movement enters its seventh week, French President Emmanuel Macron is offering still more concessions to the demonstrators as he attempts to revive his moribund approval rating, which has sunk to just above 20%.

After his government promised tax cuts that will blow out the French budget deficit and urged French companies to pay year-end bonuses to their employees, effectively a call to bribe them into calming down, Macron said that he's planning to crack down on executives who have avoided paying taxes in France. Extra scrutiny will be applied to executives of companies of which the French government owns a stake.

The French government is scrutinizing the tax situation of business leaders and will take measures to force them to pay their taxes in France if necessary, Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper. Pre
"Heads of listed businesses or businesses in which the state has a stake must absolutely be French tax residents," Darmanin said in the interview.

According to Bloomberg, the decision is Macron's latest attempt to quell the Yellow Vests demonstrators' anger, more than one month after he abandoned his plans to hike gas taxes, a move he tried to spin as a concession to environmentalists (who were subsequently angered by his decision to back down).
But the people of France saw these proposed tax hikes as just another sign that Macron was placing a disproportionate share of the French state's tax burden on the common people, and allowing the wealthy to walk free (after taking office, he scrapped a wealth tax in a move that was seen as a betrayal by many of those who voted for him).
After tax cuts take effect in the new year, Macron has also promised a dialogue about inequality and the high cost of living in France.
France's budget minister said efforts to make executives pay tax in France should encourage more "civic" behavior. However, ramping up taxes on the wealthy might be more difficult than the French government is making it believe (which is one reason Macron has resisted reimposing the wealth tax).

But making all executives pay tax in France will not be simple as it could require renegotiating tax conventions.
"It would take years and we aren’t necessarily in a position of force to impose our views," Olivier Grenon-Andrieu, head of wealth advisory firm Equance, told Le Journal du Dimanche.

Still, whether any of this will help boost Macron's popularity remains to be seen: So far, his approval rating has only continued to sag, offering an opening to the nationalists whom he defeated during his presidential victory.

In an interview with investigative website Mediapart, Benalla said Sunday that he continued giving advice to the 41-year-old president via the Telegram messaging app, which the president uses intensively.
“We exchange messages on lots of different subjects. It’s often like, ‘how do you see things’. It could be about the ‘yellow vests’, the views on someone or security issues,” Benalla said.

Speaking after a year which has seen his approval ratings plunge to new and historic lows and even the President placing a helicopter on standby to escape angry protesters, Emmanuel Macron defied expectations on New Year’s Eve to deliver a speech that was combative and unapologetic. The address came as a significant change of tone from just when weeks before when he attempted to defang the Yellow Vest protests by promising policy changes.
Instead of speaking of a united France as he did last year, Macron attacked his detractors, who have taken to the streets in weekly protests over two months to demand his resignation. While the protests have at times turned violent, the rebels have enjoyed the broad support of the French public — unlike their increasingly unpopular President.


Attacking the character of Yellow Vest protestors — who he did not call by name — and calling them un-French liars, Macron said in the televised address from his Paris palace that they are: “the megaphones of a hate-filled crowd attacking elected representatives, the forces of law and order, journalists, Jews, foreigners, homosexuals.
“That is simply the negation of France. I have recently seen things that are unthinkable and heard the unacceptable… Republican order will be ensured with no leniency.”

Despite his having rowed back on the policy of pricing vehicle ownership out of the means of ordinary French citizens by levying high taxes on fuel, Macron vowed to continue with his policy programme in the speech. Making clear his unpopular — but some claim necessary — reforms would continue despite opposition, Macron told the nation: “We can’t work less, earn more, cut taxes and increase spending… We can and must do better.”

Emmanuel Macron’s head of media relations has heaped yet more pressure on the beleaguered French President by saying he was planning to quit, in a clear indication that a grueling reform drive and a spate of political scandal and street protests are starting to wear down his inner circle a year and a half into his mandate.

Sylvain Fort, who shaped Mr. Macron’s campaign messaging during his successful presidential campaign and penned some of the young leader’s most memorable speeches, will leave the Elysee Palace for “personal reasons.” Mr. Fort said: ”After two years and a half of relentless work serving the candidate and later our president, I wish to pursue other professional and personal projects, and above all dedicate more time to my family.” His resignation follows the departure of Mr. Macron’s political adviser late last year to lead the ruling party’s European Parliament election campaign, and comes as a massive blow to the 41-year-old, who is increasingly being portrayed as out of touch and arrogant in the French media.

Eric Drouet, one of the key figures in the French Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) movement, has been arrested for organising an event without prior declaration.

Mr Drouet, who has been one of the leading figures of the Yellow Vests and has appeared frequently on French media, was taken into custody on Wednesday while heading for the Champs-Élysées after calling for a spontaneous demonstration online, according to a Paris prosecutor, Le Figaro reports.


The arrest is not the first for Drouet who was also taken into custody at the “Act VI” demonstration on December 22nd for being in possession of an illegal weapon when he was caught carrying a baton.
The Yellow Vest activist came to national prominence in France after an appearance on broadcaster BFMTV in which he suggested the protesters mobilise and enter the Élysées Palace, the seat of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Critics slammed Drouet, claiming he had called for the overthrow of the French leader, and although Drouet denied the allegations he received a visit from police following the broadcast of the programme.
The prominent activist was not the only Yellow Vest member to be arrested this week. In Vesoul, a 51-year-old man was arrested after mentioning the word “guillotine” to a member of President Macron’s La Republique En Marche! (LREM) twice. He was charged with “threats against an elected member of the nation,” according to prosecutors.

Two months after they started blocking roads, occupying highway tollbooths and staging sometimes-violent street protests in Paris, the yellow vests wanted to inject new momentum into a movement that weakened over the holidays.
Macron's government, shaken by the unrest, had this week hardened its stance, branding the protesters agitators seeking to overthrow the government.
Driving the unrest is anger, particularly among low-paid workers, over a squeeze on household incomes, and a belief that Macron is deaf to citizens' needs as he enacts reforms seen as favoring the wealthy.
"They have no right to leave us in the $#@! like this," said protester Francois Cordier. "We're fed up with having to pay out the whole time, we've had enough of this slavery, we should be able to live on our salaries."
Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux escaped from his office through a back door after a small number of protesters broke into the compound and smashed up vehicles.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said about 50,000 people had protested in cities nationwide, including Bordeaux, Toulouse, Rouen and Marseille.

Yellow Vest protesters are planning another demonstration, this time outside the Rothschild Bank of Lyon, France.
A Facebook event reveals over 3,000 French Yellow Vest protesters have expressed interest in attending a protest at the Rothschild Bank of Lyon, France, due in part to a 40-year-old grievance with France’s private banking system.
The event description explains that “The [French] state borrows from private banks, digs debt,” allowing the private banks to make money from interest loans made to the French government.
In 1973, after intense lobbying from the Rothschild Bank of France, French President George Pompidou signed legislation preventing the government from taking 0 percent interest loans from the Bank of France, the country’s central bank. Instead, the Bank of France is required to loan money to private banks, such as the Rothschild Bank of France, which can then lend money to the French government with interest.


Many of the Yellow Vest protesters point to this legislation as the cause of France’s swelling public debt. Since 1980, France’s public debt expanded from a historic low of 56.17 percent of France’s Gross Domestic Product to 97 percent in 2017.
“Very good initiative,” one protester wrote on Facebook, “Finally we protest the real debt managers and not their puppets.”
The protest, titled “Les Gilets Jaune Bloque La Banque Rothschild de Lyon”, is scheduled for Tuesday, January 9.

Italy’s co-deputy prime ministers, Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, have both voiced their support for the ‘Yellow Vest’ protest movement in France in a stunning blow to the European establishment.
Following the eighth week of high-intensity demonstrations across France, Salvini slammed French President Emmanuel Macron while Di Maio encouraged the Yellow Vests to stay the course.
“I support honest citizens who protest against a governing president [who is] against his people,” Salvini said, according to RT.


At the same time, Di Maio urged the Yellow Vests to “not give up” in a blog post on his party website.
“From Italy we have been following your battle from the day you appeared for the first time, coloring the streets of Paris and other French cities in yellow,” Di Maio wrote. “We know what animates your spirit and why you decided to take to the streets.”
“In France, as in Italy, politics has become deaf to the needs of citizens who have been kept out of the most important decisions affecting the people. The cry that rises strongly from the French squares is ultimately one: ‘let us participate!'”
Di Maio accused Macron and other European elites of implementing policies that hurt all of Europe, especially those pertaining to immigration and economics.


As France now burns on a weekly basis and Macron’s disapproval rating has hit 75 percent, Salvini enjoys massive support in Italy and beyond, as does Di Maio’s 5 Star Movement.
“History will probably show that if [Macron] had focused more on the French and less on Salvini and Italy, he would have a few less problems today,” Salvini said weeks ago. “Do people in Italy want scenes like we’ve seen in Paris? No. I want to prevent this.”

The new measures will significantly toughen punishment for people who participate in riots, Philippe said, while adding that it was still “necessary to preserve the freedom” to demonstrate in France. Those who want to protest peacefully should not be punished, he said.
The announcement comes as part of new “public order” measures unveiled by the government after the Yellow Vest protests resulted in violence against police officers and government buildings.

Philippe’s office said in a statement on Monday that the government would take “a very firm stance” against the “continued unacceptable violence across the country.”
Philippe also told channel TF1 that a major police force of 80,000 will be deployed in France next Saturday, including 5,000 in Paris. Over 1,000 people have already been charged in connection with the protests and rioting, he added.
“Over 1,000 sentences have been given in total. Around 5,600 people have been detained since the beginning of the [Yellow Vest] movement,” Philippe said.
“We cannot accept that some people take advantage of these demonstrations to break, to burn,” he stressed.


The newly announced measures to curb the nationwide protest movement received mixed reactions. While Mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc said he was “satisfied” with Philippe’s move, opposition politicians such as Jean-Luc Mélenchon sarcastically claimed that the PM is totally disconnected from reality.
“The king of the Shadocks is in Matignon,” Mélenchon said referring to the popular animated series where ignorant bird-like creatures live on their own planet, and the Matignon Palace, the official residence of the prime minister.
“PM promises more arrests? We want more purchasing power!” tweeted national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) Fabien Roussel. French politician Clementine Autain even wondered if the PM was “hallucinating.”
Although the country’s interior minister Christophe Castaner said he’s “fully behind” the prime minister’s proposal, the president of The Republicans Laurent Wauquiez seemed disappointed, and has called for a return to the state of emergency to immediately “restore order” in France.
Yellow Vest activists, by and large, were furious. “People will keep this government the image of the bloody repression of a citizen movement,” one social media user tweeted. “I am ashamed of my France for this repression. Long live the yellow vests!” said another.

Activists from a French protest movement encouraged supporters Wednesday to set off a bank run by emptying their accounts, while the government urged citizens to express their discontent in a national debate instead of weekly demonstrations disrupting the streets of Paris. Activists from the yellow vest movement, which started with protests over fuel tax increases, recommended the massive cash withdrawals on social media. One protester, Maxime Nicolle called it the "tax collector's referendum."


"We are going to get our bread back ... You're making money with our dough, and we're fed up," Nicolle said in a video message.
The movement's adherents said they hoped the banking action will force the French government to heed their demands, especially giving citizens the right to propose and vote on new laws.


Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe gave details Wednesday of a "big debate" the government plans to start next week in all the regions of France.
"We want it to be rich, impartial and fruitful," Philippe said.
The debates will focus on four main topics: climate change, democratic issues, taxes and public services, the prime minister said. Anyone can propose a local event and an internet platform will provide another venue for discussion, he said.
President Emmanuel Macron proposed the debate as a way for the government to hear and to respond to the movement's central complaints.
Macron also announced 10 billion euros ($11.5 billion) worth of measures to boost the purchasing power of French households.
About 200 protesters, including trade union members and participants in the yellow vest movement, gathered Wednesday in Creteil, a Paris suburb as Macron visited a handball facility dedicated to handball gymnasium.
Police officers used tear gas to keep the crowd at a distance from the French leader.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday announced that he would not attend the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month, citing a busy schedule which includes debates over the ongoing Yellow Vest protests which are set for a ninth week of demonstrations.
Macron will also hold the second edition of his own forum with business leaders in Versailles on January 21, according to Reuters, citing Macron's office.
