A photo from Gov. Ralph Northam's medical school yearbook shows two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the section set aside for Northam. A half-page from the 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook, photographed by The Virginian-Pilot on Friday,
    Feb. 1, 2019.

A photo from Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook shows two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the future governor.

The photo, which The Virginian-Pilot obtained a copy of Friday from the Eastern Virginia Medical School library, comes from the 1984 yearbook, the year Northam graduated.

On the half-page set aside for Northam, there is a headshot of him in a jacket and tie, a photo of him in a cowboy hat and boots and a third of him sitting casually on the ground, leaning against a convertible.

The fourth photo on the half-page has two people, one wearing white Ku Klux Klan robes and a hood, the other with his face painted black. The person with the black face is also wearing a white hat, black jacket, white shirt with a bow tie and plaid pants. Both are holding canned drinks.

It’s unclear who the people in costume are.

Under the photo of the men in blackface and the Klan hood are listed Northam’s alma mater, Virginia Military Institute, and his interest: “Pediatrics.” His quote is listed as “There are more old drunks than old doctors in this world so I think I’ll have another beer.”

The governor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday afternoon.

The chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, Jack Wilson, said in a statement: “Racism has no place in Virginia. These pictures are wholly inappropriate. If Governor Northam appeared in blackface or dressed in a KKK robe, he should resign immediately.”

In a separate statement, four top Republican lawmakers — House of Speaker Kirk Cox, Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment Jr., House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert and Senate Rules Committee Chairman Ryan T. McDougle — said: “This is a deeply disturbing and offensive photograph in need of an immediate explanation by the governor.”

The photo came to light after a week in which the Democratic governor came under fire for his comments about a bill introduced by a first-term Democratic lawmaker that would have loosened restriction abortions in Virginia.

Conservative news outlet Big League Politics first posted the photo at around 2:15 p.m. Friday with the headline “YEARBOOK: Ralph Northam In Blackface & KKK Photo.”

About an hour later, the Virginia GOP caucus Twitter page tweeted, “@governorva needs to explain this immediately.”

On Wednesday, Northam was on a WTOP-FM show and was asked about a failed bill introduced by Del. Kathy Tran that would have relaxed limits on third-trimester abortions.

On the WTOP show, Northam — a child neurologist — defended Tran’s bill, saying it was “blown out of proportion” and that such abortions are done “in cases where there may be severe deformities, there may be a fetus that is nonviable.”

Explaining what would happen in such a case, Northam made comments that were soon seized on by political opponents and others: “The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
Another mark of a tyrant is that he likes foreigners better than citizens, and lives with them and invites them to his table; for the one are enemies, but the Others enter into no rivalry with him. - Aristotle's Politics Book 5 Part 11

Imagine if this was a republican governor. Democrats would be saying right now he needs to step down or be impeached.

The weeks not over yet. We could have a third controversy tomorrow. Maybe some transgender hooker will come forward and say they had a sexual relationship with the governor.

Meanwhile, this probably won’t help Northam’s case much. From CBS News:
CBS News uncovered a page from Northam’s yearbook at the Virginia Military Institute which had nicknames listed underneath his name. One of them was “Coonman,” a racial slur.
Does Northam apologize for that too or ignore it?

Sadly, they don't actually have rules - on either side. With rare exceptions, they're all just partisan opportunists.

Their only use for "rules" (their own or the other side's) is when they can gleefully beat the other side over the head with them.

Indeed. This is just the sort of thing I meant by "the consequences of their $#@!ry". Has the state GOP chair demanded the governor's resignation over the latter's support for the murder of babies (born or unborn)? (And if so, has he done so in a manner other than that of reflexively pro forma, fund-raising/press-statement "outrage"?) If he has (and I don't know that he hasn't, which is why I ask), then I might have some respect for the guy. Otherwise, he's just another opportunistic grandstander who, if the governor was a Republican, would quite probably be keeping his gob firmly shut about the governor's supposed endorsements of "racism" (or even of "infanticide" for that matter) - except, of course, for purposes of "damage control" ...

So it’s okay for a sitting governor to believe it is okay to murder a newborn child, but not okay for him to have a racially insensitive photo on his yearbook page in college?

Sorry if I don’t see the latter as the greater evil.

So what’s the story with this photo? Was it Halloween? Was the point that a KKK guy can party with a black guy? Sounds like a statement of unity. Oh yeah, we don’t care about context or take into account what was acceptable at the time. Carry on with the hysteria. Hang him from his testicles until dead.

2008: blackface acceptable. 10 years ago.

Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller. It stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of prima donna actors who are making a Vietnam War film.
