Airlines group requests limiting emotional support animals to dogs only

The crackdown on suspected fake support animals is reaching a tipping point. A group representing most of the major domestic airlines is asking the Department of Transportation to limit the type of emotional support animals allowed on flights to just dogs.
Airlines for America, which represents nine major airlines, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Jetblue, Southwest, and United, submitted a report to the DOT early this month with requests to tighten rules on emotional support animals.
The report noted the number of passengers wanting to travel with emotional support animals and psychiatric support animals increased by 56 percent from 2016 to 2017. Airlines have also dealt with animals, including wild species, that cannot “behave appropriately in a public setting.”
In January, a passenger on a flight leaving Newark International Airport claimed a peacock was her emotional support animal. United Airlines did not allow the peacock to board the plane, but photos of the peacock perched on a luggage cart went viral.

Ya the problem is government regulations tell airlines what they have to do with animals and how.

It should just be up to the airlines..

Maybe one or two airlines decide they want to be extra animal friendly, maybe allow them on your lap if they are under a certain size if you are in first class or purchase a larger seating area.

I would freak out if I had to put my dog in a kennel and store him in an area of the plane I didn't have access to, with reports of dogs suffocating in overhead storage bins and such.

Then maybe other airlines don't want to allow them at all.. or they have certain flights that allow them on certain planes that are more animal friendly, and other planes and flights that don't have any animals.

The airlines could charge more for the animals that way and it could be profitable for them.

Yes, it's not safe anymore... they are always watching to see if they can find something to report.

Maybe he could get a friendly butcher to make it look like he was eating beef. (mark it beef steaks and store them in the freezer, that way, any time he felt the need for some emotional support, he could thaw one out and get his fix.)

Dexter, the emotional support peacock who captured the public’s attention when he was denied entry on a United flight earlier this year, died unexpectedly in his “favorite human’s arms,” his owner announced Tuesday. The peacock’s owner, New York City-based artist Ventiko, revealed on an Instagram account specifically created for Dexter that the peafowl died around 1 p.m. on July 22. A post shared by Dexter The Peacock (@dexterthepeacock) on Aug 14, 2018 at 9:42am PDT “His passing was sudden and unexpected. Attempts were made to save him, but his doctor confirmed that nothing could have been done to alter his fate,” the artist captioned a photo that appears to show a shrine to Dexter. “Dexter ...

Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday that it will soon enforce new restrictions on customers traveling with emotional support animals.
Beginning September 17, only one dog or cat, either in a carrier or on a leash, will be allowed per customer on Southwest flights.
"Our updates are based on a careful review of the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) recent enforcement guidance and feedback we received from our Customers, Employees, and several advocacy groups and animal-related organizations," the Dallas-based airline said on its community discussion forum, southwestaircommunity.com.
Southwest’s policy says emotional support animals provide "support for an individual with a mental health-related disability and is not trained to perform a specific task(s) or work." They are distinct from trained service animals, which Southwest defines as animals "individually trained to perform a task(s) or work for a person with a physical and/or mental disability."

Customers who wish to travel with their emotional support animals on Southwest, once the changes are in effect, must present the airline with a "current letter" from their doctor or medical health professional on the day of their departure, the announcement said.
(MORE: In a nod to passenger allergies, Southwest Airlines to end its signature, free in-flight peanuts)
All emotional support and service animals are still required to be trained to behave in public, according to Southwest. Any animal that displays disruptive behavior can be denied boarding.
The change will make Southwest the only airline that limits emotional support animals to just dogs and cats, but it is not the first major carrier to adjust its emotional support animal rules.
Delta, United, American and JetBlue separately announced new restrictions earlier this year following a string of emotional support animal incidents, including a dog reportedly attacking a Delta passenger last year, and a woman who was denied boarding in January because her emotional support peacock failed to meet United’s guidelines.
Airlines are now not the only companies tightening their emotional support animal rules. Royal Caribbean also announced Tuesday that emotional support animals "may not sail onboard Royal Caribbean International ships," effective immediately.

The ongoing controversy surrounding passengers' demands to take their 'emotional support animals' with them on long flights took a hilarious turn on Tuesday when a woman was forcibly removed from a Frontier Airlines flight after she was told that her "emotional support" squirrel wouldn't be allowed on board.
Passengers were forced to deplane from flight 1612 from Orlando, Fla., to Cleveland on Tuesday when the woman refused to obey a request to leave the flight with her squirrel, at which point the airline called the Orlando Police, who escorted the woman off the plane. The woman argued that she included in her reservation notes that she would be traveling with an emotional support animal - though the airline argued that she did NOT indicate that said animal would be a squirrel, according to the Cleveland Fox affiliate.
Frontier said it doesn't allow rodents on its fights.
The airline said the passenger noted in her reservation that she was bringing an emotional support animal, but she did not specify that said animal would be a squirrel.
Airlines have been struggling to tighten restrictions on so-called "emotional support animals", with Delta saying earlier this year that all requests for passengers to travel with ESAs would be "thoroughly vetted" (no pun intended, we think).

What's atrocious is that any airline has to seek permission from government overlords at all on what rules it watns to have on passengers flying on its own airlines, flights and planes. Ridiculous.

Delta Airlines said Monday that it will ban all emotional support animals on flights longer than 8 hours and will ban all service and support animals under four months of age on flights no matter the duration. The policy will go into effect Dec. 18, ahead of the Christmas holiday travel season.
“These updates support Delta’s commitment to safety and also protect the rights of customers with documented needs — such as veterans with disabilities — to travel with trained service and support animals,” said John Laughter, Delta’s senior vice president, corporate safety, security and compliance.
Delta DAL, +0.45% said it amended its animal policy after finding an 84% increase in reported incidents involving service and support animals in 2016 and 2017, “including urination/defecation, biting and even a widely reported attack by a 70-pound dog.”
