Waukegan Latinx activists protest renaming Thomas Jefferson Middle School after Barack and Michelle Obama

Those against the Obamas as a name choice say the former president failed to deliver on promises to help the immigrant population.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WLS) -- Waukegan's Board of Education met Tuesday night as it considers changing the names of two of its schools, Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Daniel Webster Middle School.

Jefferson, who was the nation's third president, owned slaves. Webster was a former senator who supported slavery. Renaming committees were formed for each school, and included people in the community, students and staff.

The school board heard concerns from the public Tuesday night over one of the finalists in the running to be the new name for Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

The country's first Black President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama, is one of the top three choices for the school's new name, but is drawing opposition in the area with a large Latinx population.

"I will not be part of renaming a school after someone who did not and does not represent the undocumented community," said District 60 school board member Edgar Castellanos. Castellanos said he came to the United States undocumented as a child.

Be interesting to see how media wing/deep neocon lobbies that had been accused of poodle-mastering the first historic POTUS respond to this criticism.

This is ridiculous. Seems like all the arguments are for how to rename the school - not whether they should be renamed.

Thomas Jefferson, while he owned slaves, did more to end the institution of slavery than anyone who has ever existed. Slavery was a part of acceptable human existence until Enlightenment ideas started to take hold. For hundreds of thousands of years, there was an enslaved class of human beings, but within 150 years of Jefferson's Declaration, the institution crumbled.

And they really want to consider replacing his name with a man who did his best to ensure we all return to that mindset that took millennia to defeat? This world truly has no concept of historical context.

Sell the schools to the highest bidder. Problem solved.

    No future.

    No past.

Just a never ending present, with no way to compare, observe or critique anything or anybody, good or bad.

The Party, in power, forever, with it's boot smashing your face.

    This one is appropriate too:

"The Party member, like the proletarian, tolerates present-day conditions because he has no standards of comparison. He must be cut off from the past, just as he must be cut off from foreign countries, because it is necessary for him to believe that he is better off than his ancestors and that the average level of material comfort is constantly rising."

Everyone has been vilified. Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Jefferson. George Washington. Winston Churchill. Andrew Jackson. This is why I was always against the removal of Confederate monuments. Because I, along with every sensible person knew, that the racism argument was just an excuse. Their real intention was to strike at the root of our civilization and our history and mold our country in their eyes. And it turned out to be true. Now they are coming for every "evil toxic white male" in history. When even the Founding Fathers are being ostracized, there really is no hope.
