The US continues to escalate its anti-Venezuela measures this week, having announced Monday night that sanctions have grown to an economic embargo, and now that appears to include a naval blockade.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez announced on Wednesday that the United States had seized a cargo ship bound for Venezuela in the Panama Canal. The ship was carrying soy cakes for the production of food.

US officials as yet have not commented, but it’s not clear under what pretext they consider themselves allowed to seize a ship carrying food. The Panama Canal is no longer US territory in the first place, and seizing a food ship bound for Venezuela after spending most of 2019 claiming Venezuelans are starving and in need of food aid seems particularly spiteful.

Vice President Rodriguez condemned the move as “serious aggression,” and accused the Trump Administration of trying to impede Venezuela’s right to food.

Venezuela’s Ambassador to the UN also raised the issue, saying the Security Council needs to prevent US violations. Since the US has veto power at the Security Council, that’s clearly not going to happen, though it will hopefully bring more attention to the matter.

Looks like Ron was right - again.

How much is it costing me to have a Naval Blockade, a Naval Vessel, cross the ocean into a territory that we no longer own, to prevent food delivery? How is this "protecting my freedom" here at home?

The first question is how would a ship be seized “in the Panama Canal”? Where would it be held?

And is this story based solely on a government tweet? I’d want more confirmation from other sources before writing an article about it.

Panama's Canal Authority said on Wednesday that the canal was operating normally and without delays, adding that no ships had been detained in the trade waterway.

The entity posted the statement on Twitter in response to a tweet from Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who said a ship carrying 25,000 tonnes of soy had been detained in the canal.

Good episode, but doesn’t address the issues of verification.

The OP article on RPI is just a republish of an Antiwar.com article. Daniel mentioned he saw it on Antiwar. The only source cited is a government tweet.

Have to call this unverified for now.

US Seizes Ship Delivering Food to Venezuela

Venezuela’s Vicepresident Delcy Rodriguez denounced Wednesday that a ship containing 25 thousand tons of soy-made products has been seized in the Panama Canal due to the U.S. blockade while calling on the United Nations to take action against the "serious aggression" that impede Venezuela "right to food".

"Venezuela denounces before the world that a boat that holds 25 thousand tons of tons of soy, for food production in our country, has been seized in the Panama Canal, due to the criminal blockade imposed by Donald Trump," the vice president said in a tweet.

"Venezuela calls on the UN to stop this serious aggression by DonaldTrump's govt against our country, which constitutes a massive violation of the human rights of the entire Venezuelan people, by attempting to impede their right to food."

In a subsequent tweet, the Venezuelan senior official explained that the owner of the vessel carrying the merchandise of food was informed by the insurance company that it was prevented from moving that cargo to Venezuela.

The shipment seizure comes just days after Trump signed an executive order Monday that imposes a near-total blockade on government assets in that country, which includes an embargo against food suppliers, among other basic inputs. This is the first time in 30 years that Washington has taken such an action against a sovereign country.

Interestingly enough, there have also been several other sources that came out very quickly to deny that this happened, all of them are US fakenews media and none of them include any official statements from the trump regime.

Every “story” quotes the same tweets from a Venezuelan official. That is not an independent or additional verification.

I agree totally. However, it must also be taken into consideration that independent and additional verification has generally proven the elected Venezuelan government's statements to be pretty accurate, more so than those in DC. It also seems to be good enough for Ron Paul to accept as true. I've only seen the one story that quotes the shipment's unnamed insurer, I'm also waiting for more to come out from that direction as well. What do you make of the quick denials that this happened by the fakenews media sources, combined with a lack of statements on the matter by trump / bolton / abrams?

It will be interesting to see how this develops, what or if any independent verification comes out, and what both our government and the Russians have to say about it.

I couldn’t find official denials. I just found the one from marinelink denying that anything had happened in the canal.

I would guess that Trump’s neocons probably are finding many ways to hinder shipments to Venezuela. Using US military forces to stop shipping would be a huge escalation.

Exactly. My speculation is that it occured through Panama acting as a proxy, so as to deny any direct military involvement, which will probably come soon enough. But if that is the case, then the lack of official denials baffles me as well. And don't forget that Panama was also the victim of the US NWO regime change foreign policy back around 1989.
