Will Churchill's Statue Be Next to Fall?

On Gen. George Washington's orders, the Declaration of Independence, signed in Philadelphia, was read aloud to his army. On hearing it, the troops marched to Bowling Green, decapitated and pulled down the statue of George III, and sent the remnants to be melted down into musket balls.
It was a revolutionary act, a symbolic statement. These once-loyal American subjects were now rebels and no longer owed allegiance to the king. They would fight to end his rule in America.
During the recent demonstrations and disorders here, similar acts had about them an aspect of societal rebellion and a repudiation of a heritage.
In Richmond, Virginia, a statue of Christopher Columbus, who generations of American children were raised to revere as the intrepid Italian explorer who discovered the New World, was pulled down and thrown into a lake.
In Boston, the Columbus statue was beheaded.
In a half-dozen states, statues of Confederate generals and soldiers were pulled down. Gov. Ralph Northam promises to remove the huge statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson from their century-old places of honor on Richmond's Monument Avenue.
In Philadelphia, the statue of fabled Italian American cop, police commissioner and mayor, Frank Rizzo, was desecrated and hauled away.
Retired Gen. David Petraeus has written to urge that all army bases bearing the names of Confederate generals, such as Forts Benning, Bragg and Hood, be renamed. Robert E. Lee, who is everywhere at West Point, says Petraeus, was a U.S. soldier who "committed treason."
Nancy Pelosi wants 11 statues, including those of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, and Sen. and U.S. Vice President John Calhoun, removed from the Capitol.
The purge of historical figures has spread to Europe.
The giant statue of King Leopold II in Brussels, who was enriched by the brutalitarian plundering of his Congo colony, has been taken down.
In Bristol, England, a statue of Edward Colston, philanthropist and patron of the city but also a slave trader, was thrown into the harbor.
At Oxford, students are moving to take down the statue of Cecil Rhodes, the archimperialist and founding father of Rhodesia who created as his legacy the Rhodes scholarships for British and American students.
Resumes of all the once-admired great men who discovered, explored and colonized the New World, as well as all those who created and first led the United States, are being investigated to determine how egregiously these men violated the egalitarian and democratist dogmas of modernity.

    Apparently it was an 'accidental':

Winston Churchill's Image Removed from Worldwide Google Results as Statue is Covered in London

Google has apologized after images of Winston Churchill were temporarily unavailable when you searched for the former British prime minister online. The search engine insisted there was nothing untoward after a glitch meant a photo of Churchill had disappeared from their results of "British Prime Ministers" and "WW2 Generals," while other leaders were not.
Google said the photo went down by accident and they quickly sought to address the issue.

Protesters tear down statues of Union general Ulysses S. Grant, national anthem lyricist Francis Scott Key

    By Marty Johnson - 06/20/20

Protesters in San Francisco on Friday toppled the statue of former President Grant, who led the Union Army during the Civil War, in Golden Gate Park.
San Francisco police said that approximately 400 people gathered around 8 p.m. to take down the statue, though no arrests were made, according to NBC Bay Area.
Also torn down in the park on Friday were the statues of St. Junipero Serra and Francis Scott Key, who wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Friday was Juneteenth, a national celebration commemorating the last slaves being freed in Texas on June 19, 1865 — nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
While Grant is widely celebrated as being one of the leading forces who helped the Union win the Civil War, bringing an end to slavery in the U.S., some historians have pointed to his complicated relationship with slavery.

"Grant did in fact own a man named William Jones for about a year on the eve of the Civil War," Sean Kane, interpretations and programs specialist at the American Civil War Museum, said in an article. "In 1859, Grant either bought or was given the 35-year-old Jones, who was in Grant’s service until he freed him before the start of the War."

Kane also noted that Grant married into a slaveholding family that owned dozens of slaves.
After Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter, Grant wrote his father, an abolitionist, saying, “My inclination is to whip the rebellion into submission, preserving all Constitutional rights. If it cannot be whipped any other way than through a war against slavery, let it come to that legitimately. If it is necessary that slavery should fall that the Republic may continue its existence, let slavery go.”

Many on Twitter pushed back against the toppling of Grant's statue in San Francisco.

Maybe Roy Cooper can resign himself and hand over his position to a POC then.

Trump Reportedly To Issue Executive Order Allowing Arrests Of People Removing Or Defacing Statues

    Lisette Voytko
    Updated Jun 23, 2020

After President Trump posted a pair of tweets Tuesday morning that “authorized” arresting people who have torn down monuments in recent weeks under a 2003 federal law, reports have emerged that Trump will sign an executive order that allows the arrest of that same group of people, after protesters attempted to remove a statue of his favorite former commander-in-chief, Andrew Jackson, from the area outside the White House Monday night.

CNN reported that Trump said he plans to issue the executive order to prevent further removal or defacement of statues, and it’s unclear if his earlier Tuesday tweets contain the substance of what will be included in the executive order.

In his tweets, Trump vowed to arrest “anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the US with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act.”

Trump added that his authorization is “effective immediately” but also can be applied “retroactively” to cover other monuments toppled in recent weeks.

“There will be no exceptions!” Trump tweeted.

Trump earlier on Tuesday tweeted about the Jackson memorial removal attempt, calling it “disgraceful vandalism,” and mentioned the Act as well as the potential prison time for violators.

Before Trump posted his tweets, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., wrote in a Monday letter to Attorney General Bill Barr that federal charges should be brought against people tearing down statues, citing the Act as well as the 1968 Anti-Riot Act.

Petition started to rename Winston Churchill High

Joins calls for name changes at Magruder, Richard Montgomery

    By Caitlynn Peetz

    Winston Churchill High School

Montgomery County students have gathered more than 1,000 signatures in a push to rename Winston Churchill High School in Potomac.
The call for change joins a growing list of demands to rename local high schools. Recently, petitions have surfaced asking for Col. Zadok Magruder and Richard Montgomery high schools to also be renamed.
All three petitions point to the schools’ namesakes’ ties to slavery or white supremacy.
Churchill was a member of Parliament in England for more than 60 years and served as the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature and has been praised in the United Kingdom for defending Europe’s democracy from fascism.
But the Churchill High petition says its namesake perpetrated “crimes against humanity” in England.
It says Churchill stole grain from India to feed soldiers in World War II, which contributed to the death of Indians. He also ordered Kenyans into camps “where they were subject to severe torture, malnutrition, beatings,” the petition says, and he defended the use of concentration camps in South Africa.
The petition says Churchill called Indians “beastly” and inferior to white people.
“There is a psychological impact of naming the places we live in and learn after destructive and hateful figures,” the petition says. “We should refuse to glorify the people who murdered and abused our students’ ancestors.”

The Russians and Chinese are flexing their military muscles and ISIS remains on the march — but the leader of the free world on Friday had to take time to explain why he moved a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office seven years ago.

“I love Winston Churchill. I love the guy,” President Obama insisted at a news conference during his visit to London, saying the bust was only moved to another spot in the White House so it could be replaced by a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The kerfuffle broke out after London’s mayor charged that the “part-Kenyan” Obama’s “ancestral dislike of the British empire” led him to toss the bust.
The president responded by reassuring the world that the bust remained safe and sound, the first time he has publicly addressed the non-issue that’s dogged him through two terms in office.

“My private office is called the Treaty Room. And right outside the door of the Treaty Room, so that I see it every day, including on weekends when I’m going into that office to watch a basketball game, I see a bust of Winston Churchill,” the president said.
Obama acknowledged President George W. Bush kept the bust of Churchill in the Oval Office, but said he decided to redecorate.

There have been claims about Biden's ties with segregationists resurfacing in media headlines and NYT headlines like below, though I'm still not convinced such headlines are being pushed deliberately as part of some dog whisteling strategy as some faint mimick of Trump 2016 birtherism outreach strategy to court the "white vote".

Why Some Democrats Worry About the Whiteness of Biden’s Inner Circle

Even as his team adds people of color, allies worry that a lack of diverse viewpoints at the top could come with a steep cost: the possibility of taking for granted his strength with black voters.

As to suggestions behind such media headlines, have not seen latest reporting but won't be too surprised if turned out that Biden's inner most circle had more White Christians than Trump's.

In any case, recent reported polling data and past week's Kanye Exit from Trump camp and Trump's strong praises of Mexican President/USMCA and Hispanic outreach could sugget some sharp tactical changes shaping up in Trump camp's tactics close to 2020 election.

Statue of Black Lives Matter protester replaces toppled UK slave trader in Bristol

An artist has erected a statue of a Black Lives Matter protester in place of a toppled slave trader in the British city of Bristol.
    Key points:

    • Jen Reid was part of the Black Lives Matter protests in Bristol
    • Protesters toppled a statue of a 17th century slave trader and threw it in the harbour
    • A London-based artists designed the statue if Ms Reid to fill the vacant spot

Marc Quinn created the life-size resin and steel likeness of Jen Reid, a protester photographed standing on the plinth after demonstrators pulled down the statue of Edward Colston and dumped it in the harbour in the city of Bristol.
The statue which is titled 'A Surge of Power (Jen Reid)' was erected before dawn on Wednesday (local time), without approval from city officials.
Ms Reid, who came to inspect her likeness, said "it's something that fills me with pride".
"I think it's amazing," she said.
"It looks like it belongs there. It looks like it's been there forever."
Colston was a 17th-century trader who made a fortune transporting enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas on Bristol-based ships.
His money funded schools and charities in Bristol.

Anti-racism protesters in Bristol pulled down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston. The toppling of his statue was part of a worldwide reckoning with racism and slavery sparked by the death of American man, George Floyd, at the hands of police in Minneapolis in May.

Quinn, one of Britain's best-known sculptors, said Ms Reid had "created the sculpture when she stood on the plinth and raised her arm in the air".

"Now we're crystallising it," he said.

Virginia evicts Confederate monuments from its state Capitol

    By ALAN SUDERMANtoday

Workmen place plywood beside the statue of Robert E. Lee in the Old House Chamber inside the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, VA Thursday night, July 23, 2020. All busts and plaques relating to the Confederacy were removed. (Bob Brown/Richmond Times-Dispatch via AP)

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia has removed from its iconic state capitol the busts and a statue honoring Confederate generals and officials. That includes a bronze statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee positioned in the same spot where he stood to assume command of the state’s armed forces in the Civil War nearly 160 years ago.
They are the latest Confederate symbols to be removed or retired in the weeks since the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police sparked a nationwide protest movement.
Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, a Democrat, quietly ordered the Lee statue and busts of generals J.E.B. Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and others removed from the historic Old House Chamber. A moving crew worked through the night Thursday — carefully removing the monuments and their plaques and loading them into a truck and taking them to an undisclosed location.

The stealth approach avoids the possibility of protests or a lawsuit to keep the monuments in place, but may prompt criticism that the monuments were moved without public discussion.
“Virginia has a story to tell that extends far beyond glorifying the Confederacy and its participants,” Filler-Corn said in a statement. “Now is the time to provide context to our Capitol to truly tell the commonwealth’s whole history.”
Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the Virginia State Capitol is the first state capitol to open after the American Revolution and was used as the Confederacy’s Capitol during much of the Civil War.
Filler-Corn’s move to remove the Confederate generals comes a few weeks after Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam ordered the removal of a different Lee monument — a 21-foot (6-meter) bronze equestrian sculpture on Richmond’s historic Monument Avenue.

Another city votes to remove a statue of Christopher Columbus

    By Sheena Jones, CNN

(CNN)The Philadelphia Art Commission, which approves the design and location of construction projects and public art on city property, voted Wednesday to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus in Marconi Plaza.

The commission voted 8-0 with one abstention to remove the statue, with the caveat that the city report back on its process to find the statue a new permanent home every six months.
"I would like to see the sculpture removed from its space for a lot of reasons, one of them is safety for both the sculpture and the public. I would like to see it put into storage and a group of people immediately get together and start figuring out how to get it on private property, " Philadelphia Art and Architecture Commission member Robert Roesch said.

Let me try to defend Pat's view, that was in the context of a militant rebellion and militancy usually involves destruction; currently there is freedom and independence and symbols' significance is mostly symbolic/historic.
In general I would try to err on the side of preserving history, key issue would be if preservation of any historic symbols is also coupled with preservation of any inferior/racist ideologies or not.

On a different note, I tend to see many of recent developments starting with demise of Bush-Cheney era culture/wipe out of many old political culture statues and rise of progressive Obama/Trump/BLM/Justice/Diversity Is Our Strength campaigns of recent years a direct result of and continuation of costly sacrifices made for Iraqi Freedom.

Virginia’s Caroline County courthouse, which was at the center of a landmark civil rights decision involving interracial marriages, will soon lose the Confederate sentry that has stood on the courthouse lawn for 114 years.

The county’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Monday night to remove the statue, which had been erected in 1906 by the Bowling Green United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Jeff Black, supervisor of the Western Caroline District, told WTOP he believes such statues have value, but said, “My problem with it was the location, and the number of people that were upset by the location.”
Under a Virginia law which took effect July 1, the county will entertain offers from groups to take ownership of the statue, which currently overlooks North Main Street in the town of Bowling Green.

Black and other supervisors said they wanted the statue to be handled with respect, but moved someplace else.
”What you’ve seen in some of the other areas, like Richmond, with them being vandalized and torn down — we didn’t want that,” Black said.
During Monday’s public hearing before the vote, several Black community members said the Confederate statue was a constant reminder of slavery and racism.

Especially given that the statue stands on a courthouse lawn, said Black, “It just seems to be inconsistent with the same place that the Loving versus Virginia court case originally started.”

In 1958, Mildred Loving, a woman of color, and her husband, Richard, who was white, were sentenced to a year in prison for marrying each other.

The 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision ruled laws banning interracial marriage violate the equal protection and due process clauses of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
After 30 days, the Board of Supervisors will vote to determine which group will take custody of the statue.

Earlier this month, Albemarle County became the first county in Virginia to vote to remove its Confederate monument.

Loudoun County’s statue was removed after its Board of Supervisors voted to accept the offer from the local Daughters of the Confederacy group to take control of its statue, which also had been on courthouse grounds.

Dozens of Christopher Columbus statues have been removed since June

    By Christopher Brito
    September 25, 2020

At least 33 Christopher Columbus statues have been taken down or in the process of being removed since the renewed Black Lives Matter protests began in late spring, according to a count of local reports. Seeing them come down has been meaningful for Jorge Baracutei Estevez, the cacike, or chief, of the Higuayagua Taíno, a cultural group dedicated to the rescue of Taino culture and language.

"For [the statues] coming down, it's almost like a weight off my chest because it's like a validation," he told CBS News.
Protests have targeted Columbus because he is accused of the genocide of indigenous people. A 2019 study published in the journal Quaternary Science Review estimated that between 1492 and 1600, about 55 million people in the Americas died. The Taíno people were virtually wiped out in the decades after Columbus first arrived on the island of Hispaniola, where Haiti and the Dominican Republic sit today.

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — News 8 has exclusively learned the head of the decapitated Christopher Columbus statue in Waterbury will be placed back onto the statue after the November election.

There’s a referendum on the ballot asking Waterbury residents if the statue should stay in front of the city hall or be moved somewhere else once the head is reattached.
The statue has been the source of controversy and the site of protests this summer.

Many said it’s a racist symbol. Others saying it was a gift to the city in the 80s from Italian-American groups as a way to celebrate the city’s many immigrant groups.
Police say on July 4, Brandon Ambrose from Port Chester, New York, climbed on top of the statue and hammered the head off.

I dunno but Churchill and the British are/were a bunch of jerkoffs.

Forget about the fact that a bunch of American farmers stomped their military.

You see this $#@!ing Churchill strutting around like hes not a complete piece of dog$#@!.

In the Pacific, the Japanese whipped the $#@! out of the British.

And in Europe, the Germans kicked the $#@! out of the British all the way back to England.

    It was $#@!ing laughable.

If not for us, again, from the West and the Russians to the East, Britian would be dust right now with Churchill on all fours fellating Hitler.

Ofcourse the Riussians didnt have much choice, take your chances vs the Germans or get shot by Stalin.

Leftists will replace the statues with something. And then, in a few years, something else. And then again shortly after.

It's not about replacing an idea with another. It's about presenting so rapid a succession of ideas that they cease to exist altogether.
