Really? You mean the way it is used today? You found three examples over an 11 month period of someone combining an adjective and a noun. Not really hard to do, considering many archival news sources have been digitized. I have seen no evidence that "fake news" was a phenomenal term in the 1800s. You'll need many more examples to establish a historical trend regarding that specific term.

The sad reality is the term backfired on media progressives today. They had to grasp through journalism history, diverting today's specific meaning and media use of the term to attack liberty and conservative thought. Simply saying that media critics have always pointed out untrue information in media is not the same as sources like the New York Times using a term today for specific purposes.

And the term "heavy metal" can probably be found in old texts...

More examples and info at the link.
The use of "fake news" was quoted in an example, so if that is accurate then it appears to have been officially joined together a long time ago (unless the Webster description is fake). How widely it was used is in question, and it wasn't popular before the last election.

It was used to kill the story and investigation.

It was later picked up as any Alternate SPIN was Fake News.
Yep. The definition as used in the past election was to identify the mainstream media as publishing propaganda, not fact. Thus fake news.

The left tried to turn that around such that the only "fake news" was alternative right wing outlets, and the MSM is pure as the driven snow.

I would bet that a systematic search of the term "fake news" would have it origins with traditional news sources attempting to vilify its competition. I did a google search on the term, only searching 2016. This is hardly scientific, but maybe a start. Check all the progressive news sources on page one of my search. Check their spin, invoking Russian propaganda and other nonsense.

    The ZippyJuan Group,

Soros is your employer, right? Can you indirectly ask him if he had a hand in pushing the "fake news" spin in various media outlets? Soros funds a lot of things, so I figure he might have done something here.

Maybe you can ask your manager at Soros' Open Society Foundation Projects and they can run it up the chain of command. I would really like to know. Thanks.

Actually, if you go back just a few years, it was used, but it was used to describe comedy such as The Onion and The Daily Show. Different definition, same phrase.
