Religious Divisions Threaten to Further Inflame Ukrainian Civil War

During the American Civil War, in which 620,000 people were slaughtered on the battlefields alone and hundreds of thousands more injured, the organization of the Roman Catholic Church in the American north and south remained united throughout the war and after.
The same cannot be said for the four-year-old civil war in Ukraine, which has deepened existing divisions among Orthodox Christians in the country.
Tensions are rising to the point that the Ukrainian government has been accused of suppressing the celebration of the 1030th anniversary of the coming of Christianity to ancient Rus, the proto-state of Eastern Slavs, which included the territories of modern Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. The government is being blamed for involvement in an effort to eliminate the original historic church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), because of its affiliation with Russia and the word “Moscow” in its name.
The UOC-MP currently includes more than 12,000 of about 18,000 parishes in Ukraine, and is headed by Ukrainian Metropolitan Onuphrius, under the higher spiritual authority of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus, seated in Moscow.
On July 27, a solemn march celebrating the 1030th anniversary of the baptism of Rus by Prince Vladimir the Great of Kiev in 988 AD drew 250,000 faithful of the UOC-MP in Kiev despite the attempt to sabotage it by the U.S.-backed Ukrainian government of President Petro Poroshenko. According to numerous testimonies by UOC-MP’s priests, published in the Ukrainian press, transportation was cut off from outlying parishes and believers were intimidated.
But, if we believe the government, these actions weren’t a suppression of religion, but rather “required by a specific situation.” The Poroshenko regime, formed in the beginning of the civil war that followed the U.S.-backed 2014 bloody coup in the “Euromaidan” uprising, is favoring a split-off of the traditional church by an anti-Moscow church known as the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate ( UOC-KP) headed by a self-proclaimed leader named Patriach Filaret (born, Denisenko).
Denisenko, a former cleric of the Moscow Patriarchate, left the UOC-MP in 1992 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He had lost an ecclesiastical election and tried to form his own church. Denisenko was then excommunicated. His church is not recognized by any of the other members of the international community of Orthodox churches.
There is no single authority in the Orthodox Churches similar to the Roman Catholic pope; rather there are independent or auto-cephalic regional Patriarchs considered equal in authority, with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), regarded as first among equals (primus inter pares) primarily for historic reasons because Constantinople, before its takeover by Turks in 1453, was the center of Orthodox Christianity.
None of these Orthodox Patriarchates recognize either the UOC-KP or “Patriarch” Filaret Denisenko. But now the Poroshenko government, together with Denisenko, is moving to reverse that situation. They have called on Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul to remove the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate and recognize a new, single independent Orthodox church in Ukraine, severing all ties to Moscow.
The single church in the Poroshenko-Denisenko plan would carry the UOC-KP name with the authority, according to Denisenko, to seize all churches, temples, chapels, monasteries and other properties belonging to the UOC-MP.
It would mean dispossessing the historic UOC-MP, which has direct “apostolic” continuity with the 1030-year-old original Kievan church and Christianity in the Eastern Roman empire, once brought there by Christ’s own disciples. UOC-MP said they would not pray in church together with the excommunicated Denisenko.

The petition to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to approve the invention of a new “united” Ukrainian church that eliminates the UOC-MP would violate this sacred apostolic succession, says the Moscow Patriarchate. The UOC-MP has also protested that neither Poroshenko nor the Rada are empowered to ask Bartholomew to change the church’s organization in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday said the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarchate's decision to recognise the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was a "provocation" backed by Washington. He described the move as "provocation by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, undertaken with direct public support from Washington" during a media interview, according to a transcript of the exchange on the foreign ministry's website.
"Interfering in Church life is forbidden by law in Ukraine, in Russia and, I hope, in any normal state," he said.
The Holy Synod chaired by the Patriarch of Constantinople in Istanbul on Thursday said it had agreed to recognise the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has historically operated under Moscow's umbrella.
The move was met with fury by the Patriarch of Moscow, who would effectively lose influence over thousands of parishes if they decide to split off and join the new independent church.

The Russian Orthodox Church on Friday called on the United Nations, the leaders of Germany and France, the pope and other spiritual leaders to protect believers in Ukraine in the face of pressure on Moscow-affiliated clerics.Ukraine's Orthodox clerics will gather for a meeting Saturday that is expected to form a new, independent Ukrainian church, and Ukrainian authorities have ramped up pressure on priests to support the move. The Ukrainian church has been part of the Russian Church for centuries, while enjoying broad autonomy, but Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has pushed for the creation of an independent church.
The newly formed community would then be expected to receive independence from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Istanbul-based institution considered the so-called "first among equals" of leaders of the world's Orthodox Churches that has already drafted a charter for an independent Ukrainian church.
The Russian Church said on Friday that its Patriarch Kirill has sent a letter to the U.N. secretary-general, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other spiritual leaders, urging them to help protect the clerics, believers and their faith in Ukraine.
Merkel's spokeswoman and the German foreign ministry spokesman said they didn't immediately have any information on the letter.
As church tensions have grown, Ukraine's Security Service has searched Russian Orthodox churches and the homes of Russian Orthodox priests in several cities. The agency also has summoned dozens of priests for questioning.
Ukrainian authorities have sought to portray Russian Orthodox priests in Ukraine as supporting Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, claims that the clerics have rejected.
Kirill's letter accused the Ukrainian government of hate speech and pressuring the clerics to take part in the Saturday gathering.
"The numerous instances of discrimination against the Ukrainian Church (of the Moscow Patriarchate) give us the reason to fear far worse infringements of the rights and legitimate interests of Orthodox believers," the letter said.
The Moscow Patriarchate's Ukrainian Church said on Friday that the security services forcibly delivered one senior cleric to Kiev, reportedly for a conversation with the president.
In Kiev, about 100 people led by a Moscow-affiliated cleric were holding prayers near the Ukrainian parliament Friday morning to protest the creation of a new church.
Some voiced fears that authorities will seize churches from the communities under the Moscow patriarchate and give them to the new church.

Ukrainian Orthodox Christian priests are poised to select a leader for their newly independent church, cementing a split from the previous Russian hierarchy in a step that’s further straining relations between the two former allies.

President Petro Poroshenko is portraying the church schism as an “issue of national security” and is hoping it will help revive rock-bottom popularity before elections in March. His campaign slogan is ‘Army, language, faith.’“The independent status of the Ukrainian church is another declaration of independence,” he said this month.

Choosing a leader for a new independent church to end the dominance the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchy isn’t just a matter of regional political tensions. While strained relations have accelerated the process, the move marks the culmination of almost three decades of government and diplomatic efforts.
The Russian Orthodox Church has about 12,000 parishes across Ukraine and a monastery listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though support has weakened amid the recent conflict, which has killed more than 10,000 people. Ukraine says most parishes will convert to the new structure though Moscow contests the extent of the likely swing.
For Russia, as well as ceding property and influence, the split essentially means losing the spiritual home of its own church, in Kiev, where the state of Kievan Rus’ adopted Orthodoxy in the 10th century, long before Russia became a separate country.
“The Russian Orthodox Church isn’t the Russian state -- it’s bigger than Russia and Ukrainian orthodoxy is part of Russian orthodoxy,” said Alexander Volkov, spokesman for Russian Patriarch Kirill. “That’s why this attempt to take away the Ukrainian church from the Russian church is a spiritual, historical and religious tragedy.”
Saturday’s vote on Ukraine’s new church leader will take place in Saint-Sofia Cathedral in central Kiev. In a sign of the tensions around the issue, Ukraine’s SBU Security Service said it will step up safety measures in case of provocations aimed at inciting violence. Russia complains that priests loyal to its branch of the church are being harassed by the SBU.

Over 1,000 believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church rallied outside the country's parliament Thursday to protest its demand that their church's name is changed to reflect its ties to Moscow.Parliament passed a bill earlier Thursday demanding that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church explicitly indicate its link to the Moscow Patriarchate in its name. The church rejected the demand as unconstitutional.
The Ukrainian church has been part of the Russian Orthodox Church for centuries, but a bitter tug-of-war following Russia's annexation of Crimea has encouraged moves within Ukrainian orthodoxy to create a separate church with no direct links to Moscow.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has strongly pushed for the creation of such a church, and on Saturday a new church independent from Moscow was created.
Ukrainian authorities have sought to portray the Moscow-linked church in Ukraine as supporting Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine — claims that have been rejected by its clerics.
"The church directed from the aggressor country must reflect that in its name," said Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy.
Priests and parishioners who rallied outside the parliament building denounced the decision.
One of the protesters, Father Vadim, said that "our church has faced purges and humiliation."
"Our only guilt is that we pray for the entire Orthodox Church and mention (Moscow) Patriarch Kirill in our prayers," he said.
Father Kliment, the church's spokesman, said it's not going to meet the parliament's demand that he described as unlawful. "The talk about the name change sounds clownish," he said.

A fight broke out during Ukrainian parliament after a bill was passed demanding that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church explicitly indicate its link to the Moscow Patriarchate in its name.
In total, 240 politicians voted in favour of the draft law, which resulted in punches being thrown.
Bloc Party member, Nestor Shufrych removed a poster which labelled politician Viktor Medvedchuk “Putin's agent.”
Opposition party member, Yuriy Bereza then punched him in the face, before other members piled in.
Andriy Parubiy, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, called for a break following the bust-up.

The leader of the new independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church was enthroned in a ceremony in Kiev on Sunday, formalising a break with the Russian Orthodox Church that has enraged Moscow.During the three-hour event in the gold-decked 11th-century Saint Sophia Cathedral, Metropolitan Yepifaniy became head of the Church, having been elected by bishops last year.
The 40-year-old is a critic of Moscow's religious influence in Ukraine and has helped organise humanitarian aid for Kiev's army in its struggle against Russian-backed separatist movements.
President Petro Poroshenko, who had promised an independent church ahead of this year's presidential election, attended the ceremony along with other top officials.
Last week, he finally confirmed he was running for re-election in the March 31 poll.
Poroshenko described Sunday's ceremony as the "completion" of the process to create the Church, in comments carried by Ukrainian TV channels as part of a live broadcast.
The new church would be independent of the state, he said.

The former head of Ukraine's breakaway independent church held a rare conference of clerics Thursday with the aim of restoring his religious leadership, threatening the future of Ukraine's new unified Orthodox Church.Archbishop Filaret, 90, brought together some 100 clerics in Kiev's Saint Vladimir Cathedral, in a bid to annul a decision that merged the Kiev patriarchy that he previously led with another Orthodox church.
The joining of the churches paved the way for the creation of a new unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church independent of Moscow created last year -- a historic decision after Moscow controlled the Ukrainian church for more than 300 years.
Despite the meeting threatening the unity of the new church, Filaret on Thursday said "there will nevertheless be an independent Church".
The newly unified church said the meeting had no official character and that it had no legal or ecclesiastical value.
In a statement, it called on Filaret and his supporters to "stop undermining the unity of the Church and of the Ukrainian people".
The charismatic Filaret had been widely tipped to become the head of the united church but a Metropolitan, Yepifaniy, 40, was chosen to the post last December.

Last month Filaret accused the young head of the church of governing single-handedly despite earlier agreements.
"There was an agreement that I continue to govern the church in Ukraine together with Yepifaniy while he will represent the church abroad," he told reporters.
He claimed that Ukraine's former president Petro Poroshenko was part of the agreement.
Filaret, a former bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, was excommunicated by Moscow for starting a dissident church in Ukraine in 1992 after the breakup of the Soviet Union. He was rehabilitated by the Constantinople Patriarchate last year.

An archbishop of the new church, Yevrastiy Zorya, told the media that Filaret's actions would not make the Constantinople patriarchy reverse its decision.
