Thread: Why's modern architecture boring?

    Why's modern architecture boring?

Why's it so functional and utilitarian? There's no dignity in modern architecture. Everything looks like initech work inside, or smelly hipsters squat upstairs.

Because they plan to tear them down in 30 years anyway.

They replaced the mcdonalds near me, with a brand new mcdonalds of what appears to be identical size. I saw nothing wrong with the old building, but they didn't like it apparently. Same with schools, they virtually abandoned the old highschool, sure it was old, but it worked, it's still standing there mostly empty, they rent out space in it. People seem to like new construction for the sake of it.

    Art, music, literature...same thing.

Harsh, jangling, abrasive, void of substance and meaning and talent, bringing little if any joy and enlightenment.

This style's how paranoid, utilitarian minds see people and the world. Just by looking at their buildings, I can guess the architects are millenarian doomsday cultists, be they Marxist or post-capitalist - whatever the flavor of the day is. Post-human? Nothing can be wasted, decadence is evil, men are a function of products/words/materials... was it protestantism that did this?

Yeah, but you know what each of these examples is, at the very least?

I definitely prefer the Art Deco look BUT I think it depends on the location and it's purpose.

Just a quick note here, Art Deco is considered modern architecture.
The trends OP is complaining about have been around since the early 1920s. If anything, today’s styles are more optimistic compared to the reinforced-concrete brutalism of the 60s and 70s. They certainly make more use of light and open space, even if they tend to be boxy.

Welp, ya learn something new everyday.

I still think it depends on the location/application. It's jarring to walk into a place thats purpose doesn't match it's facade or blend into the landscape.

I agree about geography being a huge factor. The new styles look jarring in most suburbs, but in the area of Philly I’m currently in, the post-postmodernist style is all the rage right now. I think it has to do with the current generation’s embrace of rapid change, functionality and disposability. Sort of like if IKEA started designing actual buildings instead of furniture.
