Niklas Krämer spotted a thief on a surveillance camera. He and a colleague then managed to catch him. But now the two colleagues are charged with unlawful detention, Swedish newspaper Expressen reports.
25-year-old Niklas and his colleagues were robbed of diesel several times a week. Last year they managed to seize and hold down one of the thieves while waiting for the police.
Now they face charges themselves for unlawful detention. “Who is the villain here, we or the guy who stole from us?” says Niklas.
Time and again his workplace has been hit by shameless thieves – two of whom were released even though they were arrested and confessed their crime.
On 19 February last year it happened again and Niklas managed to film and catch the thief together with a colleague.
But when the prosecutor now brings charges it is not the thief that is at the centre. Instead, the two colleagues are suspected of unlawful detention.
When the thief was caught on camera, around midnight, Niklas and his colleague went looking for him together with the police. They found his car, but the thief was gone.
When he returned early the following morning to pick up his vehicle they blocked his path, and when he refused to stop they chose to stop him with force.
He was yelling and screaming. He threw the car door open and tried to run. “We knew it was him who had stolen from us and wanted the police to arrest him so we wrestled him to the ground”, says Niklas.
He was strong and we felt that we needed to get him under control. We searched our pockets and found cable ties which we use in our work. So we tied his arms and legs behind his back with those, and then I called the police.
According to the indictment the local police arrived about an hour later and seized the suspect. He admitted the theft, but later left the country and the preliminary investigation was dropped.
