    China trade deal dead

I have so many feels right now...

Assuming one believes there ever really was a "trade deal" being negotiated, instead of other agenda issues being hashed out under the cover story of a trade deal, ZH is reporting that the China trade deal that's supported markets for the last year+ is dead. Tariffs incoming so hold on to your wallets as prices rise. I personally think it's just the natural consequence of dollar global standard being dropped (where to export inflation now??), instead of any tariffs being implemented, but draw your own conclusions.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-...325bn-goods-be

So much for months and months of constant leaks, headlines, tweets, and press reports that US-China trade talks are going great, and are imminent amid an ocean of "optimism" (meant solely to sucker in amateurs into the most obvious bull headfake since 1987).

Just after noon on Sunday, President Trump tweeted that 10% tariffs paid by China on $200 billion in goods will rise to 25% on Friday, and that - contrary to what he himself and his chief economist, Larry Kudlow has said for months, talks on a trade deal have been going too slowly.

And, just to underscore his point, Trump also threatened to impose 25% tariffs on an additional $325 billion of Chinese goods “shortly.”

....of additional goods sent to us by China remain untaxed, but will be shortly, at a rate of 25%. The Tariffs paid to the USA have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China. The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 5, 2019

With the tariff rate on numerous goods originally set at 10% and set to more than double in 2019, Trump postponed that decision after China and the US agreed to sit down for trade talks; following Trump's tweet it is now confirmed that trade talks have hit an impasse and that escalation will be needed to break the stalemate.

It was as recently as Friday that Vice President Mike Pence told CNBC that Trump remained hopeful that he could strike a deal with China (at the same time as he was urging for a rate cut from the Fed).

Curiously, on Wednesday, the White House - clearly hoping to sucker in even more naive bulls to buy stocks at all time highs - said the latest round of talks had moved Beijing and Washington closer to an agreement. Press secretary Sarah Sanders said, “Discussions remain focused toward making substantial progress on important structural issues and re-balancing the US-China trade relationship.”

In recent weeks there were multiple reports that China and U.S. were close to a trade deal, and an agreement could come as soon as Friday. Major sticking points the U.S. and China have been intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers. There has also been disagreement as to whether tariffs be removed or remain in place as an enforcement mechanism.

While it was not clear why Trump has decided to escalate his tariff policy, the most obvious explanation is that for a White House, which has been obsessed with pushing the S&P to record levels, this was the last lever it had at its disposal. And now that the S&P is back at all time highs, the lies can end, if only for the time being.

Stock market futures hit hard after Trump tweets tariff threat on Chinese goods

President Donald Trump, despite repeated claims by the White House that trade talks with Beijing were progressing, announced Sunday on Twitter that tariffs on $200
billion of Chinese goods will increase next week to 25% from 10%.

“The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!” Trump wrote in the surprise announcement.

He also threatened that the U.S. will impose 25% tariffs on another $325 billion of Chinese goods, just days after Vice President Mike Pence told CNBC that Trump was hopeful he could hammer out a deal with China.

At last check, futures on the Dow YMM9, -1.65% were off by nearly 400 points, or 1.4%, while gold GCM9, +0.29% was moving higher.

Maybe it's time the real economy took precedence over the stock market and the American worker took precedence over globalist oligarchs.

China considers canceling trade talks with U.S. after Trump vows new tariff hike: WSJ

China is considering canceling trade talks with the United States this week after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to hike tariffs on China, the Wall street Journal reported on Sunday citing a source.

Earlier on Sunday, Trump announced he would hike U.S. tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods this week and target hundreds of billions more soon.

The decision on whether talks will be canceled depends on whether Vice Premier Liu He goes to Washington as planned, the journal reported, citing a source, who added that canceling talks would conform to China’s strategy of not negotiating under threat.
Trump has been claiming since February that he believed a trade deal could be finalized "soon". He initially said by sometime in March it would be finished. Just before his latest round of tariffs, he said it could be just a week away- maybe as soon as this Friday. The tariffs may scuttle an possible deal.

Given Trump's record for dropping agreements, I would be very unwilling to enter into one with him. His word cannot be trusted.

    LOL

Given the nature of the agreements other countries have made with us we would be better off if nobody would make agreements with us.

That's probably one of the dumbest comments I've ever read. Do you know how many hundreds of billions of dollars in deals he has made in his life?

How many of the deals that Trump "dropped" were deals that he made and both sides were working within the agreed paramaters?

    How about ZERO??

The only agreements he has dropped were sweetheart deals made by corrupt politicians and agreements where one side was not working within the agreed parameters. That has nothing to do with "his word".

How many deals has the "Great Negotiator" reached since taking office? NAFTA which was the "worst deal ever" (he calls all agreements that) became USMCA which was the old NAFTA with Canada agreeing to buy a few more gallons of milk from us.

Some of you have no idea how this all works.

The good cop/bad cop routine is mainly a ploy by Chinese Communist Party high up corrupt officials getting rich off the stock markets.

CCP gets aggressive, plays tough on negotiations, dumps their stock to cause the plunge.

    buys the dips
then goes back into passive position riding the stock market up.

    Rinse, repeat.
