November Car Sales Could Hit Pace Not Seen Since 2008

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...038631488.html

Some analysts estimate November sales could hit an annualized selling pace of 15.2 million cars and light trucks—the strongest single monthly showing since 2008.

Next year, U.S. sales are projected to reach between 14.5 million and just over 15 million cars and light trucks, a third consecutive year of growth. U.S. sales this year are projected to hit 14.4 million vehicles.
The owner of an 11-year-old, six cylinder Ford Explorer that averages about 15 miles on a gallon of gasoline could replace it with a 2013 Explorer that gets up to 23 mpg with a four-cylinder, turbocharged "EcoBoost" model and use the difference to help fund a loan, say car makers.

Or the owner of a 18 year old 8 cylinder Ford E-150 that averages about 8 miles on a gallon of gasoline could keep it since it still runs fine, and say "Screw the loan." Oh wait, that's me.

I hear you on that. I'm driving my car until it dies.

At any rate, if you ever have the time, you should check out all the goodies on new car lots nowadays. Some killer cars out there at very affordable prices with rockin' MPG ratings. The next few years are going to be great for new car shoppers. Ford's got a new 999cc engine it will bring stateside - word is that it can do 50mpg with 123hp using the EcoBoost tech they have.

I've been going for pleasure recently. Fun to see how the industry is changing.

I am not a gadget person. I don't even have a cell phone, and I disconnected my anti-lock brakes as soon as I figured out how. I'd like my next car to be a '70's muscle car, or a 'Vette or something.

Absolutely no interest in the new cars, especially with the GOP nonsense that seems to be standard now.

According to a recent study from Jato Dynamics, a leading provider of automotive business intelligence, U.S. cars emit 85 percent more carbon dioxide and consume twice as much fuel as European and Japanese cars. The average year-to-date fuel consumption figure for cars, minivans and SUVs in the U.S. market stands at 22.6 mpg, compared with 40.3 mpg in Europe and 40.6 mpg in Japan. Those are staggering differences, and they make us wonder why it will take American automakers until 2020 to reach a mandated average fuel-efficiency rating of 35 mpg, when European and Japanese automakers already do. (That's food for thought, folks.)

why can't america get out of the grip of big oil ?

    as a note i drive a 1997 nissan 240sx ,112k miles , rear wheel drive , timing chain ( not a belt ) , adjustable dist timing ( 60's tech ), 24mpg city 30 mpg at 70 mph , love this car.

a lot of the new sales could be because of sandy.

Their Ecoboost engine is awesome. Ford's got an amazing lineup of vehicles now. The new Escapes and Explorers, particularly at the highest trim level, are excellent.

Really, a lot of cars, trucks, and SUVs are great now. Technology rules.

It really is. Things are getting better, rapidly. It's amazing how quickly the American manufacturers are starting to catch up to the rest of the world, and it is also amazing that the rest of the world continues to press forward.

That companies like Kia and especially Mazda are putting out great vehicles at great prices is excellent for the consumer. Toyota still puts out a quality product, as do Honda and Nissan (I love my G37!). Over the past few years, Volkswagon and Volvo have each done impressive things with their automobiles, and Jeep has reinvented its brand with a quality it had previously lacked.

You just can't beat technology and competition!

    Oh goody!

First home building/buying is going "up"...........Now cars are being built and sold at "2008 levels"...

I'm sure glad we're living in this thriving economy where everyone is flush and life is grand..

It'd be interesting to see just how many of these new car purchases were for either government fleets or fleets funded by tax dollars....

Oh dear lord, why? They don't make them like they used to, and thank God for that.

Cars now are much safer, they have better fuel economy, and if speed is what you're going for, they can accelerate faster, too -- all with more bells and whistles inside, and a more comfortable ride.

Someone in this thread mentioned Sandy as a potential cause for this. That point should not be overlooked. A lot of dealerships had to completely restock -- tens of thousands of cars were damaged in the storm.

And that's why muscle cars continue to drop in value and folks are willing to pay more than list for the new "hot rods"..

Buying old muscle cars is what middle aged people do to recapture their youth. It's just silly.

I got my new G37 at an excellent price and would NEVER even consider trading it for an old corvette, mustang, camero, etc. I can go 0-60 in just over 4-seconds while sitting on heated seats in a car that gets 26MPG on a highway, listening to MP3s and a navigation system, experiencing a comfortable ride and being surrounded by airbags. There is literally no reason to prefer old cars, other than style and vanity. They're inferior to new cars the same way almost all old technology is inferior to new technology.

The technology is inferior, but there's something to be said for being able to drive a profitable investment....

People said the same thing about houses during that bubble.
Cars are not investments. Buy one that appeals to you, meets your needs, and fits your budget, but never assume that it will net you a profit.

Have you been to Europe? Then think about this: their cars suck. THey're little tiny boxes on wheels. We are a larger people, in a larger country, and we prefer cars with muscle and real horsepower.

THe government is quashing those cars. Quashing the rights of people to drive what the hell they want, but you're cheering them on because it means you get to feel like you're scoring some big victory against big oil?

    Liberals suck.

Says a guy who's already driving my Grandma's car.

    It's just silly.

THere is literally no reason to insult people for having a different opinion than you do about the cars that they prefer.

$#@! you and your opinion. What the hell is a G37? Sounds like a pussy car. Heated seats? Mp3 player? Give me something that has actual bass, thank you. I doubt it has any real style - no girl is ever going to walk up ogle that Daddy's car. Unless she's looking for a Daddy, I suppose.

My insurance costs $60 a month. I can buy a brand new car with what I save there alone. You're just participating in planned obsolescence driven to consumers, spending lots of money for crap that nobody actually needs, but you consider yourself intellectually superior. Limousine liberal bull$#@!.

Navigation system? Big Brother thanks you for your participation.

Again, there is literally no legitimate reason to insult people for having a different opinion than you do about the cars that they prefer. But that's what you opened with? Apparently Inifniti drivers are $#@!s. But I actually already knew that. (I did have to look up a "G37" - that explained it).

I wish they'd drop a little more ! I like a car that has some style. The new cars have none of that, with the possible exception of the high end sports cars that I'll never be able to afford.

After stating this, you go on to do the same. Classy.

    $#@! you and your opinion.
Spoken like an ill-informed idiot. Once again, classy.

What the hell is a G37?
    See above.

    Sounds like a pussy car.

    Whatever that means.

Heated seats? Mp3 player? Give me something that has actual bass, thank you.
So, you've never seen one or heard one. But hey, don't let ignorance stand in the way of a boisterous opinion!

I doubt it has any real style - no girl is ever going to walk up ogle that Daddy's car. Unless she's looking for a Daddy, I suppose.
*looks around* What in the hell are you talking about, and what does this have to do with anything?

My insurance costs $60 a month.
Yeah, and mine is $80 a month. Boy, what a huge savings you have there!

I can buy a brand new car with what I save there alone.
Yeah, that $20/month brand new car is really something!

You're just participating in planned obsolescence driven to consumers, and consider yourself somehow intellectually superior?
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I'll put 200,000 miles on this car, at a minimum.

Navigation system? Big Brother thanks you for your participation.
Take off the tinfoil hat, princess. Your cell phone has the same effect. Big Brother thanks you for your participation.

What's wrong with style as a reason? I shave, get haircuts, buy clothes, etc, and style/vanity has at least something to do with my choices.

Also, I was considering buying a Jeep once. The newer ones had a history of spontaneously jumping out of gear and running over people. So, there's one reason for you.

Which G37 goes 0-60 in under 5 seconds? I suspect my car would beat a G37 to 60, with 4 people in it.

A 2011 belt is probably every bit as good as your 1997 chain. Nothing wrong with those cars, but materials technology has come a long way since 97.

Nothing at all wrong with style as a preference. Just don't pretend the car is superior, just because it is older. That is absurd.

    under 5 seconds?
Yes, under 5 seconds is more accurate. Apologies.

Oh, so it's ok for you to insult me and my tastes, but not ok when I turn the tables? Poor baby.

Here's a hint - I like books, camping, baking, food, gardening and sex. And old cars. Sex in old cars, with big back seats. You might say that I can heat my own seats.

    Thanks for asking.

There are many older cars that I would say are superior to newer cars, even in the same model sometimes. That's not just my opinion, but there are plenty of car experts who would say the same thing. Something being newer doesn't make it superior, either.

I'd love to have a '74 beetle, if I had the money for a second vehicle and knew of one that wasn't rusted out. Great cars, simple to work on, reliable, fun to drive, decent fuel economy, etc.
