US Mint solved the silver problem for good 1965 and copper problem in 1982 . In 1866 the nickel was rolled out , replacing the five cent silver pc. , by 1862 hardly any 3 Cent silver pc.'s were made and 1873 to 1889 the 3 cent was nickel as well .

Probably my favorite Seated Liberty Half design is the 1853 with Arrows . I like the Reverse as Rays were added around the Eagle .

In 1857 they reduced the size of the Cent . Up to that time the Half Cent was larger than the size of the current Cent .

The first year of the nickel ( Shield nickel 1866 - 1883 ), 1866 , also has Rays on the Reverse . The front has a design like the Two Cent pc ( 1864 -1873) .

Yes , price on that commemorative silver dollar unlike most moderns has soared . Nice coin though .

True most commemorative sell for melt- the buffalo goes for $200 even though its not a rare mintage
Its the design that makes it desirable
