    It's a form of cryptography that helps to keep the blockchain secure and prevent the "double spending" problem with electronic currencies to ensure that a person cannot double-spend their crypto to two people at once before the network realizes what is going on.

    They started with high end graphics processors in the early days, but now use ASIC chips to certify each transaction by solving a complex cryptographic pattern, essentially guessing, and whichever miner solves the block of transactions first gets a reward. Since you will probably never get a reward with an individual mining machine, they are typically pooled into a mining pool that pays out the miners based on how much work they do for the pool.
