Red yeast rice/Lovastatin/FDA--things that aggravate me.

Someone posted a link to an article that mentioned the FDA's banning of red yeast rice because it naturally contains "lovastatin." I did some research and it irked me to no end.

Okay, here's the synopsis of the development:

It has been used in Chinese medicine since at least 800 A.D. for various purposes and to remove "blood blockages."

Some American pharmaceutical company gets ahold of this stuff and extracts the specific chemical that lowers cholesterol, goes through the FDA, it's good stuff, few side-effects and the patent goes through.

Now, since red rice yeast is sold as a supplement (and has a controlled drug in it,) the FDA calls it illegal and bans it's sale. Allegedly, the only supplements of it that you can get do not contain the statin any longer. It is banned in it's original form.

This is absolutely outrageous. I'll be doing more research, mostly on how to ferment it yourself. Poor people in this country have to pay a manufacturer to produce the drug, when it's something that you can get from an herbalist and has been used for over a thousand years. Absolutely ridiculous.

Thanks to whomever posted that original article.

P.S. My mother (she's a nurse) talked to her pharmacist about it, and he confirmed that the supplement, in its original form did actually lower cholesterol. I know that's second-hand info, but I'm just sayin'.

What's next, they ban rolled oats or any form of oats, because it can lower cholesterol?

this kind of crap really pisses me off, what are they going to ban next?

good thing aspirin isn't a script, they'd ban willow trees......

Ya know what? I've moved on from being pissed to being vengeful. There is absolutely no reason that we can not make these supplements ourselves. They prey on ignorance.

Soapmistress is just as much of a chemist as I am (where's she been anyways?), if she can make soap and I can make stuff blow up, I can teach other people how to do this stuff. I've had enough of the government banning chemicals. I can't even get ammonia to clean with anymore.

This is truly wrong and disturbing. This is the equivalent of a pharmaceutical company patenting the "drug" that cures scurvy (vitamin C) and getting the FDA to ban the sale of all citrus fruit and other foods that contain vitamin C.

    From the FDA (www.fda.gov/consumer/updates/redyeastrice081007.html):
"FDA testing revealed the products contain lovastatin, the active ingredient in Mevacor, a prescription drug approved for marketing in the United States as a treatment for high cholesterol.

These red yeast rice products are a threat to health because lovastatin can cause severe muscle problems leading to kidney impairment."

How much do you want to bet that red yeast rice, in its original form as nature intended, does not cause the "severe muscle problems leading to kidney impairment" side effects that the Mevacor does? That's usually what happens when a pharmaceutical tries to manufacture the active ingredient of a plant, while ignoring all the other chemicals that are usually included with it in nature; you end up with nasty side effects.

Selling "red yeast rice" growing kits might make a nice little home business. It sounds to me like the lovastatin is a product of the yeast, so you should be able to sell the yeast itself, although you should expect some trouble from the FDA eventually. This is the yeast you need: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monascus_purpureus

I'm not at all surprised that you can make almost anything, you're handy that way.

All of this sort of info on how to make things like this is perfect material for the new "Freedom Living" forum. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65

    Liberation

You people are great! Being self-sufficient is more than just growing your own food. It is medicine. It is clothing. It is weapons. Etc. etc.

I believe this country is entering a time of great austerity. Our culture and our values are going to be severely tried and found wanting. The things our popular culture has taught our people to value will be found largely useless and the skills and attitudes that have been regarded as quaint or obsolete or even kooky will be revealed to be exactly those skills and attitudes that will prevail.

I canned my first jar of pickled beats today and attached a 55 gallon drum to my rain gutters. Tomorrow I will finish the soil prep in my garden and the nesting box to go into the chicken coop. And Monday I will watch the stock market to see if the time has come.

My girlfriend broke up with me because she thinks I have become too serious. She doesn't want to hear the bad news. I set up a garden for her and convinced her to invest in some silver coins. So she is better off than she was. Now she can go find a sensitive guy who likes to socialize and party all the time. Hope he knows what to do when the grid goes down.

    I feel like Noah. Ahahahahaha!

By the way, niacin is good for controlling cholesterol AND it stimulates growth hormone release which is good for immune strength and healing. First they will try and get you on a statin drug. If you insist on niacin, they will try and get you to buy a prescription "time release" version. Screw that. Straight niacin is fine. If the flushing is too intense, take an aspirin half an hour before for the first two weeks until your body adjusts.

    Now I'm rambling. Sorry!

Pretty soon chocolate will be on the chopping block of the FDA. Chocolate contains soo many different kinds chemical compounds that have physiological effects on the body. Theobromine, caffeine, phenethylamine, anandamide, tryptophan. These have been linked to stimulating release of dopamine, serotonin, endrophins. Chocolate is believed to have links to possibly lowering blood pressure, improving memory, reduce the risk of heart disease & cancer, its an aphrodisiac. SO every now & then, indulge in a little dark chocolate, its good for you, BUT in moderation, please.

I can see it now on FOX News: "DEA raids Nestle headquarters & places Hershey, PA in the Axis of Evil."

Just flagged it. The admin will look at it. Check your pm's regularly (little box on the top right of your screen).

By the way, I just got my patent on sunlight. Anyone who henceforth gets vitamin D or a natural tan owes me royalties.

Thank you. I actually registered the nick that I wanted under a different e - mail address when I noticed that I got the wrong one (to ensure no one else takes it, just in case, which is unlikely). You can delete that one and change this one if you want (or just approve that one and I will then ditch this one and then, if you want, you can delete the wrong one. It doesn't matter).

You guys can write the FDA about this (though it probably won't do very much good unless many people did it).

Now a pharmaceutical corporation wants to outlaw vitamin B6 and make it a drug.

Health Freedom Warning: Drug Company Seeks to Outlaw Vitamin B6 to Protect Pharma Profits

The latest attack against vitamins comes from an FDA petition filed by Medicure Pharma, Inc., which has astonishingly asked the FDA to ban the sale of Vitamin B6!

Vitamin B6, of course, is a naturally-occurring nutrient found in numerous vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Its natural form is called pyridoxal 5'-phosphate or P5P for short. It's an essential nutrient for expectant mothers, growing children and anyone who wishes to be healthy. It's absolutely crucial for healthy blood cell function, and it's used in over 100 enzymatic reactions involving protein metabolism.

    I also found this interesting

Within this 800 page rule the FDA states, "We find that this final rule will have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities…. Establishments with above average costs, and even establishments with average costs, could be hard pressed to continue to operate. Some of these may decide it is too costly and either change product lines or go out of business…. 140 very small [less than 20 employees] and 32 small dietary supplement manufacturers [less than 500 employees] will be at risk of going out of business…. costs per establishment are proportionally higher for very small than for large establishments….The regulatory costs of this final rule will also discourage new small businesses from entering the industry."
    http://dprogram.net/2008/08/19/fda-a...min-companies/

I don't think the FDA should artificially raise the price of vitamin supplements. People need treatments to cost less, not more, and there is no reason why the free market shouldn't be allowed to give people decent supplements at a decent price.

This FDA rule will directly raise the price of dietary supplements for all consumers. The FDA acknowledges this and says "We expect that the majority of these costs will be borne by consumers of dietary supplements, who will likely respond to the increase in prices by reducing consumption."
It is noteworthy that fascist governments of the past have eliminated health freedom and health options as a necessary condition to enslave and brainwash a population.
    ...
Any company that can afford to comply with the costs and regulations of this new FDA rule can be targeted and eliminated at will by the FDA. In essence, the FDA is seeking to make the dietary supplement industry document every phase of production, including expensive testing at multiple points in the production process. Massive recordkeeping will be required, including all customer complaints and returns for any reason!...No doubt, the FDA will impose user fees as an additional charge so that FDA agents will have the funding required to enforce the regulations.
    ...
Consumer safety could readily be guaranteed by simply having all companies test their final products for purity and potency. Instead of this simple approach the FDA has gone to the extreme of burdening the dietary supplement industry with regulations in excess of the drug industry!
What's next, are the FDA going to control what chemicals an apple can contain. Because apples contain vitamin C, a substance that cures scurvy, is it ok for the FDA to demand that apples containing vitamin C be banned (because it has medicinal use)? But it's ok for the government to put a stop to good nutrition, but not to cigarettes.

I keep hoping and praying that the FDA will be taken down somehow. I can't believe what they are doing in the name of protecting us.

I am very allergic to aspartame and the other day I brought some yogurt and it had it in it. Most products have a symbol on it that tells people like me that a product has it in it. This yogurt did not have that symbol on the package so obviously a company does not have to disclose on the front label anymore that a product has aspartame in it. I have not been feeling well for several days. It really pisses me off sooooooooooooo bad the way they put aspartame even in toothpaste.

I finally made a petition to legalize red yeast rice containing more than just trace amounts of lovastatin.

Water cures dehydration, is it a drug now?

The FDA might think that foods are not intended to be used as medication. Water may not have been intended to cure dehydration, but it does. Should we ban it?

  32. #28
Strange, I would think that all of the cures mentioned in this thread as being suppressed or in the process of being suppressed by the FDA would fall under the category of "nutracueticals", and be outside of their control.

A sister company of my company makes several supplements that have strong anti-cancer properties (selenomethionine), and they are able to sell them over the counter for $7 for a three month supply. They didn't have to get anything from the FDA. If enough people complain, they should remove the prohibition.

They aren't out to kill anyone, it's just that people have this amazing ability to convince other people that they are right, even when they aren't. It's even easier when they give gifts and such to make them more receptive.

No one said they are out to kill anyone. They are out to make a profit. But if they do murder anyone in the process, they don't care.

Though I do find this interesting (though it doesn't relate directly to the FDA, it does relate to government).

Population control for money is the easiest way to describe the new Codex which is run by the U.S. and controlled by Big Pharma and the like to reduce the population to a sustainable 500 million - a reduction of approximately 93 percent. The FAO and WHO have the audacity to estimate that by the introduction of just the vitamin and mineral guideline alone, at a minimum 3 billion deaths (1 billion from starvation and another 2 billion from preventable and degenerative diseases of under nutrition, e.g., cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes) will result.
    http://www.naturalnews.com/024128.html

Here is a possible explanation as to why this/these international governmental agency wants to do this.
