Birmingham AL: Avondale Brewing Company cancels Ted Nugent concert of "transphobic" comments.

Avondale Brewing Company posted a statement to social media Thursday afternoon saying it has made the decision to cancel a concert featuring Ted Nugent, just three days after the venue announced the event.

“We have heard the concerns of the Avondale community, which is so important to us, and in conjunction with our partners, have taken the necessary steps to cancel the Ted Nugent concert scheduled for July 18," the brewery posted across its social media accounts Thursday.

The brewery in conjunction with Red Mountain Entertainment announced the show Monday. Nugent, 74, announced Birmingham would feature in his 28-stop tour titled "Adios Mofo '23," which is being advertised as his farewell tour.

People flooded to the comments of Avondale's social media pages with a majority of the responses calling for the community to boycott the show due to Nugent's political history including recent comments made on social media.

"There is no such thing as transgender. You cannot change your gender. Comfortably numb is actually uncomfortably dumb. Debate me but bring your bib," he posted to Twitter last month.

Nugent has long supported the Republican Party and performed at a campaign rally for former president Donald Trump. Nugent previously denied the COVID-19 pandemic was real and made racially-motivated comments about the disease before speaking on how sick he got when he tested positive for COVID-19 in April of 2021.

We have reached out to Nugent's representation for a comment. Around the time of Avondale's social media post canceling the event, Nugent posted to Twitter again with a picture featuring more transphobic rhetoric.

Al's on 7th, a bar located in the Lakeview district of Birmingham, posted to Facebook earlier this week and cited that tweet as a reason to stop supporting Avondale Brewing Company or Good People Brewing Company, Avondale's parent company.

"Al's will no longer purchase any beer from Avondale Brewing Company nor Good People Brewing Company," the bar said in the social media post. "Avondale will be hosting a Ted Nugent concert in July. Nugent has recently made serious transphobic comments."

Other local bars have said they were planning to stop buying the company's beers if the show went on as scheduled.

Avondale and Red Mountain Entertainment websites no longer feature the show on their calendars. As of Thursday at 5 p.m., the show was still listed on the tour section of Ted Nugent's website.

Tickets for the Avondale show were set to go on sale Friday but it is unclear whether any tickets were purchased through presale or promotional events. Red Mountain Entertainment has not released a statement on the decision.

I don't know. Avondale had to know Ted's politics before bringing him on. The way I read the story, Avondale didn't care about Ted's "talk" but when their customers (local bars, etc) threatened to boycott, Avondale then canceled. "We have heard the concerns of the Avondale community" is not the same as "We don't like Ted's posts." Not sure there's a good answer here for Avondale. Lose profits from a one night big concert vs lose recurring purchases from the woke bars? If Avondale is smart, they should start looking to diversify their customer base so they can tell the woke bars to pound sand.

Oh you're exactly right. Which means they caved to the pressure. Which in a way is more of a problem then them just disagreeing with Ted on the issues.
